Morphometric measurements of sheep fed with increasing levels of sunflower meal 2
Silva, Neyton Carlos da; Gaspar, Raphael Colombo; Chaves, Amália Saturnino; Geraseev, Luciana Castro; Athayde, André Luiz Mendes; Crocomo, Letícia Ferrari.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance, body morphometric measurements and testicular development in lambs fed with different rates of sunflower meal inclusion. The animals (24) were randomly distributed in treatments with 0, 10, 20 and 30% of sunflower meal in the dry matter of the diet, in six replicates, during 56 days of confinement. The addition of the coproduct at increasing dietary rates increased linearly the dry matter intake in the percentage of live weight and neutral detergent fiber. Despite this, there was a linear reduction in ether extract intake and chest width. On the other hand, there was no difference in daily, total and final weight gains. The body condition score; height of withers, croup and thorax; length of body...

Effect of sex and fat depot location on fat composition of Rasa Aragonesa lambs 115
Horcada-Ibáñez,Alberto; Beriain-Apesteguía,María J.; Lizaso-Tirapu,Guadalupe; Insausti-Barrenetxea,Kizkitza; Purroy-Unanua,Antonio.
The quality of lamb fat is important in sheep carcass markets because it affects the degree of acceptance by consumers. In Spain, consumption of beef and lamb is important and young lambs are highly valued. In addition, the precocity of the female determines slaughter at younger ages than males, to avoid excessive fat. Therefore, the effect of sex and fat depot location (omental, mesenteric, kidney knob, subcutaneous, intermuscular and intramuscular) on the fatty acid composition in 30 Rasa Aragonesa lambs (15 males and 15 females) of 24 kg live weight and three months of age, were studied. Oleic, palmitic and stearic fatty acids were the main fatty acids making up the fat in all the fat depots from lambs. There were no significant differences (p>0.05)...

Effects of Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) and slaughter age on the shelf life of lamb meat 116
STAHLKE,Evelyn von Rosen; ROSSA,Luciane Silvia; SILVA,Giovana Maria; SOTOMAIOR,Cristina Santos; PEREIRA,Antônio Juglair; LUCIANO,Fernando Bittencourt; BORGES,Tâmara Duarte; MACEDO,Renata Ernlund Freitas de.
Abstract The shelf life extending effect of different modified atmospheres packages (MAP): vacuum (MAP-1), 69.6% N2 + 30% CO2 + 0.4% CO (MAP-2) and 70% O2 + 30% CO2 (MAP-3) on lamb meat at two slaughter ages (4 and 8-month-old) was assessed. pH decreased as slaughter age (SA) increased, and increased during longer storage time (ST), with no MAP effects. Lamb meat stored in MAP-1 and MAP-3 showed greater drip loss than that stored in MAP-2. Shear force was not influenced by SA and MAP treatments, but decreased during ST. Meat from 8-month-old lambs packaged in MAP-3 at longer ST resulted in lipid oxidation increase. MAP-2 enhanced color saturation and lamb meat redness, whereas MAP-3 showed lowest redness and chroma values, and highest aerobic...

Microbiological counting in lamb carcasses from an abattoir in São Paulo, Brazil 65
Martineli,Thaís Mioto; Rossi Junior,Oswaldo Durival; Cereser,Natacha Deboni; Cardozo,Marita Vedovelli; Fontoura,Cristianne Lino; Perri,Silvia Helena Venturoli.
The consumption of lamb meat in Brazil has increased in the last years but little information about the microbiological quality of this product is available. To evaluate the hygienic-sanitary conditions of lamb carcasses, the quantification of microorganism populations indicators (mesophiles and psychrotrophs; total and thermotolerant coliforms; Escherichia coli; moulds and yeasts) and the pathogenic microorganisms indentification (Salmonella sp. and Listeria spp.) were performed. A total of 60 lamb carcasses were sampled from one abattoir in São Paulo. Swab samples were collected from three points (forequarter, back and hindquarter) on the muscle surface after carcasses final washing. Statistical analysis consisted of descriptive evaluation of the results...

South Brazilian farmers’ perceptions concerning sheep tail docking 65
Stamm,Fabiana de Orte; Molento,Marcelo Beltrão; Molento,Carla Forte Maiolino.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to better understand farmers’ perceptions regarding sheep welfare and procedures concerning the tail docking of sheep in the state of Parana, Southern Brazil. The study was carried out via telephone interviews or personally with 146 sheep farmers. Twenty-eight farmers (19.2%) did not tail dock; the main reasons given were because they raised short-hair sheep breeds. One hundred and eighteen farmers docked their sheep tails (80.8%). The main reasons given were hygiene (61.0%), facilitated mating (42.4%), breed standards (29.7%), and esthetics (26.3%). Rubber ring was the main method used for tail docking. Although farmers in Parana recognized that sheep are sentient animals and that tail docking causes pain,...

