Potential effects of mechanically removing macrophytes on the phytoplankton community of a subtropical reservoir Acta Botanica
Wojciechowski,Juliana; Burda,Tamires Marcela; Scheer,Mauricio Bergamini; Costa,Elaine Aparecida Dias da; Fernandes,Luciano Felício.
ABSTRACT Intensive growth of aquatic macrophytes interferes with water quality and ecosystem dynamics worldwide. Although mechanically removing macrophytes is the most commonly used method for their eradication, it can also cause undesirable disturbances in aquatic reservoir communities. We performed laboratory incubations of phytoplankton sampled before and after macrophytes were mechanically removed from the Piraquara II reservoir, South Brazil. We analyzed changes in growth and composition of the main phytoplankton groups with respect to nutrient shifting. Prior to removing the macrophytes, the phytoplankton community was dominated by low cell abundances of diatoms and flagellates. In contrast, growth rates of cyanobacteria (mainly Cylindrospermopsis...

Structure and dynamics of the community of periphytic algae in a subtropical reservoir (state of São Paulo, Brazil) Acta Botanica
Taniwaki,Ricardo Hideo; Borghi,Tatiana Cintra; Magrin,Albano Geraldo Emílio; Calijuri,Maria do Carmo; Bottino,Flávia; Moschini-Carlos,Viviane.
Much remains to be learned about biological diversity, which constitutes a valuable natural resource. Due to the pressure that human activity has put on natural resources, biodiversity has been reduced, often unbeknownst to those responsible for that activity. Therefore, we aimed to perform a quantitative and qualitative analysis of periphytic algae in the Itupararanga reservoir, correlating the results with the physical and chemical characteristics of the water, as well as with climatic conditions. To that end, five samples were collected at four sampling stations in the Itupararanga reservoir during the year 2010. Aquatic macrophytes were collected with a 156-cm² frame, and the periphytic algae were scraped free of the macrophytes with a brush. Samples...

Role of glutathione in tolerance to arsenite in Salvinia molesta, an aquatic fern Acta Botanica
Silva,Adinan Alves da; Oliveira,Juraci Alves de; Campos,Fernanda Vidal de; Ribeiro,Cleberson; Farnese,Fernanda dos Santos.
ABSTRACT In many plant species, tolerance to toxic metals is highly dependent on glutathione, an essential metabolite for cellular detoxification. We evaluated the responses of glutathione metabolism to arsenite (AsIII) in Salvinia molesta, an aquatic fern that has unexplored phytoremediation potential. Plants were exposed to different AsIII concentrations in nutrient solution for 24 h. AsIII caused cell membrane damage to submerged leaves, indicating oxidative stress. There was an increase in the glutathione content and ϒ-glutamylcysteine synthetase enzyme activity in the submerged and floating leaves. The glutathione peroxidase and glutathione sulfotransferase enzymes also showed increased activity in both plant parts, whereas glutathione reductase only...

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and dark septate fungi in plants associated with aquatic environments Acta Botanica
Marins,Josy Fraccaro de; Carrenho,Rosilaine.
ABSTRACT There have been several reports of symbionts in the roots of plants that live in aquatic environments. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are the most common microsymbionts and possibly recolonized the aquatic environment together with plants; however, their functions and the extent of their benefits are unclear. Furthermore, the presence of other groups of fungi, such as dark septate fungi (DSF), with functions supposedly analogous to those of mycorrhizal fungi, has also been reported. The present work provides a compilation of data regarding the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizae in plants from, or under the influence of, aquatic environments, and co-colonization by AMF and DSF. Forty species of non-vascular plants, ferns, fern allies, and...

PEREIRA,FABRICIO J.; CASTRO,EVARISTO M. DE; OLIVEIRA,CYNTHIA DE; PIRES,MARINÊS F.; PEREIRA,MARCIO P.; RAMOS,SILVIO J.; FAQUIN,VALDEMAR.
This study aimed at verifying the lead tolerance of water hyacinth and at looking at consequent anatomical and physiological modifications. Water hyacinth plants were grown on nutrient solutions with five different lead concentrations: 0.00, 0.50, 1.00, 2.00 and 4.00 mg L–1 by 20 days. Photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance and the Ci/Ca rate were measured at the end of 15 days of experiment. At the end of the experiment, the anatomical modifications in the roots and leaves, and the activity of antioxidant system enzymes, were evaluated. Photosynthetic and Ci/Ca rates were both increased under all lead treatments. Leaf anatomy did not exhibit any evidence of toxicity effects, but showed modifications of the stomata and in the thickness of the...

The invertebrate's community in adjacent Alto Iguaçu's anthropic lakes of different environmental factors Biota Neotropica
Krawczyk,Ana Carolina de Deus Bueno; Baldan,Lucíola Thais; Aranha,José Marcelo Rocha; Menezes,Márcia Santos de; Almeida,Cyntia Vilasboas.
Environmental differences occur between lentic and lotic communities' establishment, especially because of water time residence. Here we used a combination of field measurements and statistical analysis to evaluate the influent factors on the aquatic macroinvertebrates' composition and structure in 15 anthropogenic lakes from Alto Iguaçu's region. Macroinvertebrates were sampled from the marginal vegetation (with or without macrophytes) and sediment. Chemical parameters ranged among the anthropogenic lakes, mainly those which are connected to the Iguaçu River, beyond the presence or absence of macrophytes, interfering on the community's structure. Lake's morphometric data were measured in each lake and its relation to community was tested. The community...

