Spatial variation in the stable isotopes of 13C and 15N and trophic position of Leporinus friderici (Characiformes, Anostomidae) in Corumbá Reservoir, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pereira,Alexandre L.; Benedito,Evanilde; Sakuragui,Cássia M..
Stable isotopes of carbon (delta13C) and nitrogen (delta15N) were used to describe sources of energy and trophic position for adult Leporinus friderici in the area of the Corumbá Reservoir, Brazil. Samples were collected from April 1999 to March 2000. Spatial variations were not identified in the isotopic composition. The maximum and minimum contribution of C4 plants calculated integrating the variation of plants and fish were 47.7% and 2.4%, respectively. Among C3 plants, periphyton presented closer isotopic values to those observed for fishes, corresponding to an important carbon source. The proportion of ingested plant item is larger in rivers upstream from the reservoir (42.7%), which justifies the smaller trophic level among there. However, in the...

Parasite infracommunities of Leporinus friderici: A comparison of three tributaries of the Jurumirim Reservoir in southeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
YAMADA,FÁBIO H.; BONGIOVANI,MARCELA F.; YAMADA,PRISCILLA O.F.; SILVA,REINALDO J. DA.
ABSTRACT The degradation and homogenization of natural habitats is considered a major cause of biotic homogenization. Many studies have been undertaken on the effects of dams on aquatic wildlife, in particular fish assemblages. But how do dams affect the parasitic fauna of such fish? The aim of the present study was to examine parasitic similarity, comparing the diversity and structure of parasite communities of Leporinus friderici (Characiformes, Anostomidae) in three upstream tributaries under the influence of the Jurumirim Dam on the Upper Paranapanema River in southeastern Brazil. The present study did not find any significant differences in parasite communities among populations of L. friderici in the three upstream tributaries. This result highlights...

The reproductive strategy of Leporinus friderici (Characiformes, Anostomidae) in the Paraná River basin: the effect of reservoirs BJB
LOPES,C. de A.; BENEDITO-CECILIO,E.; AGOSTINHO,A. A..
The reproductive strategy of a species depends upon the interaction between intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Examining the population of Leporinus friderici in two reservoirs of the Upper Paraná River basin in reference to first gonadal maturation and breeding season and sites, the present investigation tested whether the environment formed by damming promoted spatial and temporal changes in the reproductive strategy of this species. Analyses of sex ratios showed that females significantly predominated in Itaipu, while in Corumbá the sexes were about equal with a slight predominance of males. Size-associated sexual dimorphism was observed, that is females dominated the longer length categories, and males the shorter. The minimum size at which L. friderici...

Enzymatic polymorphism study as help for constitution of initial broodstock for a new cultivated finfish species. ArchiMer
Renno, J; Luquet, P.
Leporinus friderici is a South American promising species for fish culture. In French Guiana the "morphological species", L. friderici, L. granti, L. lebaili and L. affinis steyermarki are found. Their identification is sometimes difficult on usual criterion. To constitute an initial broodstock of L. friderici from local wild populations, the genetic structure of these species was studied. Fifteen enzyme systems, representing twenty loci, were screened.
