Effect of skilled and unskilled training on nerve regeneration and functional recovery BJMBR

The most disabling aspect of human peripheral nerve injuries, the majority of which affect the upper limbs, is the loss of skilled hand movements. Activity-induced morphological and electrophysiological remodeling of the neuromuscular junction has been shown to influence nerve repair and functional recovery. In the current study, we determined the effects of two different treatments on the functional and morphological recovery after median and ulnar nerve injury. The rat models currently employed for studies of nerve regeneration present distinct disadvantages. We propose a new technique of stretch-induced nerve injury, used here to evaluate the influence of gabapentin (GBP) on nerve regeneration. Male Wistar rats (300 g; n=36) underwent surgery and exposure of the median nerve in the right forelimbs, either with or without nerve injury. The late components which originate from thinner fibers are not detected. This explains why a normal sensory action potential (SAP) may be recorded in patients with peripheral neuropathies and sensory loss. Anomalous Branching Pattern of Lateral Cord of Brachial Plexus International Journal of Morphology

During routine dissection, an unusual formation of median nerve was detected in the right upper limb of a 55 year old male cadaver. The median nerve had an additional contribution from lateral cord. The two branches of the lateral cord designated as upper and the lower branches were observed at different levels. The upper branch was in close contact with the third part of the axillary artery and it crossed the vessel anteriorly to unite with a branch of the medial cord to form the median nerve. Incidence of Unusual Formation of the Median Nerve in Thai-Northeast Embalmed Cadavers International Journal of Morphology

This study aimed to investigate the incidence of unusual formation of the median nerve in Thai cadavers. Two hundred and ninety-two upper limbs were dissected and observed. The results showed that 5 out of 292 (1.71 %) arms had unusual splitting of median nerve that supplied the flexor arm muscles. Concomitantly, the musculocutaneous nerve was absent. In 4 out of 5 variant arms (80 % or 1.37 % of total upper limbs), each median nerve was unusually formed by 3 roots; the first and second roots were from lateral cord and the third one from medial cord. The union of the second lateral and medial roots to become a median nerve distantly extended in the arm. Third Head of Biceps Brachii Muscle, Associated with Musculocutaneous and Median Nerve Bilateral Communication and with a Communicating Branch Between Median Nerve Roots International Journal of Morphology

Both biceps brachii muscle anatomical variations and the presence of communicating branches between the musculocutaneous nerve and the median nerve are common, and have clinical significance due to their connections and vulnerability. A case found during a routine dissection of the upper limb of a male cadaver is described, in which unilateral presence of a third head of the biceps brachii muscle coexists associated to a bilateral communication of the musculocutaneous nerve with the median nerve, and a unilateral communicating branch between the roots of median nerve. The morphological features and the prevalence of the case are presented, besides the discussion of its clinical significance.

Median Nerve Location Change Evaluated by Soft Cadaver Dissection According to the Forearm Movement International Journal of Morphology

The aim of this study was to examine the change in median nerve location according to forearm movement. Thirty fresh specimens from 15 adult Korean cadavers (10 males and five females; age range, 53­91 years) were examined. We measured the motor entry point according to normal and pronated positions of the forearm. The x and y coordinates of the first motor entry point (MEP) in the normal position were 1.6±0.6 cm and 2.8±1.3 cm, respectively. The depth of the MEP was 1.5±0.3 cm. The x and y coordinates of the second MEP were 1.3±0.3 cm and 4.7±1.7 cm, respectively. The depth of the MEP was 1.4±0.2 cm. Unusual Relation of the Median Nerve with the Accessory Head of the Biceps Brachii Muscle: An Original Case Report International Journal of Morphology

During the laboratory dissection of the brachial region and the arm, an abnormal relation of median nerve with the accessory head of biceps brachii muscle has been observed unilaterally on the right upper limb of a male cadaver. Whereas the short and long heads have their normal origin, additional-excess third head originated from the anteromedial surface of the superior part of the humerus. Some fibers of this accessory head on the medial side arise from the deep fascia surrounding the brachialis muscle. Transligamentous variant of the recurrent motor branch is having a higher risk of getting damage during both endoscopic and open carpal tunnel releases. The incidence of the transligamentous variant is about 7% to 80% world wide. This wide variation of the incidence could be due to the failure of identification of the distal edge of the flexor retinaculum from the obliquely oriented fascia that runs from the distal edge.
