MAMÍFEROS URBANOS COLOMBIANOS: UNA REVISIÓN DE LO QUE SABEMOS Y LO QUE NOS FALTA Acta biol.Colomb.

Paleobiology of Pleistocene ground sloths (Xenarthra, Tardigrada): biomechanics, morphogeometry and ecomorphology applied to the masticatory apparatus Ameghiniana
Bargo,M. Susana; Vizcaíno,Sergio F..
The fossil xenarthrans include giant forms, the ground sloths (Tardigrada), characteristic of the mammal fauna of the Pleistocene of South America. Although most authors agree in considering them as herbivorous, these forms have not been studied in terms of detailed morpho-functional analyses of their masticatory apparatuses. The aim of this work is the study the masticatory apparatus of the large Pleistocene ground sloths Glossotherium robustum, Lestodon armatus, Mylodon darwini and Scelidotherium leptocephalum (Mylodontidae) applying biomecanichal and morphogeometrical methods, and to compare with the information obtained for Megatherium americanum (Megatheriidae). The results are integrated with recent ecomorphological analyses that include three...

Dental occlusal surface area in relation to body mass, food habits and other biological features in fossil xenarthrans Ameghiniana
Vizcaíno,Sergio F.; Bargo,M. Susana; Cassini,Guillermo H..
The Xenarthra includes the most intriguing mammals from the Cenozoic of South America: the glyptodonts (Cingulata) and the ground sloths (Tardigrada). Their masticatory apparatuses are diverse and peculiar, with a strongly reduced, hypselodont dentition that lacks enamel and displays different degrees of lobation. The goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between dental occlusal surface area (OSA) and diet, and other physiological factors in fossil xenarthrans. Over one hundred and fifty specimens, including living herbivorous epitherians and both extinct and living xenarthrans, were measured and photographed, and their OSA estimated and plotted against body mass. For most fossil xenarthrans OSA is smaller than expected for extant...

On the taxonomic status of Megatherium sundti Philippi, 1893 (Mammalia: Xenarthra: Megatheriidae) Ameghiniana
De Iuliis,Gerardo.
Remains of a medium-sized megathere from Pleistocene deposits near Ulloma, Bolivia, suggest that the commonly accepted synonymy of Megatherium sundti Philippi, 1893 with Megatherium medinae Philippi, 1893 (Mammalia: Xenarthra: Megatheriidae) is unjustified. The strongest evidence supporting the distinction of these species is provided by their femora. In M. medinae the femur is plesiomorphic, bearing nearly parallel lateral and medial margins and an unreduced patellar trochlea. In M. sundti the femur bears strongly concave lateral and medial margins and a somewhat reduced patellar trochlea, resembling the derived condition in Megatherium americanum Cuvier, 1796. Less marked morphological differences in the skull, mandible, and tibia are apparently...

Abstract: Human-modified landscapes (HMLs) are composed by small, isolated and defaunated forest fragments, which are surrounded by agricultural and urban areas. Information on species that thrives in these HMLs is essential to direct conservation strategies in local and regional scales. Since HMLs are dominant in the Atlantic Forest, we aimed to assess the mammalian diversity in a HML in southeastern Brazil and to propose conservation strategies. We collected data of terrestrial (small-, medium- and large-sized) and volant mammals in three small forest fragments (10, 14 and 26 ha) and adjacent areas, between 2003 and 2016, using complementary methods: active search, camera trapping, live-traps, mist nets and occasional records (i.e., roadkills). In...

Shelter availability and use by mammals and birds in an Atlantic forest area Biota Neotropica
Beisiegel,Beatriz de Mello.
This paper describes the types of ground-level shelters, their availability and use by mammals and birds at Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho (PECB), an Atlantic forest area at southeastern Brazil. Eight types of shelters were found: shelters without tunnels under living trees, shelters with tunnels under living trees, shelters under mounds formed by adventitious roots, shelters under fallen trees, burrows not supported by trees or roots, riverbank shelters, stream tunnels and rock shelters. Mammal species that used shelters more frequently were Agouti paca, Philander frenata, Lontra longicaudis, Metachirus nudicaudatus and Trinomys iheringi. Utilization of shelter types and shelter topographic locations by these six species was roughly similar to the...

