Classification of Banana Fruit Maturity using zNose 111
P, Rajkumar; C, Dr. Indu Rani; N, Dr.Wang; G.S.V, Dr. Raghavan.
A study was undertaken to classify the banana fruits based on their ripening/maturity by using zNose flavour detection technique. The quality parameters of banana fruits viz., respiratory quotient (RQ), total soluble solids (TSS), moisture content and firmness at each ripening/maturity stage were determined and the results were correlated with zNose flavour data. The principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify the ripening/maturity stages of banana fruits and also to test the variability of the observed data. By using multiple linear regression (MLR), models were established to predict the fruit quality parameters. The coefficient of determination (r2) corresponding to the predicted respiratory quotient, total soluble solids, moisture content...

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for Non-Destructive Prediction of Maturity and Eating Quality of ‘Carabao’ Mango (Mangifera indica L.) Fruit 111
Polinar, Yvonne Q.; Yaptenco, Kevin Fernandez; Peralta, Engelbert K.; Agravante, Josephine U..
Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was assessed in predicting maturity and eating quality of ‘Carabao’ mango fruit. A total of 1,200 fruits were harvested at the green stage at four different harvest dates [100, 110, 120 and 125 days after flower induction (DAFI)]. Fruits were scanned at the green and table-ripe stage (TRS) using NIR reflectance spectroscopy. The fruits were then measured destructively for the determination of dry matter (DM) content at the green stage, total soluble solids (TSS) and sensory attributes at the TRS. The best calibration models were achieved using partial least square regression (PLSR) analysis for predicting DM, TSS and maturity in the short wavelength region of 700 - 990 nm at 2-nm increment. Principal component...

Analysis of the management of the sardine crisis Sardinella aurita in Venezuela and commentary on fishing gears and statistics 50
Gómez Gaspar,Alfredo.
ABSTRACT The sardine Sardinella aurita, fished since 1927, is Venezuela's most significant fishery resource. The national catch reached a record high of 200,000 tons in 2004 but diminished nationally by 50% in 2005 and by 90% on Margarita Island, marking the beginning of a crisis in sardine fishing. Based on indicators of overexploitation, the fishing authority increased the minimum size required for capture and prohibited fishing for three months in 2013. The validity of these measures is studied here. A reduction in size may indicate intensive exploitation, and thus, the records of 28,217 sardines measured between 2002 and 2016 in the southeast region of Margarita Island were examined. Prior to the crisis, in 2003 and 2004, the average size was 195.48...

Physiologic sexual maturity of the fiddler crab Uca rapax (Smith, 1870) (Crustacea, Ocypodidae) from two mangroves in Ubatuba, Brazil 52
Castiglioni,Daniela da Silva; Negreiros-Fransozo,Maria Lucia.
The gonad development of Uca rapax was studied to achieve the size at onset of its sexual maturity. Crabs were sampled from April/2001 to March/2002 in the Itamambuca and Ubatumirim mangroves in Ubatuba, São Paulo, Brazil. The specimens were grouped in 10 size classes. Juveniles and adult crabs frequencies were assessed for each class. The size of carapace width in which 50% of males and females were considered mature was 14.8 and 12.1 mm (Itamambuca) and 13.6 and 11.4 mm (Ubatumirim), respectively for males and females. Males matured at higher sizes than females, probably due to a major investment in their somatic growth, while females spend their energy in the reproductive process, saving energy for eggs' production.

Optimization of Malaxation Process using Major Aroma Compounds in Virgin Olive Oil 52
Cevik,Serife; Ozkan,Gulcan; Kıralan,Mustafa.
ABSTRACT Optimization of major aroma compounds in olive oils produced from fruits at three maturity stages wasstudied. A central composite design was used for the optimization of malaxation conditions of temperature and times, each at five levels with 13 runs including five central points. The responses of interest were trans-2-hexenal and hexanal, which were investigated and their contents were optimized. A full quadratic second order regression model including the linear, quadratic, and two factor interaction effects was proposed to explain the variation in the contents of target compounds depending on the malaxation conditions. Adequacies of models were evaluated by checking regression coefficients for each model. Models were found to work with high...

Relationship between fruit maturation stage and physiological quality of physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) seeds 64
Silva,Laércio Junio da; Dias,Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos; Milagres,Carla do Carmo; Dias,Luiz Antônio dos Santos.
The physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) has great potential for use in biodiesel production due to the high oil content of its seeds. Production of high quality seeds depends upon the appropriate time of harvest. A field experiment was carried out to monitor the maturation process of physic nut seeds and to establish the ideal harvest time of the seeds based on external fruit color. Fruits were collected at different maturation stages based on the external color: green, yellow-green, yellow, yellow-brown and brown. Seeds were extracted manually and, after natural drying, were submitted to the following tests and determinations: moisture content and dry matter, germination, first count seedling emergence, seedling growth, accelerated aging, electrical...

Determination of harvest maturity of D'Agen plums using the chlorophyll absorbance index 118
Infante,Rodrigo; Rubio,Pía; Contador,Loreto; Noferini,Massimo; Costa,Guglielmo.
The objective determination of the optimal harvest date for plums intended either for industrial processing or for consumption as fresh fruit is a fundamental concern of the fruit industry. A portable visible/near infrared (Vis/NIR) spectroscopic device was used to sort D'Agen plums harvested around the traditional commercial harvest date. The chlorophyll absorbance index was found to be capable of segregating plums into classes of maturity according to various concentrations of soluble solids and fruit compression strenght values. Fruits with a chlorophyll absorbance index value of less than 1.59 showed no differences in flesh firmness. Plums harvested with chlorophyll absorbance index values of 1.20-1.29 had a fruit compression strenght of 1.25 N and a...

