Última ขาวเจ๊ก ข้าวนาน้ำฝนสายพันธุ์ดีเด่นจังหวัดชัยนาท Thai Agricultural Anakkapon Boonchuay; Somphong Choeyphan. Chai Nat province still has some non-irrigated areas. Farmers in those areas can grow rice once a year with rainfed water. They usually grow good quality rice varieties for consumption in family and neighborhood. “Khao Jek” is local rice variety widely grow in Den Yai and Pri Nok-yung of Hankha district. The cooked eating qualities have soft texture and aroma. It’s the most favorite variety of local farmers. Chai Nat Rice Research Center collected this variety in 2004 and continuously improved by pureline selection, observation, intra-station, inter-station, farmers’ field yield trial, yield stability trial and promising line test. The study was to examine yield and active constituent on three varieties of Gynostemma pentaphyllum; such as Angkhang, Sibsong punna and Local variety for selecting a good variety which were grow at amphur Phurua Loei province with attitude approximately 900 matre from sea level. The transfered seedling from cutting one month old and 50% light shading. G. pentaphyllum was harvested at the age of 4 months (Apr - Jul 2011), dried with hot air oven at 60-65 ºc for 6 hours and determine total saponin content. It was found that fresh weight and dry weight were significant difference (p < 0.01) between the varieties. Although traditional rice germplasm in northeastern Thailand is only a small portion comparing to modern popular varieties, they are still grown throughout the region. Those traditional varieties grown in the lower part of the region are mostly non-glutinous varieties, while those grown in the upper part are glutinous ones. The existence of these traditional varieties in the region is not only because of growing for sale, but also due to some special reason, such as, believes in their medicinal and nutritional properties, culture and ancestor’s believes.
