Prevalence of phenotypic resistance of Staphylococcus aureus isolates to macrolide, lincosamide, streptogramin B, ketolid and linezolid antibiotics in Turkey BJID
Adaleti,Riza; Nakipoglu,Yasar; Ceran,Nurgul; Tasdemir,Cihan; Kaya,Fatma; Tasdemir,Semiha.
The incidence of drug-resistant pathogens differs greatly between countries according to differences in the usage of antibiotics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenotypic resistance of 321 methicillin resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and 195 methicillin susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) in a total of 516 S. aureus strains to macrolide, lincosamide, streptogramin B (MLS B), ketolid, and linezolid. Disk diffusion method was applied to determine MLS B phenotype and susceptibility to different antibiotic agents. It was found that 54.6% of the isolates were resistant to erythromycin (ERSA), 48% to clindamycin, 55% to azithromycin, 58.7% to spiramycin, 34.7% to telithromycin, and 0.4% to quinupristin-dalfopristin, respectively. No strain...

In Vitro susceptibility of Gram-positive cocci isolated from skin and respiratory tract to azithromycin and twelve other antimicrobial agents BJID
Mendes,Caio M. F.; Sinto,Sumiko I.; Oplustil,Carmen Paz.
This study was conducted to evaluate the activity of azithromycin in comparison to 12 other antibacterial agents against recent isolates obtained consecutively from patients with respiratory tract or skin infections, from January to July, 2000. A total of 717 Gram-positive cocci were analyzed in this study and the following species were studied: Staphylococcus aureus (n=576), beta-hemolytic streptococci ( n=115), and Streptococcus pneumoniae (n=26). Susceptibility testing was carried out by the disk diffusion method and interpreted according to NCCLS breakpoints. The activity of azithromycin was compared to erythromycin, clindamycin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, oxacillin, penicillin, ceftriaxone, tetracycline, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole,...

Susceptibility profile of Brazilian Rhodococcus equi isolates against azithromycin, clarithromycin and erythromycin Ciência Rural
Gressler,Letícia Trevisan; Silveira,Bibiana Petri da; Schwab,Marcelo Luís; Vargas,Agueda Castagna de; Pötter,Luciana; Botton,Sônia de Avila.
Rhodococcus equi infection treatment is usually a macrolide (azithromycin - AZM, clarithromycin - CLR and erythromycin - ERY) and rifampicin combination. However, resistance cases have been reported, especially for ERY. In view of the need of a study about Brazilian isolates susceptibility profile, this study aimed to characterize the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the macrolides - AZM, CLR and ERY - against 44 R. equi isolates. It was found all isolates CLR and AZM sensitive; however, for ERY, 27% (12/44) were classified as intermediate sensitivity. R. equi Brazilian isolates used here showed a large susceptibility profile, except against ERY, for which it was observed some resistance evidence. In order to avoid failures in the equine...

Latex production with depolymerizing compounds of actin cytoskeleton in rubber trees PAB
Zheng-Quan,Gao; Chun-Xiao,Meng; Nai-Hao,Ye.
The objective of this work was to assess stimulated latex flow from rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) with saturated macrolide (latrunculin A), 1, 5, and 10% potassium iodide in 2% methylcellulose compared with 0.3% ethylene in 2% methylcellulose (check) and 2% methylcellulose (blank). Latex output and contents of pure rubber, total solid, sucrose, inorganic phosphorus, thiol, and Mg2+ were measured. The treatments containing 1% KI or saturated macrolide increased latex yields compared to the blank with 2% methylcellulose alone. The 1% KI or saturated macrolide treatments were equal to that of 0.3% ethylene check treatment. However, 5 and 10% KI were harmful to bark of rubber trees, even caused prolonged tapping panel dryness.
