The taxonomic significance of seed morphology in the Passiflora subgenus Astrophea (Passifloraceae) Acta Botanica
Mezzonato-Pires,Ana Carolina; Mendonça,Cláudia Barbieri Ferreira; Milward-De-Azevedo,Michaele Alvim; Gonçalves-Esteves,Vania.
ABSTRACT The center of diversity for Passiflora subg. Astrophea is in low altitude areas of northern South America. The majority of species of this group are difficult to find in nature. Seed morphology was described in detail for 25 species of Passiflora subgenus Astrophea, a subgenus that until now did not exist. For morphological analysis, 20 seeds per species were measured for length, width and thickness, and the arithmetic means calculated. The seeds varied in length, width and thickness. Eight types of ornamentation were found. The margins varied among crestate, dentate, parted, entire and parted-crestate. The seed apex can be distinguished by the shape and position of the apical appendage. Seed shape varied among obovate, lanceolate, cordiform, and...

Gross anatomy and histology of the alimentary system of Characidae (Teleostei: Ostariophysi: Characiformes) and potential phylogenetic information Neotropical Ichthyology
Alonso,Felipe; Mirande,Juan Marcos; Pandolfi,Matías.
A compared study of the morphology of the alimentary tract and liver of seven selected species corresponding to the main clades of the Characidae family is presented herein. Three new set of characters corresponding to 1) alimentary tract gross anatomy, 2) alimentary tract histology and 3) liver gross anatomy are evaluated as potential sources of data for future phylogenetic studies of the Characidae. Not considerable interspecific variation was observed at the histological level and therefore this source is not considered to be phylogenetically informative at the taxonomic level analyzed. In contrast, liver and alimentary tract gross anatomy presented important interspecific variation while a relatively homogenous intraspecific morphology was observed....

Identification and characterization of pathogenic Pestalotiopsis species to pecan tree in Brazil PAB
Lazarotto,Marília; Bovolini,Marciéli Pitorini; Muniz,Marlove Fátima Brião; Harakawa,Ricardo; Reiniger,Lia Rejane Silveira; Santos,Álvaro Figueredo dos.
The objective of this work was to characterize and cluster isolates of Pestalotiopsis species and to identify those that are pathogenic to pecan, based on morphological and molecular characters. Pestalotiopsis spp. isolates were identified by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and β?tubulin regions. Identification methods were compared to indicate the key morphological characters for species characterization. Thirteen isolates were used for the pathogenicity tests. Morphological characterization was performed using the following variables: mycelial growth rate, sporulation, colony pigmentation, and conidial length and width. Ten pathogenic isolates were identified, three as -tubulin regions. Identification methods were compared to indicate...

Description of a new species of Psathyromyia Barreto (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) from Amazonas state, Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Alves,Veracilda Ribeiro; Freitas,Rui Alves de.
ABSTRACTA new species of phlebotomine sand fly is described and illustrated based on the male and female morphological characters of specimens collected from Tefé and Coari municipalities, Amazonas state. The phlebotomine sand flies were collected with CDC light traps used as aspirators at the base of tree trunks. Both male and female specimens collected in Tefé municipality were first identified as Psathyromyia souzacastroi. After the analysis of the holotype of Pa. souzacastroi deposited in Smithsonian Institute/Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit, it was observed that the morphotypes collected in Tefé municipality belong to a distinct species, which characterization is here presented.

A new species of Cyrtoneuropsis (Diptera: Muscidae) with considerations on the phylogeny of the genus Rev. Bras. Zool.
Haseyama,Kirstern L.F.; Carvalho,Claudio J.B. de.
We describe a new species of Cyrtoneuropsis Malloch, 1925 (Diptera, Muscidae) from Brazil. The new species is included in a previously published key to species. Additionally, we review a previously published matrix to Cyrtoneurina Giglio-Tos, 1893 and Cyrtoneuropsis. A total of 52 character states were modified and the new species was added to it. The modified matrix was analyzed under equal and implied weights. In all topologies, Cyrtoneuropsis spiloptera (Wiedemann, 1830) came up as the sister group of the new species. The monophyly of Cyrtoneurina and Cyrtoneuropsis were recovered, but the relationships among their species, in our data, differ from those obtained in the past.

An interesting new species of Sphaerocysta (Heteroptera, Tingidae) from Argentina, with the description of its ffth instar nymph Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Guidoti,Marcus; Montemayor,Sara I..
A new Neotropical species of Sphaerocysta Stål, (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Tingidae) is described. Sphaerocysta costai n. sp. was collected in the Argentinian Yungas, in the provinces of Jujuy (Calilegua) and Salta (Urundel). The most important diagnostic characters are illustrated for adults and fifthinstar nymphs. This new species provides relevant evidence for the understanding of evolutionary trends within the family as its nymphal morphology exhibits unique features among Tingidae. Comments on the systematics of Sphaerocysta, and an identification key to its species are provided.

Old tools as new support for on farm conservation of different types of maize Scientia Agricola
Vidal,Rafael; Silva,Natália Carolina de Almeida; Ogliari,Juliana Bernardi.
ABSTRACT: A germplasm collection should represent the diversity of the target species and the gene pools associated with it. However, it is critical to establish collection plans which ensure such representativeness. At times it is difficult to identify the best strategy for collecting domesticated species that are conserved in situ/on farm, since, in general, the magnitude of the diversity existing in a geographical area was hitherto unknown. The Diversity Census methodology was developed for previous diagnosis of the diversity of Zea mays subsp. mays L., conserved by farmers in two municipalities in the far western region of the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. The Diversity Census database allowed for the identification of the best strategy to...

Ninety-three samples of high land rice, “Bue Po Lo” variety from Mae Hong Son province and one sample of “Eto” variety from Chiang Rai province were evaluated for genetic diversity at Maejo University during June to December of 2012. Treatments were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block design with 2 replications. Cluster analysis of quality characters using NTSYS software was performed to construct dendrogram. The results found that sheath color, internode color, awn character, stem pattern, flag leaf pattern, panicle base pattern, stem vigor, secondary branch pattern, panicle pattern, panicle exertion and threshing were significantly different. While, leaf pubescence, ligule pattern and stigma color were not significantly different. Cluster analyses of...

Phylogeny of the Aplousobranchia (Tunicata: Ascidiacea) Zoologia
Moreno,Tatiane R.; Rocha,Rosana M..
The phylogenetic relationships of genera and families of Aplousobranchia Lahille (Tunicata, Ascidiacea) is reconstructed based on morphological characters - the first comprehensive morphology-based phylogenetic analysis for the Aplousobranchia. Monophyly of Aplousobranchia and its families were tested with samples of 14 families. The final character matrix comprised 47 characters and 41 genera as terminal taxa. Nine equally most parsimonious trees (length 161, CI = 0.5031, RI = 0.7922) were found. Characters describing replication, colony system formation, and branchial walls were the more important in phylogenetic reconstruction. These characters were more useful than others more traditionally used in ascidian taxonomy, such as: body division, position of...
