IN SITU MONITORING OF A CONTROLLED RELEASE OF FERTILIZERS IN LETTUCE CROP REA
Souza,Claudinei F.; Faez,Roselena; Bacalhau,Fabiana B.; Bacarin,Murilo F.; Pereira,Tamires S..
ABSTRACT: Agriculture has sought ways to increase food production to meet global demands, intensifying dependence on natural resources. An alternative for intensive production has relied on the use of “smart” fertilizers that release nutrients in a controlled manner. Biodegradable polymers containing fertilizers has presented economic and environmental advantages when applied to the soil, as they release water and nutrients gradually to the environment without leaving residues. The objective of this study was to monitor the behavior of chitosan-clay hybrid microspheres, used as potassium nitrate soil ferti-releaser in lettuce cultivation. The experiment consisted of two treatments: (i) application of ferti-releasing chitosan-clay microspheres and (ii) use...

Influence of water on the short and long term mechanical behaviour of polyamide 6 (nylon) fibres and yarns ArchiMer
Humeau, Corentin; Davies, Peter; Le Gac, Pierre Yves; Jacquemin, Frédéric.
Polyamide fibres are known to be sensitive to water, and this has limited their marine applications. However, their low stiffness and high strength could be attractive for shallow water mooring line ropes, particularly for floating wind turbines. Such applications require the influence of water on mechanical behaviour to be fully understood, and this paper presents results describing how water affects static and creep response of polyamide 6 fibre yarns. First, the effect of water on fibre Tg is quantified, then tensile behaviour is examined. Finally, a model based on Schapery’s non-linear creep analysis is identified for different humidity conditions. The results show that while moisture has a small effect on short-term tensile behaviour, long term...

Dégradation de matériaux composites dans un environment marin: Nouveaux materiaux et methodes d'essais ArchiMer
Pomies, F; Carlsson, L; Choqueuse, Dominique; Davies, Peter.
The change in composite material properties when these are exposed to a marine environment is of considerable importance to both designers and users of these materials. In this paper new materials are first studied, composites composed of a glass fibre reinforced thermoplastic PPS matrix. It is shown that their poor interfacial resistance to moisture ingress compromises severely the advantage of using a matrix which does not absorb moisture. In the second part of the paper the application of two non-destructive test techniques for following damage development, based on ultrasonic wave propagation and vibration (modal) analysis, are described. These are complemented by first results from a study using fracture mechanics tests to characterise delamination...

Endommagement mecanique de materiaux composites. Role sur les proprietes hygrothermiques ArchiMer
Perreux, D; Suri, C; Varchon, D; Oytana, C.
The mechanical behaviour of polymer based glass fibre composites depends on the damage level and the amount of moisture present. Two anelastic damage models, both adapted to the mechanical properties of epoxy and polyester matrix polymers, are proposed. A coupling effect between the kinetics of damage and moisture level is shown.

Characterization of residual stresses in wound composite tubes ArchiMer
Casari, Pascal; Jacquemin, Frederic; Davies, Peter.
This paper presents a method for the characterization of residual stresses in thick filament wound tubes. The three materials considered in the study are wet wound epoxy composite tubes based on E glass, R glass and T700 carbon fibres with three winding angles, [+/- 35], [+/- 55] and [+/- 851 with respect to the longitudinal axis. The aim of the present work is to measure internal stresses, based on strains liberated by cutting composite tubes, and to compare results with predictions from a residual stress model based on the classical equations of solid mechanics. This leads to a simple technique which allows the quick identification of the effects of manufacturing and moisture on the internal multi-axial stress level.

Brooding in a temperate zone land snail: seasonal and regional patterns Naturalis
Sulikowska-Drozd, A.; Maltz, T.K.; Kappes, H..
The goal of this study is to assess if the reproductive strategy of a brooding land snail shifts along a climatic gradient. We focused on the following traits: timing and length of the reproductive season, brood size, ontogenetic dynamics of embryos, and reproductive mode (viviparity versus egg-laying). We dissected the central European door snail Alinda biplicata, collected monthly from eight populations covering the oceaniccontinental climatic gradient within the species’ distribution range. Forty percent of the 1706 dissected individuals were brooding. The species displayed a spring-summer reproductive activity pattern: intrauterine brooding was recorded between March and September; first embryos of a developmental stage that equals that of live-born...

Water sorption isotherms of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. Conidia Neotropical Entomology
Silva,Roberta Z. da; Neves,Pedro M.J.O.; Yamashita,Fábio; Santoro,Patrícia H..
One of the requirements for successful commercial production of biological control agent is the maintenance of viability for long periods at room temperature, increasing shelf life. The water activity (Aw) is an important parameter to study the stability in the storage of dehydrated products but its determination demands equipments not always available. The water sorption isotherms correlate the Aw with the moisture of a product; adsorption isotherm is important to define the packaging system, and desorption isotherm the drying process. The objective of this study was to determine the sorption isotherms of Beauveria bassiana conidia and adjust them using a mathematical model. The adsorption and desorption were determined by gravimetric technique at 25°C...

