Compared nymphal development of Tingis americana (Hemiptera, Tingidae) in two Handroanthus species (Bignoniaceae) and reproductive parameters in seedlings of Handroanthus heptaphyllus Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Moreira,Daiane C.; Redaelli,Luiza R.; Guidoti,Marcus; Barcellos,Aline.
Nymphs and adults of Tingis americana Drake, 1922 were found feeding on leaves of Handroanthus heptaphyllus (Vell.) Mattos and Handroanthus chrysotrichus (Mart. ex A. DC.) Mattos in the Botanic Garden, Porto Alegre, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This is the first record of T. americana on these host plants and in the southern Brazil. We aimed to compare the nymphal development on both hosts and to analyze the reproductive parameters on H. heptaphyllus (25 ± 1ºC; 60 ± 10% RH; 16 h photophase). The mean nymphal period (days) was shorter in individuals reared on H. heptaphyllus (12.69 ± 0.076) than on H. chrysotrichus (19.11 ± 0.208) (P < 0.0001), however, nymph viability was similar. On H. heptaphyllus, the mean embryonic period lasted 12.32 ± 0.274...

Life history, biomass and production of Coronatella rectangula (Branchiopoda, Anomopoda, Chydoridae) from Minas Gerais Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Viti,Thais; Wisniewski,Célio; Orlando,Tereza Cristina; Santos-Wisniewski,Maria José dos.
Species of Chydoridae provide the main diversity of the Cladocera. These organisms have been the subject of many studies; some dealing with their role in energy flow in aquatic ecosystems, since they inhabit the littoral region of water bodies which undergo the first impacts from anthropic activities. The aim of this study is to increase knowledge about the life cycle of Coronatella rectangula (Sars, 1861), a species found in several water bodies in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The life cycle was determined by the culture of parthenogenetic females under controlled conditions in the laboratory. Experimental cultures were maintained in growth chambers at a constant temperature of 23.6(±0.5)ºC, through a 12 h light/12 h dark photoperiod. The organisms...

Dispersion larvaire et cycle de vie dans les environnements hydrothermaux profonds : le cas de Rimicaris exoculata et d'espèces proches ArchiMer
Hernandez Avila, Ivan.
Deep-water hydrothermal vent host high-biomass communities based on chemoautotrophy supported by the metabolic activity of free-living and symbiotic bacteria associated to invertebrates, especially megafauna. Knowledge on the mechanisms of dispersal and the life cycle of vent species is essential to our understanding of the vent communities in terms of distribution, structure and temporal variation. In this study, I present some advances regarding the dispersal and life cycle of a dominant species of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) vent ecosystems, the alvinocaridid shrimp Rimicaris exoculata, and other related species. The methodological approaches applied include morphological descriptions of larvae, analysis of population biology and reproduction, and...

The formation of the twin resting cysts in the dinoflagellate Dissodinium pseudolunula, a parasite of copepod eggs ArchiMer
Gomez, Fernando; Artigas, Luis Felipe.
The dinoflagellate Dissodinium pseudolunula is the most common and widespread ecto-parasite of copepod eggs in neritic waters. When the host is absent, the species survives with a distinctive pair of twin resting cysts described as Pyrocystis margalefii. Based on live samples, the formation of the twin resting cysts is illustrated here for the first time. The gymnodinioid infective cells did not form overwintering cysts under unfavourable conditions. These are formed inside the secondary lunate sporangium.

Modélisation bioénergétique de la croissance, du développement et de la reproduction d'un petit pélagique : l'anchois du golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Pecquerie, Laure.
Understanding the recruitment variability of fish populations is a major challenge in fishery sciences. In the present work, we explore a new approach to study the potential factors that determine this recruitment in the context of biophysical modelling. The adult spawning pattern might influence the survival of the larvae as it determines the environmental conditions they experience during this critical period. We apply our study to the Bay of Biscay anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus, which is a multiple-batch spawner. The objective of the study is to understand the effect of the environmental conditions experienced by an individual i) on the energy available for reproduction and ii) on the temporal distribution of the spawning events and its consequences...

