Morphological and topographic knowledge of the mandibular canal is of paramount importance during dental procedures in the jaw, as structures that go through this canal must be preserved. The aim of this study was to make a morphologic and morphometrical analysis of the course and relations of the mandibular canal of adult men and women, in two different age groups. The sample was composed of 300 panoramic radiographs divided into 4 groups: Groups F1 and F2: women (ranging between 18-40 years, and over 40 years of age, respectively); Groups M1 and M2:men (ranging between 18-40 years and over 40 years of age, respectively). Seven linear vertical measurements were performed in the radiographs to describe the course of the mandibular canal, and its and... |

To prevent injury to the inferior alveolar nerve during dental procedures, knowledge of its anatomical location and course of the mandibular canal is imperative. The aim of this study was evaluate the location on panoramic radiographs of the mandibular canal in relation to the apices of the permanent mandibular molars and base mandible, and relate the type of mandibular canal with Angle classes I, II and III. We evaluated 748 panoramic radiographs distributed according to sex and occlusal class (Angle I, II and III) of fully dentate individuals, 1851 age group. The radiographs were divided according to Angle classes based on cephalometric tracing, clinical data from the medical records of each individual and the analysis of of the maxillar and mandibular... |

The mental foramen (MF), located in the body of mandible in the region below the inferior premolars, is the anatomical structure through which the mental neurovascular bundle emerges. The MF can be seen clearly in panoramic X-rays. The object of the present study was to carry out a literature review in order to identify the frequency and position of the MF in panoramic X-rays. We looked for articles in the SCiELO, Pubmed, Scopus, LILACS, Web of Science and EBSCOhost databases, for the years 2006 to 2016. The key words used were "mental foramen", "mandibular canal", "inferior alveolar nerve", "anatomy" and "panoramic X-ray". Once the articles had been selected, an analysis was made of their methodological quality; poor-quality articles were excluded. In... |

The lower third molar region is an important region for the odontostomatological practice, since it presents a great amount of pathological processes related to the development and eruption of the third molar; thus having a considerable number of surgical interventions. Despite its importance, this region is not accounted for in anatomical terminology nor is it described in topographic anatomy; and in spite of the great number of studies that analyze the surgical anatomy of the region, it is necessary to systematize the description of its boundaries, planes, content, risk elements, anatomical repairs, etc.; therefore, the purpose of the present article is to review the modern concepts related to the surgical anatomy of the lower third molar region and to... |