Non-volant mammals of Carlos Botelho State Park, Paranapiacaba Forest Continuum Biota Neotropica
Brocardo,Carlos Rodrigo; Rodarte,Raisa; Bueno,Rafael da Silveira; Culot,Laurence; Galetti,Mauro.
The Atlantic Forest is one of the most studied Brazilian biomes in relation to its mammalian fauna. However, there is still a series of gaps of knowledge about the distribution and persistence of some of these species which prevents taking adequate conservation measures to better protect the mammals. In order to make the inventory of the non-volant mammalian fauna of the Carlos Botelho State Park (SP), we compiled data of camera trapping, diurnal census, track records, pitfall and live trapping collected over 8 years (2004-2012). We registered a total of 53 species, of which 12 are regionally threatened and one is an exotic species (Lepus europaeus), including the presence of most mammal species expected for the Paranapiacaba Forest Continuum. The high...

Rocha-Mendes,Fabiana; Neves,Carolina Lima; Nobre,Rodrigo de Almeida; Marques,Renato Matos; Bianconi,Gledson Vigiano; Galetti,Mauro.
This study presents data on the composition and species richness of non-flying mammals in the northern part of the Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, called Núcleo Santa Virgínia (NSV - around 17000 hectares of Atlantic Forest), São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil. The species list was based on ca. 660 km of line-transects, 25512 hours of cameras traps, 7740 trap.nights for small mammals, and 394 track-station.days, as well as occasional records and registers from local people (period 2002 to 2009). Based on these complementary methods, a total of 58 species were recorded from the 85-104 possible. Eighteen taxa are listed in the Brazilian endangered species list, 29 in the state list. The high species richness of non-volant mammals and the presence of...

Changes in Mammalian Body Length over 175 Years—Adaptations to a Fragmented Landscape? Ecology and Society
Schmidt, Niels Martin; Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University; nms@kvl.dk; Jensen, Per Moestrup; Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University; pmj@kvl.dk.
The potential consequences of anthropogenic habitat fragmentation on species diversity and extinction have drawn considerable attention in recent decades. In many cases, traditional island biogeography theory has been applied to explain the observed patterns. Here, we propose that habitat fragmentation as a selective force can be traced in mammalian body length changes. By exploring historical sources, we are able to show that the body length of Danish mammals has altered over a period of 175 years, possibly in response to increasing habitat fragmentation. The rate of body length change was generally lowest in medium-sized mammals, and increased with both smaller and larger body mass. Small mammals have generally increased, whereas large mammals have...

Mammals of the Cosigüina Peninsula of Nicaragua Mastozool. neotrop.
Genoways,Hugh H.; Timm,Robert M..
Nicaragua's Cosigüina Peninsula, located at the northwestern tip of the country, is one of the most poorly studied biotic regions in Central America. The peninsula has been occupied for millennia because the climate of the region supported human habitation and because of its strategic position along the rich Pacific coast. The combination of long-term occupancy by humans and the cataclysmic eruptions of Volcán Cosigüina have produced a heavily impacted landscape. During the 1960s, the University of Kansas conducted multiyear field surveys of the terrestrial mammals on the peninsula and the adjacent mainland to quantify species diversity, relationships, abundances, habitat use, and reproduction. The mammalian fauna of the peninsula contains at least 39...

The Cerro de los Batallones (Los Batallones Butte) is located in the central-northern area of the Madrid Basin, central Spain. Nine vertebrates localities containing a large variety of mammals of Upper Vallesian Age (Late Miocene) have been found associated with the sediments forming the butte. From bottom to top, these sediments consist of magnesian lutite beds (Unit I), paleosols formed of sepiolite and opal (Unit II), and siliclastic, marlstone and carbonate beds (Unit III). The set of ERT profiles developed in Los Batallones Butte have demonstrate that electrical imaging techniques are an estimable tool for the characterization and prospecting of fossil sites developed in fine-grained siliciclastic sequences. These localities contain an exceptionally...

Multivariate analysis of Morphological characters of Pipistrellus Pipistrellus (Schreber, 1774) and P. Nathusii (Keyserling & Blasius, 1839) (Mammalia: Chiroptera) from the Netherlands Naturalis
Grol, B.P.F.E..
Within the Vespertilionidae the genus Pipistrellus Kaup, 1829 is characterized by the presence of a calcar lobe (epiblema) attached to the calcar bone, the presence of two upper premolars on each side and a forearm length smaller than 38 mm. Two representatives of this genus occur in The Netherlands: Pipistrellus pipistrellus (Schreber, 1774) and P. nathusii (Keyserling & Blasius, 1839). These two species probably are closely related and are difficult to distinguish. Many authors over the years have used different morphological, dental and skull characters to differentiate these species. In this study the characters are divided into two groups: descriptive characters and biometric characters. Scanning electron photographs indicate a more pronounced...
