Chemical treatment of banana tree pseudostem particles aiming the production of particleboards Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Guimarães,Bárbara Maria Ribeiro; Mendes,Lourival Marin; Tonoli,Gustavo Henrique Denzin; Bufalino,Lina; Mendes,Rafael Farinassi; Guimarães Junior,José Benedito.
Brazil is one of the major banana producers in the world, and consequently generates a great amount of residues from this crop, which could be utilized in particleboard production. The present work aimed to evaluate the effect of different chemical treatments of the particles of Musa sp. pseudostem, on their chemical and physical properties (basic density), and on the physical and mechanical properties of the particleboards produced with the same material. Five treatments were applied to the particles: 1) without treatment (control); 2) 2% acetic acid; 3) 0.5% NaOH; 4) acetone (1/1 in volume/volume); and 5) water. Panels with medium density were produced (0.70 g/cm³), bonded with 12% (in relation to the particle mass) of urea-formaldehyde adhesive. The...

Characterization of biomasses from the north and northeast regions of Brazil for processes in biorefineries Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
RAMBO,Magale Karine Diel; ALEXANDRE,Gerso Pereira; RAMBO,Michele Cristiane Diel; ALVES,Aparecido Roberto; GARCIA,Wokimar T.; BARUQUE,Edmond.
Abstract In search for renewable energy sources, the Brazilian residual biomasses stand out due to their favorable physical and chemical properties, low cost, and their being less pollutant. Therefore, they are likely to be used in biorefineries in the production of chemical inputs to substitute fossil fuels. This substitution is possible due to the high contents of carbohydrates (>40%), low contents of extractives (<20%), ashes (<8%) and moisture (<8%) found in these residual biomasses. High calorific values of all residues also offer them the chance to be used in combustion. A principal components analysis (PCA) was performed for better understanding of the samples and their hysic-chemical properties. Thus, this study aimed to characterize...

Biochar and soil nitrous oxide emissions PAB
Alho,Carlos Francisco Brazão Vieira; Cardoso,Abmael da Silva; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues; Novotny,Etelvino Henrique.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of biochar application on soil nitrous oxide emissions. The experiment was carried out in pots under greenhouse conditions. Four levels of ground commercial charcoal of 2 mm (biochar) were evaluated in a sandy Albaqualf (90% of sand): 0, 3, 6, and 9 Mg ha-1. All treatments received 100 kg ha-1 of N as urea. A cubic effect of biochar levels was observed on the N2O emissions. Biochar doses above 5 Mg ha-1 started to mitigate the emissions in the evaluated soil. However, lower doses promote the emissions.
