Las especies del género Schwartzia (Complejo Norantea, Marcgraviaceae) en Brasil Darwiniana

Schwartzia es un pequeño género de la familia neotropical Marcgraviaceae que comprende 17 especies. Éste se distribuye en bosques húmedos de tierras bajas o en bosques montanos de niebla desde Costa Rica hasta el sur de Brasil y también en las Antillas Menores. En esta contribución se tratan tres especies, todas endémicas de Brasil, una de las cuales se describe como nueva. Cada taxón se describe y además se brindan datos acerca de su distribución geográfica y ecología. Además se provee una clave para la identificación de los taxones presentes en Brasil.

Relationships within balsaminoid Ericales: a wood anatomical approach Naturalis

Wood samples of 49 specimens representing 31 species and 11 genera of woody balsaminoids, i.e., Balsaminaceae, Marcgraviaceae, Pellicieraceae, and Tetrameristaceae, were investigated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The wood structure of Marcgraviaceae, Pellicieraceae, and Tetrameristaceae is characterized by radial vessel multiples with simple perforation plates, alternate vessel pitting, apotracheal and paratracheal parenchyma, septate libriform fibers, and the presence of raphides in ray cells. Tetrameristaceae and Pellicieraceae are found to be closely related based on the occurrence of unilaterally compound vessel-ray pitting and multiseriate rays with long uniseriate ends. Palynological Variation in Balsaminoid Ericales. I. Marcgraviaceae Naturalis

Background and Aims Marcgraviaceae are a rather small family of seven genera and approx. 130 neotropical species. This study aims to present a detailed palynological survey of the family in order to comment on the intrafamily relationships and possible correlations with pollinators. Methods In total, 119 specimens representing 67 species and all genera are observed using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, eight species from five genera are studied with transmission electron microscopy. Woody woodpecker enjoys soft drinks: the blond-crested woodpecker seeks nectar and pollinates canopy plants in south-eastern Brazil Biota Neotropica

Insects are the staple diet of woodpeckers, but some species also habitually feed on fruits. A few woodpecker species are recorded as flower visitors for nectar intake. We report here on the blond-crested woodpecker (Celeus flavescens) taking nectar from flowers of two canopy species, Spirotheca passifloroides (Bombacaceae) and Schwartzia brasiliensis (Marcgraviaceae), in the Atlantic forest of south-eastern Brazil. Spirotheca passifloroides blooms for three months in the austral winter, whereas S. brasiliensis blooms for two months in the summer. Flowers of both species produce large amounts of dilute nectar.
