Polyphasic growth in fish: a case study with Corydoras paleatus (Siluriformes, Callichthyidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Barradas,José R. S.; Lermen,Isabel S.; Larré,Gabriel G.; Martins,Thaís P.; Fontoura,Nelson F..
ABSTRACT A weight-length relationship was established for Corydoras paleatus (Jenyns, 1842) (Siluriformes, Callichthyidae) (n=596) from samples taken in November-December 2009 and March-April 2010, in Pinguela Lagoon (29°46'57"S; 50°11'16"W), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The species showed a polyphasic allometric growth pattern, each stanza described by an independent power equation controlled by a switch function: W = a1Lb1 ∙ (1 + eRsc ∙ (L-SCP))-1 + a2Lb2 ∙ [1 - (1 + eRsc ∙ (L-SCP))-1] ; where W is the expected weight for a specific length L, a1 and a2 are the proportionality coefficients for stanzas 1 and 2, b1 and b2 are the allometric coefficients for stanzas 1 and 2, Rsc is the stanza changing rate for the switch function and SCP is the stanza changing...

Using body length measurements to study larval growth: a lepidopteran example Neotropical Entomology
COSTA,FELIPE A.P.L.; GOMES-FILHO,ARLINDO.
This work utilizes data for caterpillars of the Neotropical butterfly Hypothyris ninonia daeta (Bdv.) (Nymphalidae: Ithomiinae) to demonstrate that body length measurements can be used as an accurate index of weight in larval growth studies. It also determines analytically the time interval that must be maintained between consecutive measurements in order to keep within acceptable levels the chances of overlap in estimates (i.e., the chances that caterpillars of different lengths have the same weight). These results show that studying the growth of immature insects is not necessarily an exclusive laboratory enterprise. This approach may be particularly useful to estimate immature growth rate in the field, when more accurate measures are not possible or...

Population structure and reproductive biology of Cichla kelberi (Perciformes, Cichlidae) in Lobo Reservoir, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Souza,Jussara E. de; Fragoso-Moura,Evelise N.; Fenerich-Verani,Nelsy; Rocha,Odete; Verani,José R..
The structure of Cichla kelberi population was characterized regarding the sex ratio, total length composition and some reproductive characteristics. The specimens were collected in two periods, from November 2002 to November 2003 and from December 2004 to May 2006. The sex ratio was significantly different than 1:1. The total length varied from 3.4 to 40.1 cm, with individuals in the shortest length classes occurring throughout the year, but with greater incidence in the warmer periods. Females and males reached similar lengths and there was no difference between the sexes regarding the length-weight relationship. The estimated values of condition factor were near the central value of 1.0 and decreased during the cooler months, coinciding with periods of...

An osteometric approach to reconstruct the length and weight of Lutjanus argentiventris (Perciformes: Lujtanidae) for archaeological and ecological purposes Neotropical Ichthyology
Martínez-Polanco,María Fernanda; Béarez,Philippe.
ABSTRACT Lutjanus argentiventris presents a large intertropical distribution within the Eastern Pacific, which is as important to fisheries now as it was in the pre-Hispanic period. The purpose of this article is to present an allometric model that enables the size and weight of L. argentiventris to be predicted, using the isolated bones found in archaeological and paleontological contexts or the stomach contents of ichthyophagous species. A modern collection of L. argentiventris from Ecuador was used, composed of 37 individuals covering a wide range of sizes and weights. The total length (TL), standard length (SL), and total fresh weight (W) of each individual was gathered. The TL of the sample ranged between 210 and 760 mm, the SL between 164 and 627 mm...

Relação peso-comprimento da corvina Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest) (Pisces, Sciaenidae) na Baía de Sepetiba, Rio de Janeiro Zoologia
Araújo,Francisco Gerson; Vicentini,Rafaela Nascimento.
The length-weight relationship of populations of white croaker Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest, 1823) in the Sepetiba Bay (22º54'-23º04'S; 43º34'-44º10'W), were assessed. It aims to contribute to the knowledge of the biometrics and to estimate the biomass of this very abundant fishery resource in the Bay. Fishes sampled, in both trawling beach seine, sampling programme, from October 1998 to May 1999 were analyzed. The equation found was W = 0.00000942 L2.99 fom the natural logaritmized transformation of the raw data, through ordinary least square equation = In W = -11.57 + 2.996 In L (r=0.99). The condition factor was relatively high compared with coastal population from Southeast Brazil, probably due to in this study both males and females from juvenile...

