Molt cycle of the natural population of Palaemonetes argentinus (Crustacea, Palaemonidae) from Los Padres Lagoon (Buenos Aires, Argentina) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Felix,Mónica M. L.; Petriella,Ana M..
The molt cycle of the natural population of Palaemonetes argentinus Nobili, 1901 from Los Padres Lagoon, Buenos Aires, Argentina, was studied in relation to age, sex, and environmental factors. A total of 1645 individuals (740 females, 539 males, and 366 juveniles) were collected and analyzed between December 1995 and December 1996. The results indicate that the sex ratio (males:females) remains around 1:1.4 throughout most of the year. The reproductive period extends from September until February (spring and summer), with maximum sexual activity in October and November. Two cohorts originated in the spring and in the summer were differentiated. Ovigerous females arrest their molt cycle during the intermolt period to restart it after oviposition. The...

Physiological and Biochemical Variations during the Molt Cycle in Juvenile Litopenaeus vannamei under Laboratory Conditions ArchiMer
Galindo, Carmen; Gaxiola, Gabriela; Cuzon, Gerard; Chiappa-carrara, Xavier.
Biochemical changes, specifically in hemocyanin and glucose concentrations in hemolymph, glycogen in the digestive gland. were studied throughout the molt cycle in juveniles of Litopenaeus vannamei in a high salinity condition (36), and related to variations in the osmotic capacity of organisms. Increasing hemolymph volume before molting modifies circulating glucose and hemocyanin concentrations acting on the osmotic capacity. Variations in glucose concentrations are indicators of differential energy requirements throughout the molt cycle. Hemocyanin was used as an indirect indicator of the energy consumed by shrimp in various molt processes that affect the osmotic capacity. The co-variability of these metabolites is the result of the biochemical...

Physiological maturity and relationships of growth and reproduction in the red mangrove crab Goniopsis cruentata (Latreille) (Brachyura, Grapsidae) on the coast of São Paulo, Brazil Zoologia
Cobo,Valter José; Fransozo,Adilson.
This investigation provided information on the physiological sexual maturity and relationships of growth and reproduction in Goniopsis cruentata (Latreille, 1803). Collections were made monthly from January 1995 through December 1996, on the northeastern coast of São Paulo State, Brazil. The crabs were grouped into juvenile males; adult males; juvenile females, and adult females, including ovigerous ones. For each specimen the carapace width (CW) was measured, and molt condition and macroscopic developmental stage of the gonad tissue were recorded. CWs of physiologically mature crabs were between 21.4 and 23.7 mm for both sexes. This population showed molt activity in all size groups throughout the study period, which suggests continuous growth and the...
