CURRENT STATE OF THE COTTON AND TEXTILE INDUSTRY IN KAZAKHSTAN AgEcon
Azhimetova, Gulfari.
The textile industry of Kazakhstan is presented basically by enterprises created in period of centrally planned economy and as consequence. Low labor productivity, lacking equipment base and technologies, poor marketing are problems of the current state of industry. But, there are also advantages as a vicinity of potential cotton manufacturers - Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan. A free economic zone (FEZ) “Ontustik” has been established and a program of “Ontustik” FEZ development has been adopted for developing the cotton and textile cluster in Kazakhstan. The law “About development of the cotton branch” has been adopted in Kazakhstan to provide the textile enterprises with necessary raw material and to develop the domestic cotton growing.

FARM CERTIFICATION AND THE IMPLEMENTATION OF HACCP IN AGRICULTURE: A COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS AgEcon
Galan, Mari-Neatrice; Aubry, Christine; Maze, Armelle.
This article aims to highlight the methodological bases and principles, sometimes implicit, that have served as support for the development of a referential similar to the one retained as part of the French decree on "Agriculture Raisonnée", namely the Quali'Terre referential. We show that the innovations introduced by this referential are of various natures: i) a change of perspective by taking a position at the level of the farming system and not of a given parcel of land or production, ii) use of the HACCP method for identification and most especially the prioritization of risks and the preventive measures to be implemented, iii) the introduction of the concept of continual improvement for the farmer. Even, if from an agronomic point of view, the...

Improved Program Planning Approaches Generates Large Benefits in High Risk Crop Farming AgEcon
Musshoff, Oliver; Hirschauer, Norbert.
This paper examines whether there is room for the improvement of farm program decisions through the incorporation of mathematical optimization in the practical planning process. Probing the potential for improvement, we investigate the cases of four German cash crop farms over the last six years. The formal planning approach includes a systematic time series analysis of farmspecific single gross margins and a stochastic optimization model. In order to avoid solutions that simply exceed the farmer’'s risk tolerance, the apparently accepted variance of the observed program’'s total gross margin which represents an observable reflection of the individual farmer'’s risk attitude is used as an upper bound in the optimization. For each of the 24 planning...

Estudio de las diferencias de costes de produccion del cultivo de naranjo convencional, ecologico e integrado en la Comunidad Valenciana mediante el analisis factorial discriminante AgEcon
Moll, Elena Maria Peris; Igual, Juan Francisco Julia; Parisi, Sebastia Balasch.

SATISFACTION OF THE EMPLOYED IN FOOD BUSINESSES AND SUCCESS OF FOOD SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION AgEcon
Grujic, Radoslav; Grujic, Slavica; Durasinovic, Pejo; Pavlovic, Pero.
Efficiency of food safety management system application, such as HACCP system, depends on personnel employed in a company (salary, social status, job stability, superiors’ relation toward workers and relationship among workers themselves, knowledge background, etc). Results presented in this paper are the results of surveys conducted in food businesses in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A special part of the research is related to employees’ social status and employees’ opinion of their status in a company.

Location of Production and Consolidation in the Processing Industry: The Case of Poultry AgEcon
Goodwin, Harold L., Jr..
The poultry industry is the most vertically integrated of U.S. agriculture and food production and is rapidly progressing toward being one of the most concentrated. In 2002, the top 15 broiler states accounted for 94.4% of U.S. production. From 1982-2002, the top four broiler firms had a fivefold increase in Ready-to-Cook (R-T-C) pounds, a tripling of plants and four-and eight-firm concentration ratio increases of 27.9% to 48.2% and 44.1% to 66.6%. In a broad sense, chicken became more affordable, appealing, and available; total R-T-C pounds increased from 234 to 663 million pounds between 1982 and 2002.

Sophisticated Program Planning Approaches Generate Large Benefits in High Risk Crop Farming AgEcon
Musshoff, Oliver; Hirschauer, Norbert.
Agricultural production relies to a great extent on biological processes in natural environments. In addition to volatile prices, it is thus heavily exposed to risks caused by the variability of natural conditions such as rainfall, temperature and pests. With a view to the apparently lacking support of risky farm production program decisions through formal planning models, the objective of this paper is to examine whether, and eventually by how much, farmers’ “intuitive” program decisions can be improved through formal statistical analyses and stochastic optimization models. In this performance comparison, we use the results of the formal planning approach that are generated in a quasi ex-ante analysis as a normative benchmark for the empirically observed...

PRODUCTION PLANNING DEVELOPMENT AND PARADIGMS INTEGRATION AgEcon
Shmakov, Vladimir; Salganik, Viktor; Pesin, Alexander; Jludov, Viktor; Ledneva, Galina.
The paper reviews principles of different concepts of enterprise management including a theory of constrains, a Balanced Scorecard, lean production, Six Sigma. The authors believe that creating some mix or integration of these paradigms can bring extraordinary effect for production management. As example the modified Balanced Scorecard based on constraints and its application on Magnitorsk metallurgical enterprise in Russia is described.

This study aims to analyze the competitivity of the cotton production in Brazil and United States of America (USA) in terms of production costs, taking into consideration the 2003/04 crop season. In Brazil, data were colleted in “panel conferences” in the state of Mato Grosso (Campo Novo do Parecis and Pimavera do Leste) and also in the north of the Parana state. USA’s data came from secondary sources. The results showed that Brazil has a better competitivity, with good productivity, but high costs per hectare. The risk of the culture is high, given the short margins and the sunk costs. In USA, the average productivity is smaller than in Brazil; the costs are relatively high and the margins are negative in most regions. Results show that the sustainability...

Why Do Firms Strive to Be Green? Explaining the Adoption of Total Quality Environmental Management AgEcon
Harrington, Donna Ramirez; Khanna, Madhu; Deltas, George.
Many firms are undertaking environmentally friendly organizational change by applying the philosophy of Total Quality Management with its emphasis on reducing waste and increasing efficiency to improve their management of pollution. This paper investigates the factors that lead to total quality environmental management (TQEM) by large firms. We find that internal considerations stemming from a firm's technical capability, size of operations, and volume of past emissions are positively associated with the TQEM adoption decision. The first two factors are proxies for the firm's costs of adopting TQEM while the third factor is related to the benefits from increasing efficiency and waste reduction, and thus proxies for internally generated demand for TQEM. In...