Silva-Lehmkuhl,Angela Maria da; Tremarin,Priscila Izabel; Vercellino,Ilka Schincariol; Ludwig,Thelma A. Veiga.
Abstract: Knowledge of biodiversity in oligotrophic aquatic ecosystems is fundamental to plan conservation strategies for protected areas. This study assessed the diatom diversity from an urban reservoir with oligotrophic conditions. The Piraquara I reservoir is located in an Environmental Protection Area and is responsible for the public supply of Curitiba city and the metropolitan region. Samples were collected seasonally between October 2007 and August 2008. Periphytic samples were obtained by removing the biofilm attached to Polygonum hydropiperoides stems and to glass slides. The taxonomic study resulted in the identification of 87 diatom taxa. The most representative genera regarding the species richness were Pinnularia (15 species) and Eunotia (14...

Bioaccumulation and chemical forms of cadmium, copper and lead in aquatic plants BABT
Hu,JinZhao; Zheng,AiZhen; Pei,DongLi; Shi,GuoXin.
The cadmium(Cd), copper(Cu) and lead(Pb) accumulation, as well as their relative content of different chemical forms in Sagittaria sagittifolia L. and Potamogeton crispus L. were determined. The results showed that both the plants had the ability to accumulate large amounts of Cd, Cu and Pb, and they absorbed metals in dose-dependent manners. The roots of S. sagittifolia appeared more sensitive to Cd and Pb than the leaves of P. crispus. The potential of Cu uptake by these two plant tissues was similar. Under the same concentration, the uptake of Cu for both the plants was higher than Pb and Cd, while that of Pb was lowest. The Cd, Cu and Pb existed with various forms in the plants. Cd and Pb were mainly in the NaCl extractable form in S. sagittifolia and...

Comparison of diversity indices applied to macrophyte incidence-based data BABT
Evangelista,Heloísa Beatriz Antoniazi; Thomaz,Sidinei Magela; Evangelista,Luiz Roberto.
In this work, a recently proposed diversity index based on Patil and Taillie parametric diversity measure (or Tsallis entropy), Sq*, was applied to samples (presence-absence data) of macrophytes from the Itaipu Reservoir, Brazil. This new index was the value of the family of indices Sq for a specific evenness of a sample. Results demonstrated that the Shannon index and species richness showed expressively high correlation with the Sq*; however, the evenness had low correlation coefficients with the index Sq*, indicating that Sq* was particularly sensitive to rarity and species richness. On the other hand, the weak correlations of this index with evenness demonstrated that it was less sensitive to species relative abundances.

Effects of natural banks of free-floating plants on zooplankton community in a shallow subtropical lake in Southern Brazil BABT
Gazulha,Vanessa; Montú,Mônica; Marques,David da Motta; Bonecker,Claúdia Costa.
The aim of this study was to test the effects of natural free-floating plants on zooplankton distribution in a shallow subtropical lake. First, the hypothesis that free-floating plants have an effect on physico-chemicals, leading to a decrease on nutrient availability and influencing the phytoplankton biomass and zooplankton community was tested. Second, the hypothesis that free-floating plants act as a refuge for zooplankton was tested. Three microhabitats were selected: free-floating plants, littoral area and open water. Results demonstrated that the effects of different microhabitats on phytoplankton biomass and physico-chemicals were not significant, indicating a weak influence of the plants. Zooplankton densities were higher in free-floating plants...

Habitat complexity does not influence prey consumption in an experimental three-level trophic chain Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Granzotti,Rafaela V.; Muniz,Carolina M.; Gomes,Luiz C..
ABSTRACT Habitat complexity influences species diversity and regulates trophic interactions, mostly by increasing resource partitioning within habitats and providing refuge for prey. The influence of habitat complexity on more than two trophic levels is not well understood, mainly because behavioral modifications of prey and predator may influence the outcome of trophic interactions. Thus, we conducted a two-factor experiment with a three-level trophic chain: a piscivorous fish [Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (Spix & Agassiz 1829)], an invertivorous fish (Moenkhausia forestii Benine, Mariguela & C. de Oliveira, 2009) and an aquatic macroinvertebrate (Chironomidae larvae). We measured prey consumption in low, intermediate and high habitat complexity,...

Seasonal variations in photosynthetic irradiance response curves of macrophytes from a Mediterranean coastal lagoon ArchiMer
Plus, Martin; Auby, Isabelle; Verlaque, Marc; Levavasseur, Guy.
The main photosynthesis and respiration parameters (dark respiration rate, light saturated production rate, saturation irradiance, photosynthetic efficiency) were measured on a total of 23 macrophytes of the Than lagoon (2 Phanerogams, 5 Chlorophyceae, 10 Rhodophyceae and 6 Phaeophyceae). Those measurements were performed in vitro under controlled conditions, close to the natural ones, and at several seasons. Concomitantly, measurements of pigment concentrations, carbon, phosphorous and nitrogen contents in tissues were performed. Seasonal intra-specific variability of photosynthetic parameters was found very high, enlightening an important acclimatation capacity. The highest photosynthetic capacities were found for Chlorophyceae (e.g. Monostroma obscurum...