Contribution des frayères côtières au recrutement du stock de seiche Sepia officinalis de Manche : lien entre le succès de la phase pré-recrutée et l'abondance de la ressource ArchiMer
Gras, Michael.
The English Channel cuttlefish Sepia officinalis is the most important cephalopod stock in the N-E Atlantic but is only managed by local measures, mainly due to a lack of suitable tools. The objective of this work is therefore to improve the knowledge of its population dynamic, particularly the parameters inuencing the resource abundance. After a summary of the state of the art, in a first step, the exploration of the stock structure during the reproduction period revealed that, in a warming and high fishing pressure context, the life history traits of cuttlefish have changed and a percentage of one year old cuttlefish are mature. In a second step, the inuence of the fuel price on the spatial allocation of the French trawling effort was highlighted and...

The release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into the environment has increased very substantially over the last decades leading to high concentrations in sediments of contaminated areas. To evaluate the consequences of long-term chronic exposure to PAHs, zebrafish were exposed, from their first meal at 5 days post fertilisation until they became reproducing adults, to diets spiked with three PAH fractions at three environmentally relevant concentrations with the medium concentration being in the range of 4.6–6.7 μg g−1 for total quantified PAHs including the 16 US-EPA indicator PAHs and alkylated derivatives. The fractions used were representative of PAHs of pyrolytic (PY) origin or of two different oils of differing compositions, a heavy fuel...

Differential influence of life cycle on growth and toxin production of three Pseudo-nitzschia species (Bacillariophyceae) ArchiMer
Sauvey, Aurore; Claquin, Pascal; Le Roy, Bertrand; Le Gac, Mickael; Fauchot, Juliette.
We used a multi‐strain approach to study the intra‐ and interspecific variability of the growth rates of three Pseudo‐nitzschia species – P. australis, P. fraudulenta, and P. pungens – and of their domoic acid (DA) production. We carried out mating and batch experiments to investigate the respective effects of strain age and cell size, and thus the influence of their life cycle on the physiology of these species. The cell size ‐ life cycle relationship was characteristic of each species. The influence of age and cell size on the intraspecific variability of growth rates suggests that these characteristics should be considered cautiously for the strains used in physiological studies on Pseudo‐nitzschia species. The results from all three species do not...

Black scabbardfish, Aphanopus carbo, in the northeast Atlantic: distribution and hypothetical migratory cycle ArchiMer
Farias, Ines; Morales-nin, Beatriz; Lorance, Pascal; Figueiredo, Ivone.
The biology, ecology, and dynamics of the deep-sea teleost black scabbardfish in the northeast Atlantic are reviewed. The black scabbardfish is a commercial bathypelagic species found in the NE Atlantic mostly from Iceland to the Canary Islands and Western Sahara, at depths from 800 to 1300 m. The spatial structure of its population is still uncertain, although the existence of one single stock that migrates around the NE Atlantic driven by feeding and reproduction is the most likely hypothesis consistent with available data. This review is based on data from commercial fisheries off the Faroe Islands, Hatton Bank, the west of the British Isles, and Portugal (mainland, Azores, and Madeira) and from Icelandic and Scottish scientific surveys collected...

Une approche bioénergétique pour la comparaison des traits d'histoire de vie de l'anchois et de la sardine du golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Gatti, Paul.
Anchovy and sardine belong to the guild of small pelagic fish and are of peculiar importance at the scales of ecosystems and fisheries. Both species are worldwide spread and commonly occur in the same ecosystems. They display large interannual variability in biomass with markedly different trends or even asynchronous. A growing literature suggests that those dynamics are due to respective sensibility to environmental conditions driven by different biological traits. A priori both species are very similar but show slightly distinct feeding behaviours and reproductive strategies. Understanding divergences in both species biology and life history strategies is thus crucial to understand and predict past and future dynamics of these stocks. The aim of this PHD...

A hierarchical Bayesian model for embedding larval drift and habitat models in integrated life cycles for exploited fish ArchiMer
Rochette, Sebastien; Le Pape, Olivier; Vigneau, Joel; Rivot, Etienne.
This paper proposes a hierarchical Bayesian framework for modeling the life cycle of marine exploited fish with a spatial perspective. The application was developed for a nursery-dependent fish species, the common sole (Solea solea), on the Eastern Channel population (Western Europe). The approach combined processes of different natures and various sources of observations within an integrated framework for life-cycle modeling: (1) outputs of an individual-based model for larval drift and survival that provided yearly estimates of the dispersion and mortality of eggs and larvae, from spawning grounds to settlement in several coastal nurseries; (2) a habitat suitability model, based on juvenile trawl surveys coupled with a geographic information system, to...

