Producción de maíz (Zea mays L.) en el estado de Puebla: Un enfoque de equilibrio espacial para identificar las zonas productoras más competitivas. Colegio de Postgraduados
Flores Cruz, Luis Alberto.

Influence of interest rate and the wood price in forest regulation models PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Carvalho, Kaio Henrique Adame de; Silva, Marcio Lopes; Leite, Helio Garcia; Binoti, Daniel Henrique Breda.
Forest production regulation is complex due to the large number of variables in the process. Economic variables consistently influence the results of regulation models. Therefore this study aims to analyze the influence of interest rate and wood price in some forest regulation models. Linear programming model was used in a studying case using data from 10 forest stands and the software Regulation of Forest Production, which was also used to simulate management and planning scenarios. All stands were regulated independently of the method used. It was observed that as the wood price raises, the annual cutting area becomes bigger and the average logging age decreases. The average annual production presented no change regardless of interest rate, wood price or...

VALUE OF FEED PEAS TO SWINE DIETS AgEcon
Wachenheim, Cheryl J.; Mattson, Jeremy W..
Traditionally, hog production has been concentrated in the Corn Belt region of the United States. During the past decade, North Carolina has become an important hog production state and now ranks second only to Iowa. More recently, expansion in the U.S. hog industry has been in other non-traditional hog production states in the west/west central regions of the United States. In the current study, field peas are considered as a least-cost hog ration ingredient in three U.S. markets. The results of a linear programming analysis suggest that peas can be an attractive alternative as a feed ingredient in hog diets. Even at relatively high prices, peas can be part of the least-cost diet replacing feedstuffs such as corn, barley, and soybean meal. Except at...

Interaktive Programmierungsansätze für die Gestaltung von Agrar- und Umweltprogrammen AgEcon
Kirschke, Dieter; Jechlitschka, Kurt.
Planning agricultural and environmental programmes has become a complex task. In this paper we show how interactive programming can help to solve such complex policy decision-making problems. The basic linear programming model is implemented with Excel. We show, for a hypothetical agricultural and environmental programme, how the approach can be used in an interactive way between scientists and policy decision-makers. The approach allows to visually demonstrate and quickly assess the consequences of changing assumptions and framework conditions on the programme design. It could effectively improve the quality of policy decision-making support; it requires the actors’ willingness, of course, to engage in a real dialogue.

Profitability and Resource Allocation Among Cotton and Peanuts When Considering Planting and Harvest Timeliness AgEcon
Meeks, Timothy A.; Flanders, Archie; Shurley, W. Donald; White, Fred C.; Gunter, Lewell F..
Harvest timeliness is a continual problem in rotation of cotton and peanuts. Efficient allocation of land and labor resources during production of cotton and peanuts requires decisions be made on allocating resources throughout the growing season. Of particular concern is efficient allocation during planting and harvesting. Through economic analysis and linear programming optimization, planting and harvesting timeliness issues are addressed and compared with prevailing practices. Results for a representative farm indicate that cotton planting should increase during the early period of the planting season as compared with current practice, and most cotton should be harvested before peanut harvest begins.

A Comparison of Parametric Approximation Techniques to Continuous-Time Stochastic Dynamic Programming Problems AgEcon
Kompas, Tom; Chu, Long.
We compare three parametric techniques to approximate Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations via unidimensional and multidimensional problems. The linear programming technique is very efficient for unidimensional problems and offers a balance of speed and accuracy for multidimensional problems. A comparable projection technique is shown to be slow, but has stable accuracy, whereas a perturbation technique has the least accuracy although its speed suffers least from the curse of dimensionality. The linear programming technique is also shown to be suitable for problems in resource management, including applications to biosecurity and marine reserve design.

