BACKGROUND: In order to understand feeding ecology and habitat use of coral reef fish, fatty acid composition was examined in five coral reef fishes, Thalassoma lunare, Lutjanus lutjanus, Abudefduf bengalensis, Scarus rivulatus and Scolopsis affinis collected in the Bidong Island of Malaysian South China Sea. RESULTS: Proportions of saturated fatty acids (SAFA) ranged 57.2% 74.2%, with the highest proportions in fatty acids, the second highest was monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) ranged from 21.4% to 39.0% and the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was the lowest ranged from 2.8% to 14.1%. Each fatty acid composition differed among fishes, suggesting diverse feeding ecology, habitat use and migration during the fishes' life history in the... |

Abstract The risk of having microvascular complication is high among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients. However, factors associated with the glycemic control and progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in T2DM patients is limited. This study aims to determine association between anti-diabetic agents, glycemic control and progression of diabetic retinopathy in a Malaysian population. A retrospective study conducted in a tertiary teaching hospital in Malaysia, from January 2009 until March 2014. This study enrolled 104 patients aged 40-84 years, with a mean age 63.12 ± 9.18 years. patients had non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR, 77%) and 35% had proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Diabetic macula edema (DME) was present in 20% of NPDR... |

In the eastern side of the Malay Peninsula, thick successions of limestone formations preserve important records of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonic events. Here we investigate the strata- and fracture-bound hydrothermal dolomites in the Palaeozoic carbonates of the Kinta Valley, western Peninsular Malaysia. Based on their textural and morphologic characteristics, structural relationships with the host rock, different facies types, and associations with hydrothermal calcite and low-grade metamorphic marble, we attempt to trace their polyphase origin and relationship with thereto-tectonic events of the region. A detailed evaluation of the nature of brecciation and crystallization of polyphase dolomites, dolomitic limestones, limestones and marble, under... |

Layang-Layang is a small island part of an oceanic atoll in the Spratly Islands off Sabah, Malaysia. As the reef coral fauna in this part of the South China Sea is poorly known, a survey was carried out in 2013 to study the species composition of the scleractinian coral families Fungiidae, Agariciidae and Euphylliidae. A total of 56 species was recorded. The addition of three previously reported coral species brings the total to 59, consisting of 32 Fungiidae, 22 Agariciidae, and five Euphylliidae. Of these, 32 species are new records for Layang-Layang, which include five rarely reported species, i.e., the fungiids Lithophyllon ranjithi, Podabacia sinai, Sandalolitha boucheti, and the agariciids Leptoseris kalayaanensis and L. troglodyta. The coral fauna... |

Background Asian slow lorises (Nycticebus spp.) are one of few known venomous mammals, yet until now only one published case report has documented the impact of their venomous bite on humans. We describe the reaction of a patient to the bite of a subadult Nycticebus kayan, which occurred in the Mulu District of Sarawak in 2012.Findings Within minutes of the bite, the patient experienced paraesthesia in the right side of the jaw, ear and right foot. By 40 minutes, swelling of the face was pronounced. The patient was admitted to Mulu National Park Health Clinic/Klinik Kesihatan Taman Mulu Tarikh, at which time he was experiencing: swollen mouth, chest pain, mild abdominal pain, nausea, numbness of the lips and mouth, shortness of breath, weakness, agitation... |

Twenty-two new species of Hydroptilidae in six genera are described from Malaysia and Brunei: Ugandatrichia Mosely (1), Macrostactobia Schmid (1), Hydroptila Dalman (16), Oxyethira Eaton (1), and Hellyethira Neboiss (3). In addition, new distributional records of previously described species of Ugandatrichia (1), Hydroptila (2), Oxyethira (2) and Tricholeiochiton Kloet & Hincks (1) are given, and immatures of Macrostactobia are figured and described for the first time. Species check lists of Hydroptilini are included for West Malaysia, East Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak) and Brunei. |

The species of the genus Euagathis Szépligeti, 1900 (Braconidae: Bassinae (= Agathidinae)) from the Greater and Lesser Sunda Islands (including West Malaysia) are revised and keyed. The subfamily name Bassinae Nees, 1812, is used because it is senior to the commonly used subfamily name Agathidinae Nees, 1814. Twenty-two species are recognized, of which nine are new. The genus Holcotroticus Cameron, 1902, is synonymized with Euagathis Szepligeti, 1900, and Euagathis ruficollis (Cameron, 1902) is a new combination. The following species are synonymized: Euagathis pilosa Szépligeti, 1902, and E. creophora Cameron, 1905, with E. clathrata (Brullé, 1846); E. rufonigra Enderlein, 1920, with E. ruficollis (Cameron, 1902); Euagathis variabilis Enderlein, 1920,... |

An annotated facsimile of those pages of Alfred Russel Wallace’s notebook recording his consignments from the Malay Archipelago to his London agent, Samuel Stevens, is provided. Records of individual consignments are linked with the stages of Wallace’s and Charles Allen’s itineraries to which they relate and are amplified from data provided by Wallace elsewhere; wherever possible, dates and places of the despatch of consignments and of the dates of their receipt in London are noted; and the dates of material becoming available for study are established, chiefly from British Museum accessions registers. It is intended that this should provide readier access to scattered collection data and should in particular assist in determining what specimens may... |

The genotype of the genus Teleopsis Rondani, T. sykesii (Westwood) from India is redescribed: Teleopsis onopyxus Séguy is now considered a junior synonym of T. sykesii. T. onopyxus was described from Madagascar, but this type locality must be due to mislabelling. T. sykesii occurs in India and perhaps in Myanmar. Lectotypes are designated for T. sykesii and T. onopyxus. From Sarawak and Sabah, Teleopsis pallifacies spec. nov. is described. Among its type series of more than 200 specimens, single flies occurred with labels from Australia and Irian Jaya. These are also considered to be mislabelled. Teleopsis now becomes a purely Oriental genus with no representatives in the Australasian or Malagasy regions. For T. sykesii and T. pallifacies spec. nov., data... |

This paper aims to fill some gaps in the taxonomic knowledge of the genus Ptomaphaginus for the Sunda region (in insular and peninsular Southeast Asia). We have refrained from a full regional revision. However, we present new distribution records for the following previously described species: Ptomaphaginus murphyi Szymczakowski, 1970 (Malaysia); P. rufus Jeannel, 1936 (Malaysia); P. tarsalis Szymczakowski, 1964 (Sumatra); P. aff. scaphaner Szymczakowski, 1972 (Malaysia, Java); P. sinuatus Schilthuizen, 1984 (Java); P. baliensis Perreau, 1995 (Sumatra). We also name 12 new species: P. anas spec. nov. (Malaysia); P. bryantioides spec. nov. (Borneo); P. caroli spec. nov. (Borneo), P. similipes spec. nov. (Borneo); P. kinabaluensis spec. nov. (Borneo); P.... |
