A method for regeneration of the commercially important common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris ) using N6-benzylaminopurine(BAP) and adenine sulphate (AS) was established. Embryogenic axes of the Costa Rican common bean cultivars Bribrí, Brunca, Guaymí, Huetar and Telire were cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 100 mgl-1 myo-inositol, 1 mgl-1 thiamine, 30 gl-1 sucrose, BAP (0, 5 and 10 mgl-1), AS (0, 20 and 40 mgl-1) and 8 gl-1 agar. Regardless of the concentration of BAP and AS in the induction medium, the number of shoots and leaves differed significantly among the common bean cultivars evaluated. The higher average of shoots was obtained for Brunca > Telire > Bribrí > Guaymí > Huetar. Moreover, independently of the cultivar,... |

The aim of this review is to critically analyze the role of silver nitrate (AgNO3) in modulating plant growth and development. In recent years, basic studies on ethylene regulation opened new vistas for applied research in the area of micro-propagation, somatic embryogenesis, in vitro flowering, growth promotion, fruit ripening, and sex expression. Silver nitrate has proved to be a very potent inhibitor of ethylene action and is widely used in plant tissue culture. Few properties of silver nitrate such as easy availability, solubility in water, specificity and stability make it very useful for various applications in exploiting plant growth regulation and morphogenesis in vivo and in vitro. Silver ion mediated responses seem to be involved in polyamines,... |

ABSTRACT Physiological reorganization is described for the first time for the hypotrich ciliate genus Apoamphisiella Foissner, 1997, based on a population of A. vernalis (Stokes, 1887) Berger, 2006 collected from an eutrophic pond in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Stomatogenesis is epiapokinetal, and the cirral pattern reorganizes from six typical fronto-ventral-transverse primordia, plus at least one short primordium located between IV and V. Primordia I and II originate from disaggregating undulating membranes and buccal cirrus, respectively; primordium III originates from left frontoventral cirrus plus a streak of basal bodies extending from the anterior end of oral primordium; primordium IV and the short extra primordia are formed from basal bodies... |

The effect of the feeding period on larval development was investigated in European sea bass larvae by considering the expression level of some genes involved in morphogenesis. Larvae were fed a control diet except during three different periods (period A: from 8 to 13 d post-hatching (dph); period B: from 13 to 18 dph; period C: from 18 to 23 dph) with two compound diets containing high levels of vitamin A or PUFA. European sea bass morphogenesis was affected by these two dietary nutrients during the early stages of development. The genes involved in morphogenesis could be modulated between 8 and 13 dph, and our results indicated that retinoids and fatty acids influenced two different molecular pathways that in turn implicated two different gene cascades,... |

The crustacean integument is an excellent model for the study of cuticular morphogenesis, at different organization levels. At the supermolecular level, subunits of chitin and protein assemble and show the organization of a stabilized liquid crystal. At higher levels corresponding to cells and cells populations, several controls are involved in the fine architecture of the epicuticle, in the mineral distribution and in characters which concern the whole animal, such as isometric or allometric growth. |

Heat shocks at 40 degree were delivered to Artemia at the end of embryonic development and at the beginning of postembryonic development and their effects on subsequent development examined. Heat shocks delivered during preemergence development have no effect on subsequent development. Heat shocks delivered to newly hatched nauplii induce anomalies on the morphogenesis of thoracic and genital appendages. The induction of morphological anomalies by thermal conditions prevailing during early larval life makes it easier to integrate the morphological effects previously induced by nutritional conditions imposed to older feeding stages. |

The epicuticle of the crab Carcinus maenas consists in three distinct layers: the fibrous surface coat, the cuticulin layer and the inner epicuticle. Short segments of the cuticulin layer are first deposited at the top of dense plaques of the ectodermal cell membrane. Their assembling gives rise to a five-layered continuous structure of about 37 nm thick. Afterwards, the inner epicuticle is added inside close to the cuticulin layer but dense plaques are not concerned with the phenomenon. The deposition of the fibrous surface coat outside to the cuticulin layer takes place only during late postmolt stages (D2-D3). In mineralized cuticles, this typical epicuticle structure persists during all intermolt long. |

It is known in vertebrates that endothelin-1 (ET-1) plays a key role ill morphogenesis whose expression level greatly influences the development of craniofacial malformations. In the Present study, the complete cDNA fragment encoding a precursor of endothelin-1, the preproendothelin-1 (PPET1), was cloned by RACE-PCR from European sea bass. The cDNA encoded a 199 amino acid polypeptide that was composed of the "mature" and "big" ET-1. Relative ET-1 expression levels were investigated in European sea bass larvae fed microparticulate diets containing the standard amount (0.08 g retinol/kg diet: group N) or all excess of retinoic acid which induces skeletal malformations (0.5 g retinol/kg diet: group RA). Real-time reverse transcriptor polymerase chain... |

A new analysis within the framework of developmental genetics provides both raw data and theoretical support to the “old” morphology and suggests a new, more predictive, approach to the concept of homology. We distinguish between “positional homologues” and “structural homologues” as independent components of the more general concept of homology. We discuss some general patterns seen in the anatomy of animals and in their morphogenesis. Slack et al. (1993) advanced the concepts of the “zootype”, a particular spatial pattern of gene expression, and the “phylotype”, a particular stage of embryonic development that expresses the zootype. We build upon these concepts and expand them. This allows us to propose some additional phylotypes (arthrotype, cyclotype,... |

ABSTRACT: This research aimed to study weed interference relationship on morphogenesis, yield, and greenhouse gas production potential of Urochloa ruziziensis under pasture renovation conditions. The experimental design was a randomized block design with four replications. Treatments consisted of seven coexistence periods: 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 days after emergence (DAE). The following morphological parameters were analyzed: number of tillers, number of leaves, photosynthetically active leaf blade biomass, fresh stem biomass, dead material biomass, and total dry biomass. In vitro analyses of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) production were also carried out. The results were submitted to analysis of variance by the F-test, and the test of... |
