In various European countries, organic farming acts as a driving factor for small and medium enterprises, cooperations of food businesses or territorial development. Examples for regional development initiatives are ‘Biovallée de la Drôme’ in France, ‘Biodistretti’ in Italy or the ‘Bio-Regionen’ in Austria. Regional development initiatives aspire to create ‘model regions’ for sustainable development in agriculture and in a wider perspective. While the overall objective is similar for all approaches, the outcomes differ between enterprises and regions. However, the regional embeddednes plays always a strategic role.
