Economic impact analysis of marker-assisted breeding for resistance to pests and post harvest deterioration in cassava AgEcon

Marker-assisted breeding could have a major impact in relieving productivity constraints that cannot as easily or rapidly be relieved by conventional breeding alone. This paper estimates the benefits of using marker-assisted breeding, as compared to conventional breeding alone, in developing cassava varieties resistant to cassava mosaic disease, green mite, whitefly and post-harvest physiological deterioration in Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda. Marker-assisted breeding is estimated to save at least four years in the breeding cycle for varieties resistant to the pests and to result in incremental net benefits over 25 years in the range of $34 to $800 million depending on the country, the particular constraint and various assumptions. Microsatellite molecular marker-assisted gene pyramiding for resistance to Asian soybean rust (ASR) Agronomy

The present study aimed at pyramiding ASR-resistance genes through microsatellite (SSR) marker-assisted selection (MAS) and demonstrating the pyramiding steps. To obtain the first generation of gene pyramiding, crosses were made between introduced plants (PI’s), which have the genes Rpp1, Rpp2, Rpp3, Rpp4, and Rpp5. F1 plants from the initial crosses were intercrossed to obtain plants with the four resistance genes (second pyramiding generation). Plants selected from this second generation were again intercrossed (third pyramiding generation) to increase the number of pyramided genes. For MAS, we used informative SSR markers in each cross. SSR markers were considered informative when the source resistance allele containing the target gene could be followed...

ABSTRACT Grain shape in rice is a key determinant of grain appearance, yield and market value, and thus has been widely studied. Rice mutant lines with long-grain phenotypes were previously isolated from an M2 population derived from mutagenized mature pollen grains that were treated with gamma-ray irradiation for a cultivar Ma85. To understand the genetic basis underlying the long-grain trait, two mutant lines, JF171 and JF178, were crossed with the short-grain parents JF222 and Samba, generating three F2 populations.
