How to Approach a Market? A Theoretical Concept for Defining and Describing Land Markets AgEcon
Hurrelmann, Annette.
Land markets have received a considerable amount of attention in economic literature. Since the treatment of the topic covers various approaches, areas, and questions, it seems desirable to attempt an overview of the results. This paper devises a way in which to present a complete picture of the land market by drawing together the various contributions. The first step is to establish a method by which a market in its entirety can be defined. It is suggested that the application of Oliver Williamson's "Four levels of social analysis" is an appropriate approach to be used in this endeavour. In the second step, the contributions to land market research are reviewed, according to Williamson's scheme, within four broad categories: (1) embeddedness, (2)...

OS (DES) CAMINHOS DO PROCESSO DE REFORMA AGRÁRIA BRASILEIRO. AgEcon
Pereira, Jose Mauricio; Sousa, Marcio Miceli Maciel De.

Theory and Identification of Marginal Land and Factors Determining Land Use Change AgEcon
James, Laura.
Biomass is being researched as a possible alternative to fossil sources of energy, in order to avoid externalities from fossil fuel use that affect the environment and the economy. Some biomass-based energy production systems may produce unwanted externalities in their own right, such as increasing the production pressure on the agricultural land base, resulting in a rise in prices of food commodities. Using marginal land for biomass production has been suggested as a solution. However, the definition of what constitutes marginal land is poorly understood. This paper provides a theoretical foundation for identification of marginal lands, and analyzes recent literature to assess how current usage of the term marginal correspond to the theoretical...

Land reform in NE Brazil: a stochastic frontier production efficiency evaluation Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Magalhães,Marcelo Marques de; Souza Filho,Hildo Meirelles de; Sousa,Miguel Rocha de; Silveira,José Maria F. J. da; Buainain,Antônio Márcio.
The aim of this paper is to address the sources of technical and allocative inefficiency from a cross section sample of 308 beneficiaries of a market assisted land reform program, called "Cédula da Terra"; from five states in Northeastern region of Brazil. In spite of some differences on governance of the "Cédula da Terra"; in comparison with traditional expropriation land reform program, studies carried by Buainain et al. (2002) have shown small differences between then, regarding their social and economic characteristics. We believe that our results could be useful to identify the main problems of Brazilian land reform settlements. We estimated a potential production frontier following the methodology of Battese and Coelli (1995), Coelli et al. (1998)...
