Aspects of biology of Megalobulimus paranaguensis (Gastropoda, Acavoidea) in the coastal plain of the Brazilian southeast Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Fontenelle,José H.; Miranda,Marcel S..
ABSTRACT We studied the reproductive biology of Megalobulimus paranaguensis (Pilsbry & Ihering, 1900), a large and long-lived land gastropod from the Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil. The study was conducted at an urban park in the city of Santos, state of São Paulo. For 4 years, we counted the egg postures and annual eclosion rate of 32 captive snails and looked for associations between egg posture and the climatical variables of the period. The annual mean posture of 8.7 eggs per snail obtained in our results is a small number, but typical of Brazilian macromollusks. The annual eclosion rate was 31%. The beginning of the annual activity period of snails occurred in the middle of March, and lasted 33.97±3.02 weeks. The dormancy period started in the...

Population dynamics of Megalobulimus paranaguensis (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) in the southeast coast of Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Miranda,Marcel S.; Fontenelle,José H..
ABSTRACT. The population dynamics of Megalobulimus paranaguensis (Pilsbry & Ihering, 1900), a large and long-lived land gastropod from Brazil's Southeast (Atlantic Forest) was studied between 2006 and 2009, at an urban park in the city of Santos, state of São Paulo. The study included biometry, weighing, and marking and recapture of adult individuals. The variables obtained from specimens were correlated with the environmental variables of the study period. The survival rate of the adult snail population was 96.7%. Recruitment showed several peaks during the year, and was concentrated between April and August, except in 2009, when there was only one peak in August. Specimen abundance progressively increased from 2006 on, with a trend towards relative...

The influence of diet and isolation on growth and survival in the land snail Bulimulus tenuissimus (Mollusca: Bulimulidae) in laboratory Zoologia
Meireles,Liliane M. O.; Silva,Lidiane C.; Junqueira,Flávia O.; Bessa,Elisabeth C. A..
Feed influences directly growth and survival in land snails. Here, we investigate the influence of diet and isolation on growth and survival in Bulimulus tenuissimus (d'Orbigny, 1835) in the laboratory. Animals were maintained individually and in groups and three different types of diets: lettuce, ration and both lettuce and ration (mixed diet) for 210 days. Isolated animals, in all diet types, grew more rapidly than grouped animals. Also, snails fed with lettuce grew most slowly in isolated or grouped treatments. Within isolated or grouped treatments, growth rates were similar for the ration and the mixed diet. Mortality rate was higher in animals fed on lettuce only, in both density treatments. Thus, diet and density are important components of the...

Development and reproduction in Bulimulus tenuissimus (Mollusca: Bulimulidae) in laboratory Zoologia
Silva,Lidiane C.; Meireles,Liliane M. O.; Junqueira,Flávia O.; Bessa,Elisabeth C. A..
Bulimulus tenuissimus (d'Orbigny, 1835) is a land snail of parasitological importance with a poorly understood biology. The goal of this laboratory study was to determine development and reproductive patterns in B. tenuissimus. Recently hatched individuals in seven groups of 10 were maintained in the laboratory for two years. To test for self-fertilization, 73 additional individuals were isolated. After 180 days the isolated snails showed no signs of reproduction. Subsequently, 30 of these snails were paired to test fertility. We noted the date and time of egg-laying, the number of eggs produced, the number of egg-layings per individual, the incubation period and hatch success. This species shows indeterminate growth. Individuals that were maintained with...

Influence of substrate humidity on desiccation resistance capacity in Subulina octona (Mollusca, Subulinidae) BABT
Dias,Roberto Júnio Pedroso; Bessa,Elisabeth Cristina de Almeida; D'Ávila,Sthefane.
The aim of this study was to verify the influence of substrate humidity on desiccation resistance of Subulina octona, continuously exposed, for 48 h, to the temperature of 35 °C. Forty individuals conditioned in 2 plastic boxes, one box containing black earth humidified with 40 ml water and the other one containing dry black earth were used. The retraction of cephalopodal mass inside the shell and the number of dead individuals was evaluated. Snails from dry and humid substrate boxes showed cephalopodal mass retraction of 9.9 cm±2.88 and 2.78 cm±3.17, respectively, after 12 h of exposure; 8.55 cm±1.3 and 6.33 cm±2.91, after 24 h; 11.07 cm±4.19 and 7.27 cm±2.7, after 36 h, 9.12 cm±2.15 and 6.47 cm±2.11, after 48 h. Every individual of dry substrate box died...

Phytochemical and molluscicidal activity of Mikania glomerata Sprengel (Asteraceae) in different lifestages of Subulina octona (Mollusca, Subulinidade) BABT
Souza,Bruna Aparecida de; Silva,Lidiane Cristina da; Chicarino,Evelyn Durço; Bessa,Elisabeth Cristina de Almeida.
The objective of this work was to study the molluscicidal activity of aqueous extract of Mikania glomerata on the land snail Subulina octona and to assess the changes caused on the snail's fecundity, growth, hatchability and the offspring produced after exposure. Eggs, newly hatched and 30 day old snails were exposed to the sublethal concentration of M. glomerata extract for 24 and 48 h and the observations were made for 120 days. The presence of tannins, flavonoids and saponins were shown by phytochemical tests. The extract reduced significantly the hatchability and the survival of the offspring hatched from the exposed eggs. The eggs exposed for 48 h presented lower hatchability rates. There was a reduction on survival and growth of newly hatched and...
