Benthic Foraminiferal response to sea level change in the mixed siliciclastic-carbonate system of southern Ashmore Trough (Gulf of Papua) ArchiMer
Carson, Brooke E.; Francis, Jason M.; Leckie, R. Mark; Droxler, Andre W.; Dickens, Gerald R.; Jorry, Stephan J.; Bentley, Sam J.; Peterson, Larry C.; Opdyke, Bradley N..
Ashmore Trough in the western Gulf of Papua (GoP) represents an outstanding modern example of a tropical mixed siliciclastic-carbonate depositional system where significant masses of both river-borne silicates and bank-derived neritic carbonates accumulate. In this study, we examine how benthic foraminiferal populations within Ashmore Trough vary in response to sea level-driven paleoenvironmental changes, particularly organic matter and sediment supply. Two 11.3-m-long piston cores and a trigger core were collected from the slope of Ashmore Trough and dated using radiocarbon and oxygen isotope measurements of planktic foraminifera. Relative abundances, principal component analyses, and cluster analyses of benthic foraminiferal assemblages in sediment...

Firm Size Distribution and Performance of Maize and Fertilizer Traders After Market Liberalisation: Evidence from Kenya AgEcon
Mose, Lawrence Obae; Burger, Kees.
Improvement in the performance of agricultural markets was the ultimate goal of market liberalisation. In this paper, firm (trader) size distribution as a factor influencing market performance is analyzed using maize and fertilizer traders from Kenya. Firm size distribution was assessed by analyzing the normality of the distribution on volume traded. Performance was assessed by the level of competition (using Hirschman-Herfindahl index), marketing margins and marketing costs. Results show that firm size distribution for both commodities is log-normally distributed but positively skewed indicating a tendency towards smaller than larger firms. A plausible explanation is that faced with inadequate financial resources and inadequate business experience, new...

Scheduling and Routing Milk from Farm to Processors by a Cooperative AgEcon
Prasertsri, Peerapon; Kilmer, Richard L..
A milk marketing cooperative (MMC) was created by Florida dairy farmers to link the primary supply of fluid milk with the derived demand of processors in the vertical market. For any given milk supply, the revenue or return to farmers per unit of milk is the average milk price received by the MMC minus the MMC’s transfer cost. An important task for the MMC is to operate the fluid milk hauling system that optimizes the MMC’s milk transfer cost (routing and scheduling cost) subject to farm and plant schedules. The objective of this study is to determine if it is economically feasible to implement a more efficient routing and scheduling of farm-to-plant milk collection by the MMC.
