This dissertation analyzes the evolution and the way of exposition in museums of natural history in the 19e century till the beginning of the 20e century. The analysis is based on the development of the « Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle » of Paris, the British Museum of London, and the national museum of natural history of Leiden. The first chapter describes the creation of natural history collections in Holland within the tradition of collecting from the 16e century till the creation of the National Museum of Natural History in 1820. The second chapter traces the creation of the three above mentioned museums. Here, the internal and external factors which played a role in their realization are investigated.
