Despite the high prevalence of sleep disorders, many healthcare professionals and lay people have little knowledge of Sleep Medicine. Mindful of such a reality, in 2001 the Sleep Institute of the Associação Fundo de Incentivo à Psicofarmacologia launched a campaign to increase Sleep Medicine awareness. Media features, exhibitions, inserts, and classes were used to reach 2,000,000 people and 55,000 healthcare professionals during the period from 2001 to 2004. To evaluate this program, we compared data for polysomnography referrals to the Institute in 2000 and in 2004. A total of 8805 referrals were evaluated (2000: 2164; 2004: 6641). Over the 4 years of the program, the number of beds increased by 43%; more women were referred (31 vs 37%; P < 0.001),... |

The aim of this study was to produce pictures of the knees from an embalmed cadaver and another fresh cadaver with various levels of dissection, flexion, and rotation, consequently to aid medical students and doctors in studying knee anatomy. In this study, we intended to improve the accessibility of the numerous knee photographs, by entering them into our own made browsing software. This software could be downloaded for free from the website (anatomy.co.kr). In the software, a displayed array consisted of four pictures: a knee at three different depths of dissection and the same knee in flexed state. The knee could be rotated interactively at every 5° angle. Annotation of important knee structures could be seen at 90° angle intervals. With the browsing... |

With the advent of digital systems, the role of the microscope as an irreplaceable instrument in the practical teaching of histology has been called into question. In this study academic performance and student perception for three learning methods was compared: digital systems, microscopy, and microscopy plus digital systems, in the muscle tissue unit of the morphology course for first-year dentistry at the Universidad de los Andes, Santiago, Chile. Ninety-five students were divided into 3 groups: Group 1: individual optical microscopy, Group 2: digital systems (one projector per room), and Group 3: microscopy plus digital systems. All participants observed the same striate muscle, cardiac striated muscle, and smooth muscle mounts. Their diagnostic... |

In 2003, the UFG Faculty of Medicine, to revamp its educational project, reduced the hourly load of some subjects, among them those of anatomy, which in general leads to eliminate the practice of dissection. This practice is essential for the basic training of students, being then used in other sciences such as pathology. The objective of this study was to compare and link data between groups that made or did not make dissection after the anatomy course. Questionnaires were issued to 86 medical students from the UFG Faculty of Medicine, and from these, 10 made dissection and 76 did not. Analyzing the answers, it was found that both groups recognize the importance of this practice for the knowledge of the anatomy discipline and for future disciplines or... |

This study evaluated the impact of printed matter, video, and multimedia on the learning/teaching process in Tropical Diseases. Eighty-four of 90 fourth-year medical students at Botucatu School of Medicine of UNESP were evaluated. The students received a kit containing a textbook, a video, and a CD-ROM on the Clinical Study of Tetanus to prepare a seminar on the subject. They were then asked to complete a questionnaire, which led to the following conclusions: 67.86% read the textbook, 91.66% watched the video, and 77.38% explored the CD-ROM. These results were obtained observing the total number of students using each different media. When asked which of these media contributed most, the CD-ROM came out on top. The authors stress that this learning... |

This study evaluated the impact of multimedia in the information transfer of subjects specific to Tropical Diseases - Tetanus and Snake Envenoming. We evaluated the autonomous learning process of 76 fourth-year medical students at Botucatu School of Medicine of UNESP, using printed matter, video, and CD-ROM. The students were submitted to a specific test, which was repeated approximately one week later. They were divided into groups and received a kit containing a textbook, a video, and a CD-ROM. These materials were used for out-of-class study. Before the second test, the students gave a seminar, where they discussed and resolved their doubts with their professor. The results of the first test showed averagesbetween 4.27±1.41 and 6.41±1.61. The second... |