THE ECONOMIC POTENTIAL OF VEGETABLE PRODUCTION FOR LIMITED RESOURCE FARMERS IN SOUTH CENTRAL ALABAMA AgEcon
Gan, Jianbang; Kebede, Ellene.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of vegetable production to enhance the declining farm income of limited resource farmers. A survey of 60 limited resource farmers in south central Alabama was undertaken to carry out this evaluation. Results of the survey show that 95% of the farmers had an annual farm income of less than $12,000. Linear programming methodology was applied to perform a whole-farm analysis of a representative farm developed from the data. The overall results show that vegetable production will significantly increase the annual income of these farmers. Some specific conclusions are that: (a) the total return from vegetable production depends on vegetable mixes; (b) vegetable production is labor intensive and...

SALMOD, a Salinity Management Tool for Irrigated Agriculture AgEcon
Armour, R.J.; Viljoen, Machiel F..
This paper presents an irrigation farm management tool, SALMOD (Salinity And Leaching Model for Optimal irrigation Development), that calculates the profit maximizing crop enterprise composition and irrigation management options for farm specific soil type, drainage status and irrigation system composition subject to various regional control measures and expected irrigation water salinities. After stating the water quality problem, and particularly salinisation in Southern Africa, the input data requirements and the results of SALMOD and their usefulness at farm level, are discussed. The impact of various possible regional or policy regulations are then discussed. SALMOD was developed for irrigators in the lower Vaal and Riet Rivers in South Africa. These...

Programming Regional Rural Development for Poland: A Research Perspective AgEcon
Ziolkowska, Jadwiga.
Since Mai 2004 Poland is a new EU member country and has, due to the short membership period, little experience in creating rural policy according to the EU regulations. Additionally, there is a centralised planning of rural policies. The aim of the poster is to present how financing of rural policy can be improved by means of scientific programming methods. The study shows how the modelling approach can be used to analyse the optimal budget allocation for the Polish Plan for Development of Rural Areas from a regional perspective to better reach defined objectives.

Modeling Greenhouse Gas Emissions on Diversified Farms: The Case of Dairy Sheep Farming in Greece AgEcon
Sintori, Alexandra; Tsiboukas, Kostas.
Agricultural activity has been identified as a considerable source of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Emissions from ruminant livestock farms are produced particularly due to CH4 emissions from enteric fermentation. Dairy sheep farming is the most important livestock production activity in Greece, characterized by a high degree of farm diversification. This paper addresses the issue of the evaluation of GHG emissions of Greek dairy sheep farms, through the use of a whole farm mathematical programming model that uses farm level data and optimizes total gross margin. Mathematical programming models are an appropriate tool, when addressing complex issues, such as GHG emissions. The analysis is undertaken on different farm types, instead of a representative...

Payments for environmental services : incentives through carbon sequestration compensation for cocoa-based agroforestry systems in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia AgEcon
Seeberg-Elverfeldt, Christina; Schwarze, Stefan; Zeller, Manfred.
Up to 25 percent of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions are caused by deforestation, and Indonesia is the third largest greenhouse gas emitter worldwide due to land use change and deforestation. On the island of Sulawesi in the vicinity of the Lore Lindu National Park (LLNP), many smallholders contribute to conversion processes at the forest margin as a result of their agricultural practices. Specifically the area dedicated to cocoa plantations has increased from zero (1979) to nearly 18,000 hectares (2001). Some of these plots have been established inside the 220,000 hectares of the LLNP. An intensification process is observed with a consequent reduction of the shade tree density. This study assesses which impact carbon sequestration payments for...

PRICE-RESPONSIVENESS OF DEMAND FOR IRRIGATION WATER WITHDRAWALS VS. CONSUMPTIVE USE: ESTIMATES AND POLICY IMPLICATIONS AgEcon
Young, Robert A.; Cardon, Grant E.; Scheierling, Susanne M..
Of water withdrawn for agricultural crop irrigation, a portion is consumed and the remainder comes back to the hydrologic system as return flows. Previous models of irrigation water demand have mostly focused on the change in withdrawals in response to price changes, even though knowledge of the response of consumptive use is often more significant for river basin planning. This study develops a simulation/mathematical programming model of water demand representing an irrigation company in northeastern Colorado to analyze the effect of hypothetical price increases on both the demand for withdrawals and a derived demand for consumptive use. The results demonstrate that consumptive use demand tends to be significantly less price-responsive than withdrawal...