Emphysematous abomasitis in a lamb by bacteria of the Sarcina genus in Southern Brazil 65
Leite Filho,Ronaldo Viana; Bianchi,Matheus Viezzer; Fredo,Gabriela; Oliveira,Eduardo Conceição de; Laisse,Cláudio João Mourão; Driemeier,David; Pavarini,Saulo Petinatti.
ABSTRACT: Abomasal bloat associated with Sarcina genus bacteria is a rare condition reported in young ruminants. An outbreak characterized by the sudden death of eight lambs from a total of 80 lambs (30 days-old) occurred on a property located in the city of Palmares do Sul in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Deaths began to occur after the introduction of supplementation into the diet of lambs. At necropsy, the abomasum was distended by gas and had diffusely thickened walls and emphysema. On microscopic examination, the abomasum showed marked diffuse emphysema and multifocal areas of mild superficial necrosis with many coccoid structures measuring approximately 2µm in diameter, arranged in tetrads, compatible with Sarcina genus bacteria. After removing...

Calidad de la carne y comportamiento productivo de corderos alimentados con granos secos de destilería en la dieta. 32
Curzaynz Leyva, Karym Roberto.

A hedonic model of lamb carcass attributes 31
Farrell, Terence C.; Hopkins, David L..
Lamb carcass value is widely reported to be a function of lean meat yield, which is the relationship between muscle, fat and bone. Five retailers and five wholesalers assessed 47 lamb carcasses from diverse genotypes and scored seven attributes. A hedonic model reveals that conformation attributes were more highly valued (16 c/kg) relative to yield characteristics (4 c/kg). Meat colour and fat distribution were significant for retailers, but less important for wholesalers. Genotype was not a strong indicator of conformation. Eye muscle area and depth were correlated with Fat C; however, these were not significant. These results indicate that carcass conformation, meat colour and fat distribution should be incorporated into carcass grading models.

Asymetric Price Transmission in the Spanish Lamb Sector 31
Ben Kaabia, Monia; Gil, Jose Maria.
This paper aims to investigate the non-linear adjustments of prices between farm and retail prices in the lamb sector in Spain. The methodology used is based on the multivariate approach to specify and estimate a three-regime Threshold Autoregressive Model. Results indicate that in the long-run price transmission is perfect and any supply or demand shocks are fully transmitted along the marketing chain. In the short-run, price adjustments between the farm and the retail levels are asymmetric and are representative of a demand-pull transmission mechanism. On the other hand, retailers benefit from any shock, whether positive or negative, that affects supply or demand conditions.

The Impact of Domestic and Import Prices on U.S. Lamb Imports: A Production System Approach 31
Muhammad, Andrew; Jones, Keithly G.; Hahn, William F..
As U.S. lamb imports increased relative to domestic production, and the relative share of chilled to frozen lamb imports increased, importers of chilled lamb have become less responsive to domestic and import prices, while the direct opposite is the case for frozen lamb imports. From 1990 to 2003, chilled lamb imports from Australia and New Zealand became less and less responsive to U.S. prices, and frozen imports became more responsive. Unconditional own-price elasticities also show that, over time, imports of chilled lamb became less responsive to import prices while frozen imports became more responsive to import prices.

ANÁLISE SOB A ÓTICA DA NEI/ECT DAS ESTRUTURAS DE GOVERNANÇA NA CADEIA PRODUTIVA DA OVINOCAPRINOCULTURA NO DISTRITO FEDERAL 31
Leitao, Fabricio Oliveira; Medeiros, Josemar Xavier De; Brisola, Marlon Vinicius; Silva, Ronaldo Dos Santos; Vieira, Debora De Faria Albernaz.

A niche marketing guide for lamb cooperatives 31
Kazmierczak, Tamra Kirkpatrick; Bell, James B..
The two types of niche markets targeted by lamb marketing cooperatives are described in this guide. The first type includes specialty middlemen outlets that cooperatives used to market lamb to specialized niches within the traditional meat marketing system of retail food stores, restaurants, food service outlets, and specialty distributors. The second type includes those outlets that cooperatives used to market lamb directly to the consumer, such as freezer markets, farmers' markets, mobile markets, and mail order sales. This guide also describes the advertising, promotional, and other marketing programs used by cooperatives to target these markets. Finally the competition, product differentiation, capital requirements, market development, management,...

Effects of Lamb Promotion on Lamb Demand and Imports 31
Capps, Oral, Jr.; Williams, Gary W.; Dang, Trang.
Three key questions regarding lamb promotion are addressed: (1) Have industry efforts to promote lamb shifted out the total demand for lamb? (2) Have any returns to producers achieved been greater than the cost of the promotion? (3) What has been the effect of lamb promotion on the lamb import share? The first question is addressed through an econometric analysis of the U.S. retail demand for lamb which takes into account the effects of lamb advertising and promotion expenditures. The results then are used to calculate a benefit-cost ratio for lamb promotion in answer to the second question. An econometric analysis of the import share of U.S. lamb consumption provides the basis for addressing the third question. Lamb promotion is found to have increased...

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN AS A BRAND: THE CASE OF NEW ZEALAND LAMB 31
Clemens, Roxanne; Babcock, Bruce A..
New Zealand has used country-of-origin labeling (COOL) as a "“country brand”" to differentiate New Zealand lamb in international markets and increase consumer awareness of this lamb as a high-quality imported product. The case of New Zealand lamb is especially interesting as an unsubsidized commodity product competing against subsidized lamb in some of the most competitive and sophisticated retail markets in the world. Given New Zealand’'s dependence on international markets, producers, processors, and exporters needed to develop strategies to create and maintain a strong positive image for their product. This paper explores the history of New Zealand lamb exports, the focus on quality and meeting consumer specifications, and differences in the use and...