MARKETING OF WHEAT ON A CONSTANT AND NIL MOISTURE BASIS AgEcon
Wilson, William W.; Dahl, Bruce L..
This study examined moisture specification practices in the United States and for major exporters and assessed impacts of changes to a nil or constant moisture basis on prices and revenue. These were examined under scenarios where information on moisture in current prices is limited and under a scenario where current prices reflect Full Knowledge of moisture advantages. Results indicate that changing to a nil moisture basis (which requires a subsequent adjustment in volumes to reflect the subtraction of moisture) would increase reported prices from 42 to 70 c/bu for the wheat classes, while changing to a 12 percent constant moisture basis would have limited impacts on reported prices. Effects on relative prices/revenue depend on whether knowledge of...

Determination of Moisture Levels, Protein and Water Absorption of Chicken Giblets Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Scaratti,D; Geremias,R; Franchin,PR; Scaratti,G.
Abstract This study aimed at evaluating the levels of moisture, protein, water to protein ratio, and water absorption during chilling of chicken giblets (heart, liver, and gizzard) to set legal limits of water absorption during this process. The survey was conducted in the southern Brazil, the largest broiler-producing region of this country. Giblets (heart, liver, and gizzard) were collected fresh from the processing line after evisceration and at the exit of the chiller after the immersion process from two processing plants. One of the plants (PP1) processes small chickens (1,100g live weight) and PP2 processes chickens with 2,800g live weight. In total, 448 samples were collected. Laboratory tests were performed in duplicate for each parameter measured....

Soil seed bank variation patterns according to environmental factors in a natural grassland Rev. bras. sementes
Maia,Fernanda Costa; Medeiros,Renato Borges de; Pillar,Valério de Patta; Focht,Telmo.
This research aimed to determine the soil seed bank and its relationship with environmental factors that have an influence in the distribution of the vegetation above the ground in an excluded area of natural grassland in the South of Brazil. Most of the 122 identified species in the seed bank were perennials. Data analysis indicated three distinct community groups, according to the size and composition of the soil seed bank in lowlands with permanent wet soils, in lowlands and in other areas. In general, lowlands were characterized by low-fertility soils, high moisture and aluminum contents, being spatially homogeneous habitats and, therefore, more restricted to vegetation heterogeneity than other parts of the relief. Environmental factors most associated...

Indirect determination of moisture using biospeckle technique Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Kurokawa e Silva,Gabriela; Aguiar,Rosa Helena; Oliveira,Rafael Augustus de; Fabbro,Inacio Maria Dal.
Abstract The classification and selection of agricultural products are very important to assure post-harvest quality processes. However, most of physical and chemical analyses are destructive. It means those products turn useless after these analyses. Moisture is one of the most important parameters to assure the storage quality and as well to facilitate product processing. This research offers an alternative method to determine that parameter through an indirect and non-destructive way, using the image analysis based on the Biospeckle phenomenon. This method consists in get a 10 seconds video of a laser focused on the object. This video is divided in frames, using a computational routine in Matlab and, then, the sequence of images is processed using the...

Assessment of physical and physicochemical quality of main chocolates traded in Peru Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Chire-Fajardo,Gabriela Cristina; Valdivia-Arrunategui,Rocío Alicia; Orihuela-Rivera,Carmen Adela; Ureña- Peralta,Milber Oswaldo.
Abstract: The quality of the main chocolates marketed in Peru was determined. The physical aspect: color (C *, H *, IB), hardness and particle size, as well as physicochemical: water activity (aw), moisture, fat and ash, correlating with the declaration of ingredients presented in the packaging. We evaluated 30 experimental units of chocolates (imported, domestic, dark chocolate and milk) by experimental methods, randomly acquired from different establishments. The difference between color and hardness by origin was attributed to the dairy component. Dark chocolate had lower values of color components (8.75 ± 0.94 C *, 7.60 ± 4.71 H * and 28.46 ± 0.86 IB) than milk constituents (15.04 ± 2.78 C, 34.59 ± 7.46 H * and 34.55 ± 2.87 IB) and in hardness values...

Gray scale of radiographic images in the assessment of degree moisture in soybean seeds Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Trujillo,Heiber Andrés; Guilhien Gomes-Junior,Francisco; Rondinel-Mendoza,Natalie Verónika; Trujillo,Carlos Humberto.
Abstract The moisture degree is one of the most important factors in choosing procedures for obtaining high quality seeds. In most quality control programs, the degree of moisture is determined by laboratory tests, based on the maximum removal of water when the seed is subjected to the application of heat under controlled conditions. The radiographic image is characterized by the generation of images with different levels of gray after the interaction of X-rays with the seed tissues. The objective of this research was to determine the gray scale values of radiographic images of soybean (Glycine max (L.)) seeds with different levels of hydration, aiming to establish relationships with the conventional method of moisture determination. Radiographic images of...