Changes in enzymes, phenolic compounds, tannins, and vitamin C in various stages of jambolan (Syzygium cumini Lamark) development 116
Brandão,Taís Silva de Oliveira; Sena,Amanda Reges de; Teshima,Elisa; David,Jorge Maurício; Assis,Sandra Aparecida.
The physiological state of a fruit is closely related to ripening and climatic conditions during the growing period when the fruit undergo changes in color, texture, and flavor. The ripening of the fruit can involve a complex series of biochemical reactions with alteration in enzymes activities, phenols, tannins, and ascorbic acid. The activity of enzymes (carboximethylcellulase, polygalacturonase, and pectinlyase), the total concentration of phenolic compounds, condensed tannins, and vitamin C in five stages of maturation were studied. Significant changes were observed between the maturity stages. The phenolic compounds were higher at green stage (705.01 ± 7.41); tannins were higher at green/purple stage (699.45 ± 0.22). The results showed that the...

Identification of QTLs for pod and kernel traits in cultivated peanut by bulked segregant analysis 69
Gomez Selvaraj,Michael; Narayana,Manivannan; Schubert,A. Michael; Ayers,Jamie L; Baring,Michael R; Burow,Mark D.
Bulked segregant analysis was used to identify simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers associated with pod and kernel traits in cultivated peanut, to permit rapid selection of superior quality genotypes in the breeding program. SSR markers linked to pod and kernel traits were identified in two DNA pools (high and low), which were established using selected F2:6 recombinant individuals resulting from a cultivated cross between a runner (Tamrun OL01) and a Spanish (BSS 56) peanut. To identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for pod and kernel-related traits, parents were screened initially with 112 SSR primer pairs. The survey revealed 8.9% polymorphism between parents. Of ten SSR primer pairs distinguishing the parents, five (PM375, PM36, PM45, pPGPseq8D9, and...

Quantitative trait loci mapping of pubescence density and flowering time of insect-resistant soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) 74
Komatsu,Kunihiko; Okuda,Shiori; Takahashi,Masakazu; Matsunaga,Ryoichi; Nakazawa,Yoshinori.
Analysis of antibiosis resistance to common cutworm (Spodoptera litura Fabricius) in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) has progressed significantly, but the immediate cause remains unknown. We performed quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis of pubescence density and plant development stage because these factors are assumed to be the immediate cause of resistance to cutworm. The QTLs for pubescence appeared to be identical to the previously detected the Pd1 and Ps loci controlling pubescence density. We found no candidate loci for flowering time QTLs, although one could be identical to the gene governing the long-juvenile trait or to the E6 loci controlling maturity. None of the QTLs overlapped with the QTLs for antibiosis resistance.

Bilan synthétique des paramètres biologiques et halieutiques collectés sur les espèces récifales pêchées illégalement au sein de la Réserve Naturelle Marine de La Réunion 5
Roos, David; Rungassamy, Tévamie; Evano, Hugues; Varenne, Fanchon; Fry, Ludivine; Chapat, Melodie; Gallion, Nicolas; Huet, Jerome.
This study summarizes the results of the processing and analysis of data from illegal fisheries, apprehended by the eco-guards of the Marine Natural Reserve of Reunion from 2015 to 2017 (including the first dataset from 2018). These information are valued in terms of fisheries and bioecological knowledge for reef fish species. Thus, both diversity and abundance indices, size structures, growth parameters, stock characterization, can be apprehended from the biological parameters collected on all the species caught because they often do not exist : the sizes, weights, sexes, maturities, scales, otoliths, stomach contents as well as genetic and isotopic samples. These indices would contribute to a better diagnosis of the status and the sensitivity of stocks...

Fécondités individuelle et par recrue du homard européen Homarus gammarus (L.) des cotes françaises 5
Latrouite, Daniel; Morizur, Yvon; Raguenes, Gerard.
Several relationships between the fecundity and the weight or the size of females have been studied for three different (based on "eye-index") stages of incubation. The relationship between the average weight of eggs at the beginning of incubation and the size of the females shows that the egg size varies according to the female's size. Loss of eggs during incubation has been studied ; the average loss between the two extreme stages of incubation is around 27%. This is a lowered value of what accurs during the whole incubation period. Egg losses are greater for small females than for big females. The annual frequency of spawning and size at first maturity have been determined in for differents fishing effort than by the commercial size.

Estimating the productivity of Atlantic bluefin tuna from validated scientific data 5
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Kell, Laurence; Restrepo, Victor.
Estimating the productivity of an exploited marine species is not an easy or a trivial task. In the case of Atlantic bluefin tuna, the productivity can hardly be estimated from the natural mortality rates or the stock recruitment relationships because the former have never been estimated for this species from scientific data, but only “guesstimated”, while the latter remain highly uncertain for both the eastern stock (BFTE) and the western stock (BFTW). To get a better idea of bluefin tuna productivity, we thus applied the approach by Jennings et al. (1998) who proposed a surrogate of r, r’, named the potential rate of population increase. We compared this parameter and age-at-maturity (and to some extent the individual growth curves) of 25 species...
