NEW ALGAE RECORDS (CHLOROPHYCEAE AND BACILLARIOPHYCEAE CLASSES) FROM SIX PAMPEAN LOTIC SYSTEMS OF ARGENTINA Gayana Botánica
Mercado,Liliana M..
Nineteen new record species for Argentina belonged to Bacillariophyceae and Chlorophyceae Classes were identified as the result of the analysis of a total of 103 phytoplankton samples obtained from a 5-year study survey performed in 6 lotic systems from Buenos Aires province, tributaries of Río de la Plata river: Paraná de las Palmas river (1995-1996), Samborombón river, El Pescado, J. Blanco, Buñirrigo, Rodríguez and El Gato streams (1997-1998) and in a intensive study carried out in the last two systems (1999). The taxa are ilustrated, a range of physical and chemical water variables of the sampling sites in which each species was found is furnished, together with the environmental requirements, cited in the literature. The 16 % of the algae were...

Second floor, please: the fish fauna of floating litter banks in Amazonian streams and rivers Neotropical Ichthyology
Carvalho,Lucélia Nobre; Fidelis,Luana; Arruda,Rafael; Galuch,André; Zuanon,Jansen.
Floating litter banks are an ephemeral habitat consisting of branches, twigs, flowers, seeds, and fruits that are trapped on the stream water surface by a variety of retention mechanisms. These heterogeneous materials form a deep layer of dead plant matter that is colonized by a variety of organisms, including fish that forage on the aquatic macroinvertebrates found in this unique habitat. In this study, we aimed to characterize which fish species occupy the floating litter banks and their trophic characteristics, as well as determine if fish assemblage composition and species richness can be predicted by the size of the floating litter banks. Fish sampling was conducted in five rivers located in the Amazon basin. Of the 31 floating litter banks sampled...

Macroinvertebrates associated with bryophyta in a first-order Atlantic Forest stream Rev. Bras. Zool.
Rosa,Beatriz F. J. V.; Silva,Marcos V. D. da; Oliveira,Vívian C. de; Martins,Renato T.; Alves,Roberto da G..
This study describes the composition and structure of the benthic community associated with bryophytes in a first-order stream, located in a biological reserve of the Atlantic Forest, during two seasons. During three months of the dry season of 2007 and three months of the rainy season of 2008, samples of bryophytes attached to stones were collected randomly, along a 100 m stream reach. The structure of the community was analyzed through the mean density of individuals, Shannon's diversity index, Pielou's evenness, family richness, dominance index, and the percentage of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (% EPT). Chironomidae larvae were dominant in the two periods of study, followed by Ceratopogonidae in the rainy season, and Naididae in the dry...

Chironomidae (Insecta, Diptera) associated with stones in a first-order Atlantic Forest stream RChHN
ROSA,BEATRIZ F. J. V; VASQUES,MONIQUE; ALVES,ROBERTO G.
Stones are stable substrates in streams, usually sheltering high richness and abundance of invertebrates. To investigate the structure of the Chironomidae assemblages associated with stones in a first-order stream located in an Atlantic Forest reserve in two periods of the year, stones with diameters from 10 cm to 25 cm were collected along a stretch of 100 m in riffle areas, during three months in the dry season and three months in the rainy season. The structure of the community was analyzed for each period through calculation of observed richness, Shannon's diversity (H'), and Pielou's evenness. The ordination of the samples from the dry and rainy seasons was evaluated by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and the presence of indicator species in...

Coscinodiscophyceae and Fragilariophyceae (Diatomeae) in the Iguaçu River, Paraná, Brazil Acta Botanica
Nardelli,Margaret Seghetto; Bueno,Norma Catarina; Ludwig,Thelma Alvim Veiga; Tremarin,Priscila Izabel; Bartozek,Elaine Cristina Rodrigues.
A taxonomic survey was carried out on Coscinodiscophyceae and Fragilariophyceae found in the Iguaçu River catchment area within Iguaçu National Park, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Between September 2007 and August 2008, we collected 24 samples from two stations on the Iguaçu River, upstream and downstream of the falls. We identified 37 taxa, including 22 specific and infraspecific taxa of Coscinodiscophyceae, together with 15 specific and infraspecific taxa of Fragilariophyceae. Melosira ruttneri Hustedt and Fragilaria alpestris Krasske ex Hustedt represent new records for Brazil.

Soft-bodied benthic algae in pristine Brazilian streams: from acid to karst Acta Botanica
Fonseca,Bárbara Medeiros; Feijó,Lidia Mendes; Mendonça-Galvão,Luciana de.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated soft-bodied benthic algae from seven streams located in protected areas of central Brazil (Parque Nacional de Brasília, Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros and Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca), and related them to abiotic factors. We addressed the following questions: A) how algal community structure in Cerrado streams is influenced by the marked seasonality typical of the region; and B) how karst geology influences algal communities in Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca, as compared to streams in other Cerrado areas. Samples were collected between 2012 and 2013 from a single site in each stream, and upstream and downstream of caves present in Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca. Altogether, 159 taxa were recorded. Algal community...

Epiphytic Eunotia (Bacillariophyceae) on Podostemum from Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, including new observations on morphology and taxonomy of some rare recorded species Biota Neotropica
Cavalcante,Kaoli Pereira; Tremarin,Priscila Izabel; de Castro,Emanuela Cristina; de Azevedo Tibiriçá,Carlos Eduardo Junqueira; Wojciechowski,Juliana; Ludwig,Thelma Alvim Veiga.
Eunotia is a highly diverse diatom genus in the Neotropics. Considerable morphological variability of the valve showed in several species of the genus resulted in a quite confused taxonomy. Twelve Eunotiataxa attached to Podostemum spp. were investigated using the light microscopy (LM). Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in order to investigate the fine morphology of most abundant taxa. Samples were collected from four rivers from the State of Santa Catarina between March 2009 and July 2010. The freshwater diatom flora from this south Brazilian state is poorly known in relation to its neighboring states. Eunotia biseriatoides has intermediate features betweenEunotia and Perinotia, and the circumscription of these genera is discussed...
