Eliciting Mental Models: a Comparison of Interview Procedures in the Context of Natural Resource Management Ecology and Society
Jones, Natalie A; University of Queensland; n.jones3@uq.edu.au; Ross, Helen; University of Queensland; Helen.Ross@uq.edu.au; Lynam, Timothy; Reflecting Society; tim.lynam@internode.on.net; Perez, Pascal; University of Wollongong; pascal@uow.edu.au.
The sustainable management of natural resources largely depends on people’s conceptions of environmental systems and how they function. The mental model construct provides an appropriate means to explore the cognitive dimension of people’s interactions with such systems. Mental models are cognitive representations of external reality that people use as the basis for acting with and within the world around them. We aimed to improve the application of the mental model construct to the field of natural resource management, with an emphasis on creek, i.e., stream, systems, by exploring how certain elicitation procedures may affect the mental models expressed. One of the initial hurdles that must be overcome is to work out how to effectively...

Portable flow board for storage of fruits and vegetables in mini-chambers with controlled atmosphere REA
Carmelo,Luis G. P.; Becaro,Aline A.; Ferreira,Marcos D.; Calbo,Adonai G..
ABSTRACT A portable flow board system was developed in the present study with the aim to facilitate lab-scale experiments of controlled atmosphere (CA) with fruits and vegetables. This sturdy flow board combines ease fabrication, low cost and gas economy. Its functionality is provided by manifolds and gas mixers. Each gaseous component is supplied by a gas cylinder through a differential valve of adjusted pressure control, generally at 6 kPa, and forced through 13 standardized restrictors coupled to each manifold output. Controlled atmospheres are then formed with one, two or three gases in 13 gas mixers affixed to the flow board base, which are further conducted through flexible tubes to storage mini-chambers that can also be used to study metabolic...

Methode de cartographie quantitative des ulves "offshore" ArchiMer
Merceron, Michel; Lunven, Michel.
Recent studies in the bays of Douarnenez and La Forêt-Fouesnant have proved that drifting stocks of « offshore » ulva exist between -2 and -20 meters depth. These stocks are nearly as important in weight as those located in the tidal zone, the only ones which are generally studied. It is likely that such « offshore » stocks also exist elsewhere in Brittany. The sampling method by discrete stations visited by divers, which has been used till now, is considered heavy and not precise enough. The new method involves a film camera set on a fish towed at a speed of a few knots. The fish is kept above the sea bottom at a chosen altitude controlled by a guiderope. The system is sturdy, autonomous, and can be easily transferred from one boat to another. The...

Microplastics in seafood: Benchmark protocol for their extraction and characterization ArchiMer

Pollution of the oceans by microplastics (<5 mm) represents a major environmental problem. To date, a limited number of studies have investigated the level of contamination of marine organisms collected in situ. For extraction and characterization of microplastics in biological samples, the crucial step is the identification of solvent(s) or chemical(s) that efficiently dissolve organic matter without degrading plastic polymers for their identification in a time and cost effective way. Most published papers, as well as OSPAR recommendations for the development of a common monitoring protocol for plastic particles in fish and shellfish at the European level, use protocols containing nitric acid to digest the biological tissues, despite reports of...

Towards a framework for the quantitative assessment of trawling impact on the seabed and benthic ecosystem ArchiMer
Rijnsdorp, A. D.; Bastardie, F.; Bolam, S. G.; Buhl-mortensen, L.; Eigaard, O. R.; Hamon, Katell; Hiddink, J. G.; Hintzen, N. T.; Ivanovic, A.; Kenny, A.; Laffargue, Pascal; Nielsen, J. R.; O'Neill, F. G.; Piet, G. J.; Polet, H.; Sala, A.; Smith, C.; Van Denderen, P. D.; Van Kooten, T.; Zengin, M..
A framework to assess the impact of mobile fishing gear on the seabed and benthic ecosystem is presented. The framework that can be used at regional and local scales provides indicators for both trawling pressure and ecological impact. It builds on high-resolution maps of trawling intensity and considers the physical effects of trawl gears on the seabed, on marine taxa, and on the functioning of the benthic ecosystem. Within the framework, a reductionist approach is applied that breaks down a fishing gear into its components, and a number of biological traits are chosen to determine either the vulnerability of the benthos to the impact of that gear component, or to provide a proxy for their ecological role. The approach considers gear elements, such as...

Quick and Inexpensive Method to Elaborate Tissue Punches Useful in Paraffin Tissue Microarrays International Journal of Morphology
García-Garza,Rubén; Rodríguez-Vidales,Edgar Paolo; Soto-Domínguez,Adolfo.
The tissue microarrays (TMAs) were first called multitumor block. In 1998 was described the current technique, that uses an innovated sampling method for more than 1,000 cylindrical paraffin tissue core biopsies in a single paraffin block. TMAs are now considered as a useful powerful research tool in Histology and Pathology laboratories, for the standardization of immunohistochemical techniques along with in situ hybridization. However, one disadvantage to its widespread use is the high cost of professional paraffin tissue punches, and the complexity in the development of homemade devices previously described in other studies. This study describes a step by step process to develop four different home-made devices made with materials that are common in...

A portable bio-amplifier for electric fish research: design and construction Neotropical Ichthyology
Wells,Jonathan K.; Crampton,William G. R..
The weak electric organ discharges (EODs) of gymnotiform knife fishes can be readily amplified with a wideband amplifier connected to submerged electrodes. The output from such an amplifier can then be monitored with audio speakers or digitized for subsequent analysis. Commercially available devices are expensive and usually require mains electrical power. Here we provide design notes and instructions for the construction and calibration of a cheap, portable, battery-powered, AC-coupled wideband bio-amplifier. This device was designed to allow electric fishes to be located in the field, and also to permit the relatively noise-free acquisition of EOD waveforms from specimens held in temporary captivity. This contribution is intended to encourage students of...

Quality Evaluation of Electronic Data Exchange System between Business and State Authorities AgEcon
Ulman, Milos; Havlicek, Zdenek.
The paper presents a new view of quality evaluation of a system of electronic data exchange between a business and government. A method for evaluation of the electronic data exchange system between a business and state authorities is presented in the paper. The method is called CBG (Communication between Business and Government). A goal of the CBG method is to evaluate the system of electronic data exchange between a business and state authorities, not only to evaluate applications such as an electronic data box or an electronic submission of tax. A pilot version of the CBG method provides a tool to evaluate and measure important attributes of the electronic data exchange system between businesses and state authorities

Compensation Method and Rational Standard of Arable Land Expropriation AgEcon
Xue, Mingchuan.
This paper discusses the problems in determining the compensational money of arable land expropriation by Income Capitalization Method and Market Comparative Method during the process of arable land expropriation. It also introduces the value composition of arable land in China. Taking Chongqing City as an example, the irrationality of compensation standard in current arable land expropriation is analyzed. Result shows that the Income Capitalization Method is rational in determining the compensational money, but the current compensation standard should be further improved.

Social Opportunities and Private Convenience of Choices at Farm Level: An Approach to the Links Between Farm Income and Sustainable GDP AgEcon
Idda, Lorenzo; Sini, Maria Paola.
This work proposes a method to identify and evaluate the links between the economic and environmental management of a farm, its income, and sustainable GDP. The approach is designed to link micro and macro economic aspects and is based on certain indicators, chosen from among those obtained from analysis of the farm accounts, suitable for representing socially desirable objectives. Three different types of farm accounts are employed. An MADM method of quantitative MCDM analysis was used to make a joint evaluation of various objective indicators in different types of farm management. The work only presents the most interesting result of the research, which was the method itself and does not include the results of a specific case study which was made. This...
