Revision of Coelogyne section Moniliformes (Orchidaceae) based on morphology, plastid and nrDNA ITS sequences Naturalis
Gravendeel, B.; Vogel, E.F. de.
Section Moniliformes Carr of the orchid genus Coelogyne is revised using morphological and molecular data. Twelve species are recognised, including two new ones (C. chanii and C. renae). and a dubious one (C. crassiloba). A combined analysis of morphological characters, and sequences of the nrDNA ITS region, matK gene, trnT-trnL intergenic spacer, trnL intron and trnL-trnF intergenic spacer supports the monophyly of the section as here recognised. Persistence of the rhizome scales, shape of the margin of the leaves, inflorescence type, shape of the rachis, its nodes and pedicel scars, indument of the floral bracts, lip size and depth of the sinus of the lateral lobes of the hypochile seem to be phylogenetically informative characters. Shape of the leaf...

Molecular phylogeny of Dioscorea (Dioscoreaceae) in East and Southeast Asia Naturalis
Hsu, K.-M.; Tsai, J.-L.; Chen, M.-Y.; Ku, H.-M.; Liu, S.-C..
The phylogenetic relationships of Dioscorea, including sections Botryosicyos, Combilium, Enantiophyllum, Lasiophyton, Opsophyton, Shannicorea and Stenophora, are reconstructed with chloroplast trnL-F, matK, rbcL and atpB-rbcL sequence data, covering a total of 72 accessions including 48 ingroup species and five outgroup species from East and Southeast Asia. The seven Asian sections do reflect the genetic relationships among the species that they include. In summary, D. sect. Combilium and sect. Shannicorea are recognized as closely related sections with moderate support. The results also support Burkills treatment of subsect. Euopsophyton (D. bulbifera) as sect. Opsophyton and subsect. Macrourae (D. sansibarensis) as sect. Macroura. In addition, there is a...

A Plastid Gene Phylogeny of the Yam Genus, Dioscorea: Roots, Fruits and Madagascar Naturalis
Wilkin, P.; Schols, P.; Chase, M.; Chayamarit, K.; Furness, C.; Huysmans, S.; Rakotonasolo, F.; Smets, E.; Thapyai, C..
Following recent phylogenetic studies of the families and genera of Dioscoreales, the identification of monophyletic infrageneric taxa in the pantropical genus Dioscorea is a priority. A phylogenetic analysis based on sequence data from the plastid genes rbcL and matK is presented, using 67 species of Dioscorea and covering all the main Old World and selected New World lineages. The analysis used 14 outgroup taxa, including Trichopus Gaertn., Tacca J.R. & G. Forster, Stenomeris Planch., Burmannia L. and Thismia Griff. The main findings are: a) that a clade of rhizomatous taxa is sister to the rest of Dioscorea; b) the main Old World groups (such as the right-twining D. sect. Enantiophyllum) are monophyletic and c) there are two distinct lineages among...

Revision of Coelogyne section Verrucosae (Orchidaceae): a new sectional delimitation based on morphological and molecular evidence Naturalis
Sierra, S.E.C.; Gravendeel, B.; Vogel, E.F. de.
Section Verrucosae Pfitzer & Kraenzl. of the genus Coelogyne Lindl. is revised using morphological and molecular data. Eight species are recognized, including two new ones ( C. marthae and C. verrucosa). One name is reduced to synonymy. Four species formerly included by several authors in sect. Verrucosae (C. brachyptera, C. papillosa, C. parishii and C. virescens) are excluded. A total evidence analysis of morphological characters and ITS and matK sequence data supports the monophyly of the section as here recognized. Coelogyne virescens (sect. Brachypterae) is identified as nearest neighbour to the species of sect. Verrucosae. The number of sterile bracts on the rhachis and the shape of the ornamentation on the epichile appear to be phylogenetically...
