Testosterone level, nasal gland volume and Leydig cell morphometry in capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Costa,D.S.; Paula,T.A.R..
The testosterone levels with nasal gland volume and Leydig cell morphometry in sexually mature capybaras were compared using 10 adult capybaras, aging 28 months. Body and testicular weight were 50kg and 28g, respectively. The gonadosomatic index was 0.11±0.02%, while nasal gland volume was 34.12±13.04ml. Serum testosterone concentration was 25.07±14.73ng/ml. Leydig cell volume density and leydigosomatic index were, respectively, 28.8±8.3% and 0.030±0.007%. Total and individual Leydig cell volumes were 6.88±1.92ml and 2,228.14±272.59x10-12ml, respectively. Leydig cell numbers per testis and per gram of testis were, respectively, 3,079.4±719.9x10(6) and 115.09±31.78x10(6) cells. These results show that increase in serum testosterone concentration is...

Expression of caveolin-1 in rat Leydig cells Biocell
Casanova,Marta B..
Caveolin-1, the first member of caveolin family reported, is recognized as the structural component of caveola, a plasma membrane invagination or vesicles that are a subcompartment distinct from clathrin-coated pits. This protein is also known to be involved in cholesterol trafficking. The aim of this study was to determine the expression of caveolin-1 in adult rat Leydig cells. Testis sections incubated with an antibody to caveolin-1 showed, by immunohistochemistry, a moderate number of Leydig cells with different degrees of immunoreaction and a strong reaction in endothelial cells and in the lamina propia of seminiferous tubules. Caveolin-1 was detected in the cell cytoplasm with a granular pattern and on the cell surface of Leydig cells cultured 24 h on...

Sperm Quality and Testicular Histomorphometry of Wistar Rats Supplemented with Extract and Fractions of Fruit of Tribulus terrestris L. BABT
Oliveira,Nelma Neylanne Pinho Muniz; Félix,Matheus Augusto Rodrigues; Pereira,Tauany Costa Silva; Rocha,Luiz Gustavo Pessoa; Miranda,José Rafael; Zangeronimo,Márcio Gilberto; Pinto,José Eduardo Brasil Pereira; Bertolucci,Suzan Kelly Vilela; Sousa,Raimundo Vicente de.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to assess the sperm quality and testicular histomorphometry of Wistar rats supplemented with extract and fractions of fruits of Tribulus terrestris L. The ethanolic extract was obtained by dynamic maceration of spray-dried fruit. This extract was fractionated by liquid-liquid partition, using increasing polarity solvents. Twenty male rats were separated in four groups, with five rats in each group. The control was supplemented with distilled water, while the others were daily given the ethanolic extract, hexanic or aqueous fraction soluble in methanol in a dose of 42 mg.kg-1.day-1 for 70 days. Sperm was obtained from the right epididymal tail for the analysis of motility, count, morphology and viability. The testicular...

Nitric oxide modulates ATP-evoked currents in mouse Leydig cells BJMBR
de Deus,J.L.; Dagostin,A.L.A.; Varanda,W.A..
Testosterone synthesis within Leydig cells is a calcium-dependent process. Intracellular calcium levels are regulated by different processes including ATP-activated P2X purinergic receptors, T-type Ca2+ channels modulated by the luteinizing hormone, and intracellular calcium storages recruited by a calcium-induced calcium release mechanism. On the other hand, nitric oxide (NO) is reported to have an inhibitory role in testosterone production. Based on these observations, we investigated the interaction between the purinergic and nitrergic systems in Leydig cells of adult mice. For this purpose, we recorded ATP-evoked currents in isolated Leydig cells using the whole cell patch clamp technique after treatment with L-NAME (300 μM and 1 mM), L-arginine (10,...
