| For many marine fish species, recruitment is strongly related to larval survival and dispersal to nursery areas. Simulating larval drift should help assessing the sensitivity of recruitment variability to early life history. An individual-based model (IBM) coupled to a hydrodynamic model was used to simulate common sole larval supply from spawning areas to coastal and estuarine nursery grounds at the population scale in the eastern Channel on a 14-yr time series, from 1991 to 2004. | We considered Cushing's match/mismatch theory in a heterotrophic environment and hypothesized that settlement and recruitment success in blue mussel are higher when the food supply is rich in polyunsaturated and essential fatty acids (PUFA/EFA). To test this hypothesis, we monitored larval development as well as fatty acid composition in trophic resources during two successive reproductive seasons. The decoupling we found between the presence of competent larvae in the water column and settlement rates strongly suggests that metamorphosis is delayed until conditions are suitable. | To understand the role of pre-recruitment processes (supply of larvae and recruitment) in the maintenance of an intertidal barnacle (Chthamalus challengeri Hoek) patch, the availability of cyprid larvae and the recruitment on natural pebble substrata was monitored on the Magarisaki pebble shore (Amakusa, Kyushu, Japan) during 1995 and 1996. Also, a hypothesis that predation and/or bulldozing by mobile intertidal mollusks during the post-recruitment period could be an important factor in mortality of these barnacles was tested.
