How temperate forests will respond to climate change is uncertain; projections range from severe decline to increased growth. We conducted field tests of sessile oak (Quercus petraea), a widespread keystone European forest tree species, including more than 150,000 trees sourced from 116 geographically diverse populations. The tests were planted on 23 field sites in six European countries, in order to expose them to a wide range of climates, including sites reflecting future warmer and drier climates. By assessing tree height and survival, our objectives were twofold: (1) to identify the source of differential population responses to climate (genetic differentiation due to past divergent climatic selection versus plastic responses to ongoing climate...

Evolution of morphological but not aggressiveness‐related traits following a major resistance breakdown in the poplar rust fungus, Melampsora larici‐populina ArchiMer
Maupetit, Agathe; Fabre, Bénédicte; Pétrowski, Jérémy; Andrieux, Axelle; De Mita, Stéphane; Frey, Pascal; Halkett, Fabien; Hayden, Katherine.
Crop varieties carrying qualitative resistance to targeted pathogens lead to strong selection pressure on parasites, often resulting in resistance breakdown. It is well known that qualitative resistance breakdowns modify pathogen population structure but few studies have analysed the consequences on their quantitative aggressiveness‐related traits. The aim of this study was to characterize the evolution of these traits following a resistance breakdown in the poplar rust fungus, Melampsora larici‐populina. We based our experiment on three temporal populations sampled just before the breakdown event, immediately after and four years later. First, we quantified phenotypic differences among populations for a set of aggressiveness traits on a universally...

Spatial statistical analysis and selection of genotypes in plant breeding PAB
Duarte,João Batista; Vencovsky,Roland.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of spatial statistical analysis in the selection of genotypes in a plant breeding program and, particularly, to demonstrate the benefits of the approach when experimental observations are not spatially independent. The basic material of this study was a yield trial of soybean lines, with five check varieties (of fixed effect) and 110 test lines (of random effects), in an augmented block design. The spatial analysis used a random field linear model (RFML), with a covariance function estimated from the residuals of the analysis considering independent errors. Results showed a residual autocorrelation of significant magnitude and extension (range), which allowed a better discrimination among genotypes...

Mehr-Ebenen-Modelle in der Analyse agrarstruktureller Entwicklungen – Methodik und Implikationen AgEcon
Margarian, Anne.
Until now empirical analyses have not succeeded in the determination of a general upon agreed bunch of the most important driving forces of structural change in agriculture beyond the level of the national economy. It will be argued that the sometimes contradictory results of different studies are caused by the endogenous dynamics of structural change as well as by mixing up different levels of causality. The influence of single causes, therefore, is not necessarily characterised by linearity, symmetry and independence of other causes, of the location or of time. Multi-level-models are being presented as a method with the capability to cope with these problems by modelling hierarchical relations and dynamics in time simultaneously. The flexibility of the...

Selection index based on phenotypic and genotypic values predicted by REML/BLUP in Papaya Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Moreira,Sarah Ola; Kuhlcamp,Karin Tesch; Barros,Fabíola Lacerda de Souza; Zucoloto,Moises; Godinho,Tiago de Oliveira.
Abstract Selection of superior genotypes based on the simultaneous responses to different characteristics is a fundamental strategy in plant breeding. This study aimed to compare the efficiency of four selection index constructed using phenotypic and genotypic values in a segregating population of the cultivar Rubi Incaper 511. Eight morpho-agronomic variates and the severity of black-spot and phoma-spot were evaluated under field conditions. The classical selection index were calculated based on non-standardized phenotypic means (NSM), standardized means (SM), and genotypic values predicted by REML/BLUP (GVP), using predetermined economic weights. Additionally, the rank sum (RS) was obtained on the basis of the classification of individuals in these...

Periodic assessment of the genetic progress made in recurrent selection programs is essential for assessing the evolution of the programs and identifying the main factors that have contributed to this progress. This study aimed to estimate genetic progress in grain yield, plant height and days-to-flowering achieved in the CNA6 population of upland rice (Oryza sativa L.), after four cycles of recurrent selection; and evaluate the genetic potential of this population to generate superior inbred lines after each selection cycle. The experimental data were obtained from progeny yield trials of each recurrent selection cycle. These trials were carried out in two or three locations per cycle, and consisted of S0:2 progenies and at least three checks. Federer’s...

Simulation of mixed models in augmented block design Scientia Agricola
Santos,Aladir Horacio; Bearzoti,Eduardo; Ferreira,Daniel Furtado; Silva Filho,João Luís da.
The augmented block design is widely used in breeding programs, with non-replicated treatments generally being selection units, and replicated treatments being standard cultivars. Originally, an intrablock analysis (fixed model) was proposed. Although non-replicated treatments and/or blocks can be considered of random nature, mixed linear models could be used instead. This work evaluated such an approach, using computer simulation. Populations consisted of sets of randomly generated inbred lines. Molecular marker data were also simulated to allow the estimation of the genetic covariance matrix. Different conditions were considered, varying heritability and the coefficient b of Smith of soil heterogeneity. For each condition 100 simulations were performed,...

Genetic progress, adaptability and stability of maize cultivars for value of cultivation and use trials Agronomy
Uate, Joaquim Vicente; Nunvuga, Joel Jorge; Silva, Carlos Pereira da; Guimarães, Lauro Jose Moreira; Pinho, Renzo Garcia Von; Balestre, Marcio.
Maize breeding programs conduct multi-environment trials every year to assess the performance of new cultivars in pre-releasing tests. The data are combined across sites and seasons to perform a joint analysis in order to obtain information that will help breeders to select the best cultivars for different environments. Beyond this, it is essential to understand the different factors that can hamper the selection and genetic progress (i.e., genetic variability, selection intensity and genotype-by-environment interactions). In this study, the genetic progress (GP) was estimated and the adaptability and stability of 81 maize genotypes were evaluated in a series of trials for the value of cultivation and use (VCU) between the 2010/11 and 2014/15 growing...

Identification of QTL underlying agronomic, morphological and physiological traits in barley under rainfed conditions using SNP markers Agronomy
Arriagada, Osvin; Mora, Freddy; Quitral, Yerko; Del Pozo, Alejandro.
Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is considered a good genetic model for evaluating mechanisms of drought tolerance, and it is the most important threat to crop production worldwide. This study aimed to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with agronomic, morphological and physiological traits in a population of 137 recombinant chromosome substitution lines (RCSL) of barley, which were evaluated under rainfed conditions, in Cauquenes, southern Chile (35°58’ S, 72°17’ W). The annual precipitation was 299 mm during the growing season. Fifty-two significant QTLs were detected for the studied traits, which explained between 5% and 13.8% of the phenotypic variation. A genomic region on chromosome 1H (that comprises SNPs 2711-234 and 1923-265)...

Longitudinal studies aimed at evaluating patients clinical response to specific therapeutic treatments are frequently summarized in incomplete datasets due to missing data. Multivariate statistical procedures use only complete cases, deleting any case with missing data. MI and MIANALYZE procedures of the SAS software perform multiple imputations based on the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to replace each missing value with a plausible value and to evaluate the efficiency of such missing data treatment. The objective of this work was to compare the evaluation of differences in the increase of serum TNF concentrations depending on the 308 TNF promoter genotype of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients receiving anti-TNF therapy with and without multiple...
