Alpha-1 antitrypsin gene polymorphism in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Denden,Sabri; Khelil,Amel Haj; Knani,Jalel; Lakhdar,Ramzi; Perrin,Pascale; Lefranc,Gérard; Chibani,Jemni Ben.
Alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of emphysema, the pathological lesion underlying the majority of the manifestations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). In this study we tested the hypothesis that common AAT polymorphisms influence the risk of developing COPDs. We investigated PiM1 (Ala213Val), PiM2 (Arg101His), PiM3 (Glu376Asp), PiS (Glu264Val) and PiZ (Glu342Lys) SERPINA1 alleles in 100 COPD patients and 200 healthy controls. No significant differences were observed in allele frequencies between COPD patients and controls, neither did haplotype analysis show significant differences between the two groups. A cross-sectional study revealed no significant relationship between common SERPINA1 polymorphisms...

Long-term efficacy of a rural community-based integrated intervention for prevention and management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a cluster randomized controlled trial in China's rural areas BJMBR
Yuan,X.; Tao,Y.; Zhao,J.P.; Liu,X.S.; Xiong,W.N.; Xie,J.G.; Ni,W.; Xu,Y.J.; Liu,H.G..
This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a rural community-based integrated intervention for early prevention and management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in China. This 18-year cluster-randomized controlled trial encompassing 15 villages included 1008 patients (454 men and 40 women in the intervention group [mean age, 54 ± 10 years]; 482 men and 32 women in the control group [mean age, 53 ± 10 years]) with confirmed COPD or at risk for COPD. Villages were randomly assigned to the intervention or the control group, and study participants residing within the villages received treatment accordingly. Intervention group patients took part in a program that included systematic health education, smoking cessation counseling, and education on...

Cat ownership is associated with increased asthma prevalence and dog ownership with decreased spirometry values BJMBR
Simoneti,C.S.; Ferraz,E.; Menezes,M.B.; Icuma,T.R.; Vianna,E.O..
The association between pet ownership and the development of allergic and respiratory diseases has been the aim of several studies, however, the effects of exposure in adults remain uncertain. The aims of the present study were to investigate the prevalence of asthma and lung function status among dog and cat owners. This cross-sectional study was performed at two universities with students and workers who were allocated into 3 groups according to pet ownership in the previous year: cat owners, dog owners, and no pets (control group). Subjects underwent spirometry, bronchial challenge test with mannitol, skin prick tests, and questionnaires about animal exposures and respiratory symptoms. Control group comprised 125 subjects; cat owner group, 51 subjects;...

Indoor NO2 air pollution and lung function of professional cooks BJMBR
Arbex,M.A.; Martins,L.C.; Pereira,L.A.A.; Negrini,F.; Cardoso,A.A.; Melchert,W.R.; Arbex,R.F.; Saldiva,P.H.N.; Zanobetti,A.; Braga,A.L.F..
Studies of cooking-generated NO2 effects are rare in occupational epidemiology. In the present study, we evaluated the lung function of professional cooks exposed to NO2 in hospital kitchens. We performed spirometry in 37 cooks working in four hospital kitchens and estimated the predicted FVC, FEV1 and FEF25-75, based on age, sex, race, weight, and height, according to Knudson standards. NO2 measurements were obtained for 4 consecutive days during 4 different periods at 20-day intervals in each kitchen. Measurements were performed inside and outside the kitchens, simultaneously using Palm diffusion tubes. A time/exposure indicator was defined as representative of the cumulative exposure of each cook. No statistically significant effect of NO2 exposure on...

Decreased respiratory performance of children and adolescents with myelomeningocele who use a wheelchair – preliminary data BJMBR
Martins,E.J.; Gastaldi,A.C.; Davoli,G.B.Q.; Leonardi-Figueiredo,M.M.; Mattiello-Sverzut,A.C..
Myelomeningocele (MMC) is a neural tube defect that often causes spinal cord injury at the thoracolumbar region, as well as sensory and motor paralysis in the lower limbs. This leads to continuous use of a wheelchair and, consequently, a sedentary lifestyle, predisposition to muscle weakness, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, obesity, and structural alterations in the spine. We assessed the respiratory function and shoulder strength of MMC participants who were wheelchair-users and had no respiratory complaints and compared them to healthy children and adolescents. MMC (n=10) and healthy (n=25) participants of both genders with a mean age of 12.45 years (SD=2.1) were assessed for weight, height, respiratory performance, and isometric peak for...

Relationship between pulmonary function and indoor air pollution from coal combustion among adult residents in an inner-city area of southwest China BJMBR
Jie,Y.; Houjin,H.; Xun,M.; Kebin,L.; Xuesong,Y.; Jie,X..
Few studies evaluate the amount of particulate matter less than 2.5 mm in diameter (PM2.5) in relation to a change in lung function among adults in a population. The aim of this study was to assess the association of coal as a domestic energy source to pulmonary function in an adult population in inner-city areas of Zunyi city in China where coal use is common. In a cross-sectional study of 104 households, pulmonary function measurements were assessed and compared in 110 coal users and 121 non-coal users (≥18 years old) who were all nonsmokers. Several sociodemographic factors were assessed by questionnaire, and ventilatory function measurements including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), the FEV1/FVC ratio, and peak...

Protective effects of phosphodiesterase inhibitors on lung function and remodeling in a murine model of chronic asthma BJMBR
Campos,H.S.; Xisto,D.G.; Oliveira,M.B.G.; Teixeira,I.; Negri,E.M.; Mauad,T.; Carnielli,D.; Lima,L.M.; Barreiro,E.J.; Faffe,D.S.; Zin,W.A.; Lapa e Silva,J.R.; Rocco,P.R.M..
The aim of the present study was to compare the efficacy of a novel phosphodiesterase 4 and 5 inhibitor, LASSBio596, with that of dexamethasone in a murine model of chronic asthma. Lung mechanics (airway resistance, viscoelastic pressure, and static elastance), histology, and airway and lung parenchyma remodeling (quantitative analysis of collagen and elastic fiber) were analyzed. Thirty-three BALB/c mice were randomly assigned to four groups. In the asthma group (N = 9), mice were immunized with 10 µg ovalbumin (OVA, ip) on 7 alternate days, and after day 40 they were challenged with three intratracheal instillations of 20 µg OVA at 3-day intervals. Control mice (N = 8) received saline under the same protocol. In the dexamethasone (N = 8) and LASSBio596...
