Larval rearings were performed with seawater either freshly pumped or after storage in a pond. Concerning bacterial populations these waters were characterized by a high diversity, little sized bacteria whose few of them (1%) were cultivable on Zobell medium. In the tanks, the bacterial ecosystem was modified by the presence of antibiotics, larvae and algae: the diversity was lowered, the cellular volume was increased by a factor 2 to 5, 100% bacteria were cultivable and chloramphenicol resistant, and their metabolism changed. Taxonomic screening showed no differences among the two waters neither at the beginning nor at the end of the rearings. However, depending on the water (stored or not) differences were identified for bacterial physiology and... |

110 Vibrio strains were isolated, at various times of the year, from samples of sea-water supply, breeding-tank water and discarded fish used as food at the breeding stations. From the results obtained by the biochemical and cultural tests, it was possible to identify most of the isolated strains as Vibrio anguillarum . Strains with intermediate characteristics, above-all positive saccharose, proved to be numerous. The authors discuss the occurrence, in particular environments such as those being studied, of atypical or intermediate vibrio strains which are difficult to classify. |

Assessment of egg quality at early embryonic stages may be useful predictive criterion to evaluate the potential mass juvenile production in red porgy Pagrus pagrus. The objective of the present study is to describe in detail the embryonic developmental stages in the red porgy and the time taken by larvae to hatch at three incubation temperatures. Fertilized eggs obtained from natural spawnings were incubated at 15, 20 and 25°C. Photomicrographs of all the embryonic stages were taken at the three temperatures. Cell divisions after fertilization and organ appearance during the embryonic development were identified. The sequence in cellular divisions and appearance of sensory and motor organs were the same for the three temperatures, although the higher the... |

The aim of this work was to analyze hydrological condition variations in Cienfuegos’ Bay in 2011 and its possible influence in life cycle and distribution of the green mussel Perna viridis. The hydrological parameters in the bay are described according to the campaigns performed in February, May and November. Samples from two levels (surface and bottom) were taken, in order to get water temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen. The results show the climatic seasonality influence (dry and rain) both in spatial as well as in vertical distribution of the observed parameters. The mean concentrations of the analyzed hydrological markers were in agreement with the NC 25: 1999 requirements of good quality water for fishing use. The observed hydrological... |

The appearance, ossification and growth of cartilaginous structures of the mouth in early larval stages of laboratory reared red porgy Pagrus pagrus, were examined. At the time of mouth opening, red porgy larvae are equipped with the fundamental components of the oral cavity to allow the sucking motion for acquiring food. During the initial feeding stage, from day 5 after hatching (AH) to day 7 AH, the hyoid and lower branchial archs were completed, and the head length and other structural elements, like the ceratohyal-epihyal cartilage, increased rapidly. These events intensified sucking mechanisms by increasing the amount of ingested rotifers. After day 13 AH, the presence of the bony premaxilla and angular, the ossification of the Meckels cartilage and... |

Intensive culture of teleost fish introduces changes over the environmental conditions found in their spawning grounds, leading to reproductive dysfunctions. The manipulation of these parameters (photoperiod, temperature) represents a common technique to alter the reproductive rhythms and enhance the spawnings in terms of quality and quantity. Nevertheless, for each species some modifications or adjustments have to be done according to their reproductive strategies. The advantages of manipulating those parameters are primarily to schedule the spawning for a desired period of time and to obtain good quality and quantity eggs. Many factors such as tank dimension, light intensity, nutritional status and husbandry of broodfish and minimum stress level have... |

Spontaneous spawning of red porgy was achieved in captivity by using photoperiod and temperature control systems along the year. During a four-month reproduction period females released in average about 0.2 times their own body weight in oocytes with an energy content of 5.71 J mg-1 wet weight. A total of 28.8 x 106 eggs and approximately 200 g of viable eggs (wet weight) per female kg were obtained. The eggs and larvae quality in terms of hatching and larval survival rates experienced a significant variation during the spawning season ranging between 0%-92% and 0.3%-33.2% respectively. Comments in reference to the probable causes of these variations and the need of carrying on with this line of research are presented. |

Mariculture in Argentina has expanded over the last years. Flounders of the Paralichtydae family are a very important fishery resource due to their abundance, meat quality, and high market price. The first mass production of juveniles of Paralichthys orbignyanus in captivity was successfully performed in 2002 at the Estación Experimental de Maricultura (EEM), Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), Mar del Plata. Moreover, it has got potential as a species for cultivation, due to its behaviour in captivity, good growth, survival and feed conversion rates. In this study, the parameters that affect this flounder cultivation under controlled conditions and in closed recirculating seawater system, are presented. Temperature, pH, and... |
