New dinoflagellate cyst species from the Calafate Formation (Maastrichtian), Austral Basin, Argentina Ameghiniana

The aim of this paper is to erect four new dinoflagellate cyst species from the Maastrichtian Calafate Formation, Austral Basin, Argentina. Andalusiella spinosa sp. nov. is strongly acrocavate and possesses a periphragm covered with spines. Palaeocystodinium pilatum sp. nov. has a periphragm densely covered with fine, flexuous, hair-like projections, shortening towards the end of the horns, and a finely granulate endophragm. The large peridinialean Caligodinium perforatum sp. nov. shows the hypocystal archeopyle typical for the genus, with a simple triplacoid opercular piece and a microfoveolate autophragm surrounded by a perforate flocculent calyptra. The "Tustea Puzzle": hadrosaurid (Dinosauria, Ornithopoda) hatchlings associated with Megaloolithidae eggs in the Maastrichtian of the Hateg Basin (Romania) Ameghiniana

Since 1991 when the coinciding occurrence of megaloolithid eggs and hatchlings of the hadrosaurid Telmatosaurus transsylvanicus was suggested by few limb bone remains found close to the first discovered eggs in the Hateg Basin, tens of eggs grouped in clutches together with neonate bones were unearthed within the place that become "Tustea nesting site". In the meantime the original vertical escarpment near the village of Tustea was leveled and converted into a horizontal platform. Ray-finned fishes (Osteichthyes, Actinopterygii) from the type Maastrichtian, the Netherlands and Belgium Naturalis

Ray-finned fishes are a diverse, but understudied, component of the Maastrichtian marine fauna of the southeast Netherlands (Limburg) and northeast Belgium (Liège-Limburg). The most extensive reviews of fishes from these uppermost Cretaceous deposits were made in the early and mid-Twentieth Century, but little research on this important assemblage has been executed since. The present paper provides figures and brief descriptions of fishes from the Maastrichtian type area as an aid for field identification of fossil discoveries. A simple key to common Maastrichtian fish teeth from this area is also included. A small lot of latest Cretaceous brittlestars from the Maastrichtian type area, contained in the Binkhorst [van den Binkhorst] Collection at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, is restudied and, in part, illustrated for the first time. Presumably, these thirteen specimens represent only a portion of the ophiuroid material referred to in two papers by Binkhorst van den Binkhorst, both published in 1859, because all are assignable to two species which are common only in the Nekum and Meerssen members of the type Maastrichtian, namely Felderophiura vanderhami Jagt, 1991, and Ophiomusium lux Jagt & Kutscher in Jagt, 2000. A synthesis of the stratigraphy of the Maastrichtian Stage in its extended type area, that is, southern Limburg (the Netherlands), and adjacent Belgian and German territories, is presented with a brief historical overview. Quarrying activities at the large quarry complex of ENCI-HeidelbergCement Group will officially come to an end on July 1, 2018. However, the stratotype section below the Lichtenberg farmstead and directly behind the main office building at the Lage Kanaaldijk (Maastricht), will be preserved, as will various faces within the quarry complex. Notes on taxonomy and taphonomy of two Upper Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous) scleractinian corals from Limburg, The Netherlands Naturalis

A lectotype has been assigned for Placosmilia? robusta Umbgrove, 1925. This taxon, although fitting into the original diagnosis of Placosmilia, is not defined by the emended diagnosis of Alloiteau and later authors. Specimens from the Upper Maastrichtian of The Netherlands, that were formerly wrongly attributed to Galaxea fasciculata (Lamarck, 1816), a homonym of the extant species Galaxea fascicularis (Linnaeus, 1758), belong to Placocoenia macrophthalma (Goldfuss, 1826). The specimen depicted as P. macrophthalma by Umbgrove does not belong to this taxon and is placed in open nomenclature.

A new species of icriocarcinid crab, Branchiocarcinus pacificus, is described from the uppermost Cretaceous Moreno Formation of California; in addition, an indeterminate species of the same genus is recorded from the Campanian of Hornby Island, Vancouver Island, Canada. The wide distribution of the Icriocarcinidae during the Late Cretaceous is confirmed.

