In our time emerged the idea of a major environmental degradation, at both local and global scales, in the face of the recurrent human pollution. Consequently in the sake of a sustainable humanity development, of the ethic and of the ecology, the protection and the monitoring of our environment have become a major stake. Many scientific and technical tools contributed to improve the environmental knowledge, as helped remote and in situ observations, and forecast modeling. In situ environmental sensor systems have been designed to be increasingly sustainable even in a hostile environment such as the deep ocean. In a similar way, the infrastructures hosting those sensors are now thought and built to be permanent. In marine sciences these considerations gave... |

A special workshop has been held in Accra, Ghana from 14-18 April 2003 as part of the ODINAFRICAII program for ocean data management. This report describes the content and accomplishments of that special workshop. The workshop programme was based on the IOC OceanTeacher capacity building tool - an extensive collation of documents on marine data, formats, software, program and data management procedures, manuals, protocols, and associated tutorials. A set of intersessional assignments was formulated that included a wide range of specific dataset measures and products that will be assigned regularly through the recently established ODINAFRICA.net communication network. |

The Marine Environmental Data Information Referral Catalogue (MEDI) is a directory system for datasets, data catalogues and data inventories developed by IODE. The IODE Steering Group for MEDI was established to support the MEDI system. During its Third Session the Steering Group discussed the implementation of a marine community profile of the ISO 19115 metadata standard. The marine community profile developed by the Australian Ocean Data Centre Joint Facility will be disseminated for comment through a new IODE metadata discussion list. The Steering Group will review comments received and recommend a marine profile for MEDI. The Steering Group agreed that governance of vocabularies used by MEDI should be responsibility of the MarineXML group. The Steering... |
