Ammonia poisoning causes muscular but not liver damage in cattle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Antonelli,A.C.; Torres,G.A.S.; Soares,P.C.; Mori,C.S.; Sucupira,M.C.A.; Ortolani,E.L..
Twelve steers were intraruminally administered a high dose (0.5g/kg BW) of urea to study the damage effect of ammonia poisoning on liver and/or muscles. Blood samples were collected to determine ammonia and activities of gammaGT, AST and CK. Eleven steers were successfully poisoned and treated properly, but one succumbed. Poisoned cattle showed high concentration of ammonia, and higher activities of AST and CK. The higher the ammonia, the greater were the activities of AST (r=0.59) and CK (r=0.61). The correlation between AST and CK was high and significant (r=0.80), but not between AST and gammaGT (r=0.19). The activities of AST and CK were higher after the beginning of the convulsive episodes due to ammonia poisoning. Those results showed that occurred...

Estrogen supplementation failed to attenuate biochemical indices of neutrophil infiltration or damage in rat skeletal muscles following ischemia Biol. Res.
TIIDUS,PETER M; DELLER,MIRADA; BOMBARDIER,ERIC; GÜL,MUSTAFA; LIU,X. LINDA.
This study examined the effects of estrogen supplementation on markers of neutrophil infiltration and damage in skeletal muscle of rats following ischemia. Male and female gonad-intact rats, with or without 14 days of estrogen supplementation were subjected to two hours of hind-limb ischemia and sacrificed at 24, 48 or 72 hours post-ischemia. Control animals were sacrificed without ischemia. Plantaris and red and white gastrocneimus muscles were removed and assayed for myeloperoxidase (MPO), a marker of neutrophil infiltration, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and ß-glucuronidase (<img border=0 width=8 height=15 id="_x0000_i1026" src="http://fbpe/img/bres/v38n2-3/existe.gif" align=absbottom>GLU), as markers of muscle damage. Significant...

Effect of eccentric training on mitochondrial function and oxidative stress in the skeletal muscle of rats BJMBR
Silva,L.A.; Bom,K.F.; Tromm,C.B.; Rosa,G.L.; Mariano,I.; Pozzi,B.G.; Tuon,T.; Stresck,E.L.; Souza,C.T.; Pinho,R.A..
The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of eccentric training on the activity of mitochondrial respiratory chain enzymes, oxidative stress, muscle damage, and inflammation of skeletal muscle. Eighteen male mice (CF1) weighing 30-35 g were randomly divided into 3 groups (N = 6): untrained, trained eccentric running (16°; TER), and trained running (0°) (TR), and were submitted to an 8-week training program. TER increased muscle oxidative capacity (succinate dehydrogenase and complexes I and II) in a manner similar to TR, and TER did not decrease oxidative damage (xylenol and creatine phosphate) but increased antioxidant enzyme activity (superoxide dismutase and catalase) similar to TR. Muscle damage (creatine kinase) and...
