Pulmonary emphysema induced by passive smoking: an experimental study in rats BJMBR
Cendon,S.P.; Battlehner,C.; Lorenzi-Filho,G.; Dohlnikoff,M.; Pereira,P.M.; Conceição,G.M.S.; Beppu,O.S.; Saldiva,P.H.N..
We describe a short time model for inducing experimental emphysema in rats by chronic tobacco smoke inhalation. Three groups of male Wistar rats (6 months old) were studied: controls (N = 8), rats intoxicated for 45 days (s-45, N = 7) or for 90 days (s-90, N = 8). The exposed animals were intoxicated 3 times a day (10 cigarettes per exposure period), 5 days a week. Pulmonary damage was assessed by means of functional tests and quantitative pathological examination of the airways and lung parenchyma. The s-45 and s-90 animals were similar in terms of functional residual capacity (FRC) corrected for body weight (FRC/kg) but both groups of smoking rats exhibited significantly higher FRC/kg values than the controls (s-45 = 6.33; s-90 = 6.46; controls = 3.78;...

Morphological characterization with image analysis of cocoa beverage powder agglomerated with steam Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Vissotto,Fernanda Zaratini; Giarola,Raquel Carolina; Jorge,Lívia Calegari; Makita,Gisele Tokie; Cardozo,Gina Maria Bueno Quirino; Rodrigues,Maria Isabel; Menegalli,Florencia Cecilia.
In this study, the morphological characteristics of cocoa beverage powder granules under minimal, average, and maximal process conditions of a steam agglomerator were studied. a stereoscopic microscope coupled to a digital camera was used for the morphological analysis. The images were analyzed to obtain shape and size descriptors. aiming to evaluate the descriptors, 150 particles were analyzed. The results showed that there was no difference between the shape descriptors - compacity, circularity, roughness, and aspect ratio - in the operating conditions evaluated. It was observed that the cocoa beverage powder granules are elongated in shape. The size descriptors, area, perimeter, perimeter of convex bounding polygon, minimal and maximal Feret diameter,...

Processing of Brazil-nut flour: characterization, thermal and morphological analysis Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Santos,Orquídea Vasconcelos dos; Lopes,Alessandra Santos; Azevedo,Glaucinéia Oliveira; Santos,Ângela Chagas.
The Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsea H. B. K.) is noteworthy for its high content of lipids and proteins of elevated biological value and these factors justify the need for further research and incentives for the manufacturing of new trade products. In the present study we sought new forms of technological use of these nuts by the food industry, through their processing as flour, with no alteration in its energy content. The results after its elaboration showed a product with high energy value (431.48 kcal.100 g-1), protein content of 45.92 g.100 g-1, and fiber of 17.14%. The thermal analyses indicate that the introduction of another protein component, such as soy protein isolate, does not alter the reactions or thermal behavior. On the other hand,...

Automatic dynamic mask extraction for PIV images containing an unsteady interface, bubbles, and a moving structure ArchiMer
Dussol, David; Druault, Philippe; Mallat, Bachar; Delacroix, Sylvain; Germain, Gregory.
When performing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements in complex fluid flows with moving interfaces and a two-phase flow, it is necessary to develop a mask to remove non-physical measurements. This is the case when studying, for example, the complex bubble sweep-down phenomenon observed in oceanographic research vessels. Indeed, in such a configuration, the presence of an unsteady free surface, of a solid–liquid interface and of bubbles in the PIV frame, leads to generate numerous laser reflections and therefore spurious velocity vectors. In this note, an image masking process is developed to successively identify the boundaries of the ship and the free surface interface. As the presence of the solid hull surface induces laser reflections, the hull...

Genetic diversity of guava (Psidium guajava L.) from Central Mexico revealed by morphological and RAPD markers Phyton
Valera-Montero,LL; Muñoz-Rodríguez,PJ; Silos-Espino,H; Flores-Benítez,S.
Guava fruit produced in Calvillo, Aguascalientes (Mexico) is considered to be of the best quality in this country. Nevertheless, growers from this place empirically know that there is a noticeable variation among individual trees within the same orchard, and variation among individuals from different orchards. In order to have a clear evidence of this, morphology analysis of guava was performed taking data from seventy nine individuals out of thirty six orchards, while RAPD was performed on a subset of twenty six individuals. Similarity was found for morphology data ranging from 87-100%, while similarity from RAPD data ranged from 30-100%. Combined data of RAPD and morphology showed similarity greater than 80%. Clades from combined data sorted genotypes...