Rare conifers from the type area of the Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous, southeast Netherlands) Naturalis

Two conifer twigs from the type area of the Maastrichtian are described as Brachyphyllum sp. 1 and Brachyphyllum sp. 2. They might belong to the Cheirolepidiaceae, Podocarpaceae or Taxodiaceae. Brachyphyllum sp. 1 occurs with the conifers Brachyphyllum patens (?Cheirolepidiaceae) and Elatidopsis cryptomerioides (Taxodiaceae), the seagrass Thalassocharis bosqueti and the ammonite Baculites vertebralis in the upper part of the Kunrade Chalk in the Kunrade area, while Brachyphyllum sp. 2 probably originates from the lower part of this deposit.

Sabellids and serpulids (Polychaeta sedentaria) from the type Maastrichtian, the Netherlands and Belgium Naturalis

Calcareous tubes of the sabellid genus Glomerula and of the family Serpulidae (subfamilies Serpulinae and Spirorbinae) rank amongst the commoner, highly diverse biota of the type Maastrichtian strata. These cover the sequence from the upper Beutenaken Member (Gulpen Formation) up to and including the Meerssen Member (Maastricht Formation). Of the 40+ taxa of calcareous worm tubes found in this interval, the commonest ones are described and illustrated in the present paper, which also comprises a revision of data published in 2005.

The south-western Indian Ocean islands, excluding the microcontinent of Madagascar, are geologically complex and diverse. They have been subject to drastic sea level changes, volcanic events and anthropogenic changes, all of which have contributed to confuse understanding of their avian biogeography. An array of factors have affected these avifaunas, based on palaeontological, historical and molecular evidence,which together have shown that avian biogeography is not congruent with the relative age and size of the islands.

A Late Cretaceous gastropod homing scar (possibly ichnogenus Lacrimichnus) from southern Limburg, The Netherlands Naturalis

An isolated gastropod homing scar, etched into an arcoscalpelline (cirripede) scutum, is recorded from the upper Nekum Member (Maastricht Formation, upper Maastrichtian) at the ENCI-HeidelbergCement Group quarry. This trace may be assignable to the ichnogenus Lacrimichnus Santos, Mayoral & Muñiz, that comprises etching scars produced by Neogene calyptraeid and/or capulid gastropods and ostreid bivalves from southern Spain and Portugal. However, it differs from both ichnospecies currently contained in that ichnogenus, L. bonarensis and L. cacelensis, in showing a relatively deep depression around the rim, irregularly distributed pit- and slit-like depressions, and an irregularly subcircular outline. The stratigraphic positions of the Wadi Dukhan and Al Uwayliah formations are reviewed. Diagnostic Maastrichtian larger foraminiferal species from the Wadi Dukhan Formation in well B7 – 41 (Cyrenaica) and in well U2 – 6 (northeastern Sirt Basin) are illustrated for the first time. These species are Omphalocyclus macroporus (Lamarck), Siderolites cf. calcitrapoides Lamarck and Orbitoides cf. media (d’Archiac). Following the rules of nomenclature, the type section of the Al Uwayliah Formation should be considered a composite stratotype. Belemnitellid coleoids (Mollusca, Cephalopoda) from the type Maastrichtian, the Netherlands and Belgium Naturalis

Belemnitellid coleoids abound at some levels within the Gulpen and Maastricht formations in the study area, and ‘belemnite graveyards’ have long been known from the Bovenste Bos (Epen) and Slenaken-Beutenaken areas in southern Limburg, the Netherlands. Recent studies have demonstrated the presence of at least three species of the genus Belemnitella d’Orbigny, 1840, and five of Belemnella Nowak, 1913, and its subgenera Belemnella, Pachybelemnella Schulz, 1979, and Neobelemnella Naidin, 1975. Representatives of Belemnitella junior Nowak, 1913, and Belemnella (Neobelemnella) gr. kazimiroviensis (Skołozdrówna, 1932) are the only coleoids to reach the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary, and members of the latter group may even have persisted into the earliest...

An additional record of Oichnus excavatus Donovan & Jagt from the Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous) of southern Limburg, The Netherlands Naturalis

A single example of Oichnus excavatus Donovan & Jagt, infesting the holasteroid echinoid Hemipneustes striatoradiatus (Leske), is reported from the upper Meerssen Member, Maastricht Formation (uppermost Maastrichtian), of the former Blom quarry, Berg en Terblijt, southern Limburg, The Netherlands. This is the first evidence that O. excavatus may be more widely distributed in the type area of the Maastrichtian than previously assumed. The embedment structure occurs just below the ambitus and close to the peristome, suggesting that the producing organism may have been ingesting detritus from the sea floor rather than filter feeding, the more usual interpretation of its behaviour.