Spatial distribution and interannual variations in the size frequency distribution and abundances of Pleuragramma antarcticum larvae in the Dumont d’Urville Sea from 2004 to 2010 ArchiMer
Koubbi, Philippe; O'Brien, Colleen; Loots, Christophe; Giraldo, Carolina; Smith, Martina; Tavernier, Eric; Vacchi, Marino; Vallet, Carole; Chevallier, Jean; Moteki, Masato.
This paper investigates the abundance and distribution of Pleuragramma antarcticum larvae by size class in the Dumont d’Urville Sea from 2004 to 2010. Samples were collected between Dumont d’Urville station and the Mertz Glacier Tongue onboard the RV l’Astrolabe for studying the inter-annual and spatial distribution of fish larvae and the TRV Umitaka Maru for looking at life stages vertical distributions. The seabed depression adjacent to the Mertz Glacier Tongue and in Commonwealth Bay hosted high abundances of small P. antarcticum larvae, while larger larvae were found in lower abundance and further offshore. We found that canyons, sea ice, stability of the water column and temperatures are important features for determining suitable areas for young...

Proteolytic enzymes of hepatopancreas of six species of peneids (Penaeus kerathurus, P. japonicus, P. monodon, P. stylirostris, P. merguiensis and P. vannamei ) have been studied. Some of their physiological variations have been characterised. Increase in acclimation temperature of crustaceans enhances increase of specific activities of proteases. Variations of salinity does not modify specific activities, nor quantities of trypsin, nor electrophoretic patterns of these different proteases.

Comparison of three Gobiidae (Teleostei) life history strategies over their geographical range ArchiMer
Bouchereau, Jl; Guelorget, O.
This article summarizes the latest knowledge on the ecology of three gobies. The authors compile data published by various scientists who carried out their research under different conditions, using a variety of methods for collecting data and processing the results. The relationship between population structure and different environmental conditions was considered for three goby species Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas, 1770), P. microps (Kroyer, 1838) and Gobius niger Linnaeus, 1758, in different geographical areas, notably the Mediterranean (Gulf of Lions and Adriatic) and cold temperate Atlantic (north of the English Channel) parts. In the three species, the life cycles in the Mediterranean, favoured by the local hydroclimate, are "contracted" (growth is...

Cymothoa frontalis, a cymothoid isopod parasitizing the belonid fish Strongylura strongylura from the Malabar Coast (Kerala, India): redescription, description, prevalence and life cycle ArchiMer
Thamban, Aneesh Panakkool; Kappalli, Sudha; Kottarathil, Helna Ameri; Gopinathan, Anilkumar; Paul, Trilles Jean.
Background: Cymothoa frontalis Milne Edward, 1840 is a very poorly described cymothoid, notwithstanding the previous redescription of the female. Pertinently, to date, the host of C. frontalis has not been identified with adequate precision. Most of the descriptions of cymothoids carried out hitherto were based primarily on females, but practically ignoring other life cycle stages. The present paper redescribes the female and describes other life cycle stages of the species C. frontalis to get better precision in their identification. Results: The female phase of C. frontalis is redescribed according to type specimens extant in the NMNH, Paris, and also by the data obtained from live specimens collected during the present study. The general morphology and...

The Combined Effect of Haplodiplonty and Partial Clonality on Genotypic and Genetic Diversity in a Finite Mutating Population ArchiMer
Stoeckel, Solenn; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Krueger-hadfield, Stacy A; Orive, Maria.
Partial clonality is known to affect the genetic composition and evolutionary trajectory of diplontic (single, free-living diploid stage) populations. However, many partially clonal eukaryotes exhibit life cycles in which somatic development occurs in both haploid and diploid individuals (haplodiplontic life cycles). Here, we studied how haplodiplontic life cycles and partial clonality structurally constrain, as immutable parameters, the reshuffling of genetic diversity and its dynamics in populations over generations. We assessed the distribution of common population genetic indices at different proportions of haploids, rates of clonality, mutation rates, and sampling efforts. Our results showed that haplodiplontic life cycles alone in finite populations...
