Abortion in association with transplacental Theileria equi infection in a mare from the State of Espírito Santo, southeast Brazil: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,A.R.; Pinheiro,G.R.G.; Souza,T.D.; Flecher,M.C.; Santos,R.L..
ABSTRACT Equine piroplasmosis is a tick-borne disease caused by the protozoan parasites Babesia caballi and Theileria equi. We report a case of abortion in association with transplacental Theileria equi infection in a mare from the State of Espírito Santo, southeast Brazil. An apparently healthy mare aborted at the tenth month of gestation. At necropsy, the subcutaneous tissue, skeletal muscles, and visible mucosae of the aborted fetus were pale, and there was moderate hydrothorax and marked splenomegaly. Microscopic findings included splenic lymphoid hyperplasia and nephrosis. Merozoite-infected erythrocytes were found within blood vessels of all organs examined and were most numerous in the brain. DNA extracted from the spleen, liver, kidney, and thymus...

Composition of milk and mammary gland health in Criollo breed mares during lactation Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Costa,G.V.; Bondan,C.; Alves,L.P.; Rechsteiner,S. Fiala.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the components of milk and mammary gland health of Criollo mares. A total of 12 mares coming from a farm in southern Brazil were used. Samples of milk were taken from each mare every two weeks up to 180 days of lactation. The characteristics analyzed were fat, protein, lactose, total solids, somatic cell count (SCC) and total bacterial count (TBC). In relation to the health of the udder and the milk of the mares, the SCC was 24.1 x 103cells / ml and TBC was 44 x 103CFU / ml, while the average of milk components was 0.57% fat, 1.95% protein, 6.71% lactose and 9.24% total solids. Stage of lactation and individual characteristics may influence the level of milk components. The low SCC and TBC found in the Criollo...

Growth and Differentiation Factor-9 Supplementation Affects Viability and Morphology of Preantral Follicles in Equine Ovarian Fragments During Short-term in vitro Culture BABT
Marino,Polyana Carolina; Bizarro-Silva,Camila; Búfalo,Isabela; Rosa,Camila Oliveira; Gonçalves,Gustavo Romero; Lisboa,Livia Aires; Seneda,Marcelo Marcondes.
Abstract This study aimed to evaluate different concentrations of growth and differentiation factor-9 (GDF-9) on the development and maintenance of equine preantral follicle morphology during short-term in vitro culture. Ovaries (n=5) from five mares were collected from a local slaughterhouse and transported to the laboratory, where nine fragments (5x5x1mm) were procured from each ovary. One fragment from each was immediately fixed and submitted for histological analysis (control group; D0). The other eight fragments were cultured in situ for two (D2) or six (D6) days in MEM+ or MEM+ supplemented with GDF-9 at different concentrations (i.e., 50, 100 and 200 ng/mL the GDF-9). After culturing with different concentrations of GDF-9 for 2 or 6 days, the...

Gasless Laparoscopic Anatomy and Renal Biopsy of the Kidney in the Standing Mare International Journal of Morphology
Kassem,Mostafa M; El-Kammar,Mahmoud H; Alsafy,Mohamed A.M; El-Gendy,Samir A.A; Sayed-Ahmed,Ahmed; EL-Khamary,Ahmed N.
The current study aimed to provide the topography and renal biopsy of the standing mare kidneys by laparoscopy w ithout CO2 insufflation and to compare between the use of biopsy needle and forceps. Five clinically healthy adult nonpregnant mares weighing 250300 Kg and aging 79 years were used in the current work. The gasless laparoscopic renal biopsy appeared simple, safe, reliable, minimal invasive, timesaving and economical technique. The parallel biopsy portals provided easy and accessible biopsy procedure than dorsal or ventral portals. The biopsies taken from the lateral surface were less hemorrhagic than those taken from the caudal pole. This study recommended the laparoscopic forceps because the biopsy forceps provided satisfactory and...

EVA: EQUINE VIRAL ARTERITIS AND THE U.S. HORSE INDUSTRY AgEcon
Garber, Lindsey.
The National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) is sponsored by the USDA:APHIS:Veterinary Services (VS). The NAHMS Equine '98 Study was designed to provide information about the nation's equine population for education and research purposes. Equine viral arteritis population for education and research purposes. Equine viral arteritis (EVA) is an infectious disease caused by the equine arteritis virus (EAV). It can cause abortion in pregnant mares and death in young foals. Breeding stallions may become permanent carriers of the virus. Financial losses may include those due to abortion and/or disease and death in very young foals, reduced demand to breed and/or decreased commercial value of persistently infected stallions, and denied export market for...

EQUINE '98, PART IV: REFERENCE OF HEALTH MANAGEMENT FOR HORSES AND HIGHLIGHTED DISEASES, 1998 AgEcon
Garber, Lindsey.
The National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) is sponsored by the USDA:APHIS:Veterinary Services (VS). The NAHMS Equine '98 Study was designed to provide information about the nation's equine population for education and research purposes. This report is based on the second phase of Equine '98 data collection done by Federal and State Veterinary Medical Officers (VMO's) and Animal Health Technicians (AHT's) in 28 states. From June 15 through September 11, 1998, horse management and health data were collected on-farm from 1,136 participating operations that had three or more horses present on January 1, 1998. This target population was estimated to represent 51.6 percent of operations with horses in the 28 states and 83.9 percent of horses in the 28...

Use of long-acting progesterone to acyclic embryo recipient mares R. Bras. Zootec.
Greco,Gabriel Maksoud; Burlamaqui,Fábio Luis Gonçalves; Pinna,Aline Emerim; Queiroz,Fernando José Rohen de; Cunha,Maria Pia dos Santos; Brandão,Felipe Zandonadi.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of cyclic and acyclic progesterone-treated recipient mares in a commercial embryo transfer program. Acyclic recipients were treated with decreasing amounts of estradiol cypionate (ECP® - Pfizer Saúde Animal, São Paulo, Brazil), followed by 1500 mg of a sustained-release progesterone injection (P4LA150® - Laboratórios B.E.T., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Out of all 1506 embryo recovery attempts performed, 59.36% were positive (894/1506). Pregnancy rates of cyclic and acyclic mares were, respectively, 44.12% (319/723) and 57.68% (139/241) - higher in acyclic recipients under progesterone treatment. Embryo loss was similar between groups (9.72% 31/319 vs. 11.51% - 16/139). When fertility data on acyclic...