Indicadores reprodutivos de Parauchenipterus striatulus (Steindachner) (Pisces, Auchenipteridae) na Represa de Ribeirão das Lajes, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Araújo,Francisco Gerson; Duarte,Silvana; Goldberg,Rubens Sterental; Fichberg,Liana.
Parauchenipterus striatulus is a representative of the freshwater catfish with wide distribution in the South America region. Despite of being a very abundant fish in rivers and reservoirs of this region, little is known about its biology and ecology. In Ribeirão das Lajes reservoir (22º42'S - 22º50'S, 43º53'- 44º05' W, Rio de Janeiro), the Rio de Janeiro state's largest hydroelectric reservoir, this species is very abundant, representing about 40% of the total experimental fish catches using gill nets. This paper aims to assess aspects of the reproductive cycle of this species describing the gonadal stages, gonadosomatic index, weight-length relationship and condition factor. Fish sampling were carried out bi-monthly, between April 1996 and May 1997. Gill...

Population structure and allometry of Podocnemis unifilis (Testudines, Podocnemididae) in a protected area upstream Belo Monte dam in Xingu River, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
MIORANDO,PRISCILA S.; GIARRIZZO,TOMMASO; PEZZUTI,JUAREZ C.B..
ABSTRACT Amazon river turtles are increasingly threatened by habitat loss and alteration due to the Brazilian energy policy based on construction of hydroelectric dams, meanwhile, populational studies remain scarce. We described the population structure, and established body allometric relationships of Podocnemis unifilis in the Terra do Meio Ecological Station in the Iriri River, tributary of the Xingu River upstream the Belo Monte dam under construction Turtles were captured by hand net and diving in 2012 and 2013 dry seasons, and 2013 rainy season. A total of 728 males, 296 females and four juveniles were captured. Adult sex ratio was male-biased by 9.15♂:1♀. Females were significantly larger than males. Mean straight carapace length was 268.9...

Influence of environmental quality of the tributaries of the Monjolinho River on the relative condition factor (Kn) of the local ichthyofauna Biota Neotropica
Barrilli,Germano Henrique Costa; Rocha,Odete; Negreiros,Natalia Felix; Verani,José Roberto.
The relative condition factors (Kn) of the fishes Astyanax paranae, Phalloceros harpagos and Poecilia reticulata were used as a means of assessing the influence of environmental conditions on the well-being of sub - populations of these species, with the eventual aim of using them as bioindicators of disturbance in tributary streams of the Monjolinho River, in São Carlos - SP. The power-law curve generated by the length-weight relationship indicated a positive allometric growth for the three species studied. Overall, the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) positively correlated average Kn of A. paranae with well oxygenated and oligotrophic environments, typical of conserved areas or near the natural state. For the average value of Kn obtained for...

Population aspects of Bryconamericus stramineus in streams of the upper Paraná River basin, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Vasconcelos,Lilian Paula; Súarez,Yzel Rondon; Lima-Junior,Sidnei Eduardo.
In order to describe some aspects of the population ecology of Bryconamericus stramineus in the Guiraí River basin, upper Paraná River basin, samples were taken bimonthly from October 2006 to August 2007 at seven sites in the basin. A total of 960 individuals, including 532 females, 316 males, and 112 of undetermined sex, were collected. A significant variation in the sex ratio was observed (Χ2 = 32.82; p < 0.001). Females were larger (59.7 mm) than males (58.9 mm); however, males showed a larger angular growth coefficient (b) than females. It was estimated that 50% of females were sexually mature at 36.4 mm. The highest rate of ovary development was observed in October, while in June 2007 no mature females were found. Mean fecundity was estimated at...
