Impact of Alternative Land Management Options on Soil Fertility and Erosion in Uganda AgEcon

Using a data set collected in eight districts of Uganda, this study investigates how investment in soil fertility management (SFM) and conservation practices may affect natural resource outcomes, particularly the extent and level of soil erosion and soil nutrient loss. The study used ordered probit models and the results suggest that investment in SFM and conservation practices greatly improves soil fertility and reduces soil erosion. From a policy perspective, public investment to encourage use of SFM and conservation technologies would help the country achieve sustainable agricultural production.

The uncertain future of the Conservation Reserve Program has created substantial interest for agricultural producers, rural businesses, community leaders, sportsmen, and wildlife organizations. Many regions of the upper Great Plains have participated heavily in the CRP as evidenced by program acreage reaching land enrollment limits; however, current enrollment and re-enrollment criterion are expected to substantially reduce CRP acreage in many parts of the Great Plains. The divergence of interests between pursing post-CRP lands for agricultural production versus retaining the wildlife habitat and wildlife populations supported on CRP lands presents land owners and agricultural producers with important land management decisions over the next several years....

Land Management Practices and Their Effects on Food Crop Yields in Ghana AgEcon

Agricultural land use and the management of agricultural lands in Ghana as evidenced from farmer practices have been analysed using descriptive and regression analysis. The analysis shows that different land management practices affect crop yields differently in the different ecological zones. Also, the types of land management practices farmers use differ across the different ecological zones. The policy implication is that agricultural interventions should be developed on the basis of agro-ecological zones, and blanket crop improvement packages should be avoided. IMPACTS OF PROGRAMS AND ORGANIZATION ON THE ADOPTION OF SUSTAINABLE LAND MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGIES IN UGANDA AgEcon

The government of Uganda is currently decentralizing many of its services including those directly related to agriculture and the environment. Non-government organizations (NGOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) are being asked to take the lead in the provision of government services such as agricultural extension during the transition to demand driven fee-for-service. This paper explores the role of government programs, NGOs and CBOs in the adoption of land management technologies. We find that government programs were better distributed throughout Uganda and were more likely to operate in poorer areas than NGOs and CBOs. An Investigation into the Net Benefits of Revegetating Agricultural Land with Indigenous Species in the Dryland Section of the Goulburn-Broken Catchment Area AgEcon

Benefits ascribed to the revegetation of farming landscapes include enhancement of biodiversity, reduction in the advance of dryland salinity, sequestration of greenhouse gases, control of soil erosion, greater protection of agricultural activities from adverse weather conditions and an improved aesthetic value of rural lands. In this paper, economic analyses were performed to determine the net benefits to landholders of carrying out revegetation. Where the net benefits were insufficient to allow reasonable returns to be earned on the investment of marginal capital, an assessment was made of the amount and type of assistance that would be necessary to encourage landholders to adopt this improved system of land management.
