Efficiency and productivity change of Estonian dairy farms from 2001 - 2009 AgEcon
Luik, Helis; Omel, Raul; Viira, Ants-Hannes.
The purpose of this paper is to analyse productivity change of Estonian dairy farms during the period 2001-2009. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) was used to estimate the technical efficiency of producers and Malmquist productivity index for analysis of productivity change. Estonian FADN data was used in analysis. Performed analysis indicated that Estonian EU accession in 2004 increased considerably total factor productivity. Farm gate milk prices have considerable effect on total factor productivity change. Number of cows and milk yield has positive and dependence on subsidies, stocking density and capital to working hours ratio have negative effects on total factor productivity change.

Aggregation Issues in the Estimation of Linear Programming Productivity Measures AgEcon
Shaik, Saleem; Mishra, Ashok K.; Atwood, Joseph A..
This paper demonstrates the sensitivity of the linear programming approach in the estimation of productivity measures in the primal framework using Malmquist productivity index and Malmquist total factor productivity index models. Specifically, the sensitivity of productivity measure to the number of constraints (level of dis-aggregation) and imposition of returns to scale constraints of linear programing is evaluated. Further, the shadow or dual values are recovered from the linear program and compared to the market prices used in the ideal Fisher index approach to illustrate sensitivity. Empirical application to U.S. state-level time series data from 1960-2004 reveal productivity change decreases with increases in the number of constraints. Further,...

A two-stage productivity analysis using bootstrapped Malmquist index and quantile regression AgEcon
Kaditi, Eleni A.; Nitsi, Elisavet I..
This paper examines the effects of farm characteristics and government policies in enhancing productivity growth for a sample of Greek farms, using a two-stage procedure. In the 1st-stage, non-parametric estimates of Malmquist index and its decompositions are computed, while a bootstrapping procedure is applied to provide their statistical precision. In the 2nd-stage, the productivity growth estimates are regressed on various covariates using a bootstrapped quantile regression approach. The effect that the covariates exert on productivity growth of the average producer is analyzed, as well as the marginal effect of a given covariate for individuals at different points in the conditional productivity distribution. The results indicate that there exists...
