Atributos demográficos y biología reproductiva de Coryphantha cornifera y Stenocactus anfractuosus con fines de conservación. Colegio de Postgraduados

Se estudió la distribución geográfica, asociación, densidad, supervivencia in situ y factores de riesgo para las poblaciones de Coryphantha cornifera y Stenocactus anfractuosus. La búsqueda de las especies se hizo mediante recorridos de campo en los estados de México, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Puebla y Querétaro. En los sitios donde se encontraron estas especies, se registraron las coordenadas geográficas y altitud. Se establecieron parcelas de 400 m2 donde se marcaron todos los individuos presentes; para cada uno se obtuvieron datos morfométricos y número de costillas o tubérculos; también se registró la ocupación del hábitat, el estado fenológico y la condición sanitaria. Mating system in a neotropical tree species, Senna multijuga (Fabaceae) Genet. Mol. Biol.

Senna multijuga is a pioneer tropical tree species that occurs mainly in the Brazilian Atlantic forest. We investigated the mating system of two populations of S. multijuga, one located in a reserve area (RD1) and the other (RD2) about 15 km away. The mating system parameters were estimated using the mixed mating model (software MLTR). The two populations had significantly different outcrossing rates, with population RD2 having a high rate (t m = 0.838) and population RD1, a lower rate (t m = 0.540). The values of t s were different between the two populations and also lower than those of t m. An evolutionary approach to megapode mating systems Naturalis

An evolutionary understanding of the complex mating systems of megapodes has been impaired by a historical and simplistic classification system that assumed all species to be monogamous. This approach has been challenged by behavioural ecology theories that emphasize the primacy of the individual attempt to maximize its own fitness. From this point of view the remarkable incubation techniques and the recently described behaviours of some clearly promiscuous species can be more clearly understood. In particular, the influence of the type of incubation-heat source on the mating system is paramount.

What we don’t know about megapodes Naturalis

While the growth in megapode studies has been extraordinary, much remains to be done. Further work is especially crucial if the many conservation projects that are planned and underway are to be based on a sound and reliable base of understanding. Thus, the ten projects proposed here are not directly conservation-orientated. Rather, they are aimed at elucidating aspects and issues that are needed for a more complete understanding of these remarkable birds. In particular, a plea is made for high quality natural history and for cultural sensitivity and awareness.

Behavioral ecology of Heteragrion consors Hagen (Odonata: Megapodagrionidae): a shade-seek Atlantic forest damselfly. The intensity of the inter and intra-sexual selection can affect male behavioral traits as territorial fidelity and aggressiveness allowing the existence of different strategies. However, its differential success could be affected by environmental - as the diel variation in temperature - and physiological constrains - as the variation in thermoregulatory abilities. In this context, we present a behavioral analysis of Heteragrion consors (Zygoptera, Megapodagrionidae) trying to characterize its mating system, diel activity pattern, temporal budget, territoriality and reproductive biology. This multiplicity has been translated into several terminological concepts and contexts, which have facilitated further research. On the other hand, the use of terms that address the reproduction of flowering plants has been shown to be inconsistent in the literature, complicating communication among specialists.
