Estimation of variance components and prediction of breeding values in rubber tree breeding using the REML/BLUP procedure Genet. Mol. Biol.
Furlani,Renata Capistrano Moreira; Moraes,Mario Luiz Teixeira de; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de; Furlani Junior,Enes; Gonçalves,Paulo de Souza; Valério Filho,Walter Veriano; Paiva,João Rodrigues de.
The present paper deals with estimation of variance components, prediction of breeding values and selection in a population of rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Müell.-Arg.] from Rio Branco, State of Acre, Brazil. The REML/BLUP (restricted maximum likelihood/best linear unbiased prediction) procedure was applied. For this purpose, 37 rubber tree families were obtained and assessed in a randomized complete block design, with three unbalanced replications. The field trial was carried out at the Experimental Station of UNESP, located in Selvíria, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The quantitative traits evaluated were: girth (G), bark thickness (BT), number of latex vessel rings (NR), and plant height (PH). Given the unbalanced...

Resolution of biodiversity and assemblage structure in demersal fisheries surveys: the role of tow duration ArchiMer
Moriarty, M.; Sell, A. F.; Trenkel, Verena; Lynam, C. P.; Burns, F.; Clarke, E. D.; Greenstreet, S. P. R.; Mcgonigle, C..
An experiment during a fisheries independent survey in the North Sea was conducted to test whether sampling effort could be reduced without a significant loss in data precision. To examine potential effects of reducing tow duration from the standard 30 min to a proposed 15 min estimates of species encounter rates, species richness, and estimates of abundance, biomass, and body size were analysed. Results show species richness estimates are lower in the short tow category. While biomass and abundance at length and body size are significantly affected by the change in tow duration, estimates of Large Fish Indicator, the Typical length and Mean-max length are not significantly affected by the regime change. The results presented here suggest that a reduction...

Use of Analytic Factor Structure to Increase Heritability of Clonal Progeny Tests of Pinus taeda L. Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Zapata-Valenzuela,Jaime.
Advanced variance-covariance structures are commonly used in genetic evaluation of crops to account for micro-site variability and achieve higher accuracy of predictions to increase selection efficiency. Various genetic variance-covariance structures were explored to predict best linear unbiased genetic merits of 453 loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) cloned progeny tested at 16 different locations in the southern U.S. Statistical models were compared using model fit statistics, variance components and genetic parameters. Among the models explored, spatial autoregressive error correlation with independent residual term for the R side with a factor analytic structure for the G side of the mixed model was superior. The model produced one of the smallest fit...
