| A survey on the use of host plants by treehoppers in plants in cerrado (savanna) vegetation at Moji-Guaçu (São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil) was made. Fifty-two species of treehoppers were recorded in association with 40 host plant species from October 1980 to February 1982. The families Araliaceae, Asteraceae, Leguminosae, Malpighiaceae, Myrtaceae and Nyctaginaceae were the most commonly used for oviposition. Byrsonima intermedia A. Juss. (Malpighiaceae) had the highest number of associated treehopper species (10 species). | The tribe Acutalini Fowler is redescribed as well as the genera Acutalis Fairmaire, Euritea Stål, and Thrasymedes Kirkaldy. | Seven new species of Paracentronodus Sakakibara, 1971 from Brazil, are described: P. canarinus sp. n. (type loc: Pedro Canário, Espírito Santo); P. cristatus sp. n. (type loc: Sinop, Mato Grosso); P. favisiae sp. n. (type loc: Encruzilhada, Bahia); P. nalalinae sp. n. (type loc: Caraça, Minas Gerais); P. nevesi sp. n. (type loc: Caruaru, Pernambuco); P. nigrostriatus sp. n. (type loc: Sinop, Mato Grosso), and P. urbanae sp. n. (type loc: Encruzilhada, Bahia). | An alternative proposition for the analysis of the diagnostic states of the pronotum in the Centrotinae and Membracinae (sensu Strümpel) is presented. In this analysis, a linear transformation series is proposed for this character, departing from the state found in Tolania Stal, 1858 changing to an intermediate state in Centrotinae, which is still treated as plesiomorphic when compared with the one found in Membracinae. The transformation series thus defined, clarifies the problems related to the monophyly of the Membracidae, which is herein supported by the state of pronotum previously used to define the Centrotinae. This later taxon is treated as paraphyletic. The monophyly of the Membracinae is unquestioned, but its sister group is still unknown.... |
