Micromorphology in Mycale taxonomy (Mycalidae, Poecilosclerida, Demospongiae), with the description of two new micracanthoxea-bearing species Naturalis
Carballo, José Luis; Hajdu, Eduardo.
Two new species of Mycale with micracanthoxeas are described: Mycale (Aegogropila) lilianae n. sp., mainly characterized by the presence of toxas as large as 300 µm, and Mycale (Carmia) urizae n. sp., the first Mycale with micracanthoxeas described from Africa, characterized by the presence of anisochelae-III with the falx projecting downwards from the middle basal portion of the frontal alae of the head, and by the presence of two morphologically distinct size classes of toxas, with toxas-II being notably oxea-shaped. A discussion of all species of Mycale with micracanthoxeas is included. It is postulated that a comprehensive assessment of the distribution of this character, as well as of other micromorphological features of Mycale spicules, may shed...

The Northeastern Atlantic species Mycale micracanthoxea Buizer & Van Soest, 1977 (Porifera, Poecilosclerida) in the Strait of Gibraltar (Southern Spain) Naturalis
Carballo, J.L.; García-Gómez, J.C..
The northeastern Atlantic species Mycale micracanthoxea Buizer & Van Soest, 1977 is a component of subtidal shallow water and brackishwater harbour poles and pontoons from The Netherlands, where it grows attached to shells, barnacles, etc. It was found in similar zones and habitats of Algeciras Bay (Gibraltar Strait, southern Spain) and Isla Cristina (Huelva, southern Spain) where it is very common. This new record constitutes the southernmost limit of the geographical range of this species. This article presents some data on the anatomical variability of Mycale micracanthoxea, along with a discussion on the possible causes of its observed distribution.

Mycale species (Porifera: Poecilosclerida) of Northwest Africa and the Macaronesian Islands Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van; Beglinger, E.J.; Voogd, N.J. de.
Based on collections assembled by Dutch expeditions to the Northwest African region, including the offshore islands in the neighbouring Atlantic, a taxonomic monograph of sponges of the genus Mycale is presented. Additional material from the region borrowed from the Zoologisk Museum of the University of Copenhagen and incidental samples made by individual collectors were also included. The combined collections contained sixteen species, nine of which are new to science: Mycale (Aegogropila) syringosimilis spec. nov., Mycale (Aegogropila) tenerifensis spec. nov., Mycale (Arenochalina) africamucosa spec. nov., Mycale (Carmia) atropha spec. nov., Mycale (Carmia) guineensis spec. nov., Mycale (Naviculina) cruzi spec. nov., Mycale (Paresperella) janvermeuleni...

Mycale (Aegogropila) kolletae sp. n. from the SE Atlantic, with comments on the species of Mycale Gray with raphidotoxas (Mycalidae, Demospongiae, Porifera) Zoologia
Carballo,José Luis; Hajdu,Eduardo.
A new species of Mycale Gray, 1867 bearing raphidotoxas is described from the Namibian coast (SE Atlantic). Mycale (Aegogropila) kolletae sp. n. is characterized by having raphidotoxas up to 590 µm long, three distinct categories of anisochelae, two categories of sigmas, very small raphides, and most of all, by toxas serrated in an unusual pattern (on the inner parts of all three bends). Mycale magnirhaphidifera Van Soest, 1984 is redescribed from the Brazilian coast, based on a population from the northern São Paulo State coastline. The remaining two species with raphidotoxas, viz. Mycale rhaphidotoxa Hentschel, 1912 and M. mannarensis Thomas, 1968 are revised. Levi's (1963) record of Carmia macilenta (Bowerbank, 1866) for the South African coast was...

Two new Mycale (Naviculina) Gray (Mycalidae, Poecilosclerida, Demospongiae) from the Paulista Biogeographic Province (Southwestern Atlantic) Zoologia
Lerner,Cléa; Hajdu,Eduardo.
Two new Mycale (Naviculiiia) Gray, 1867 are described, M. (N.) arcuiris sp. n. and M. (N.)purpurata sp. n., from the Paulista Biogeographic Province (Southwestern Atlantic). They both occur in the São Sebastião Channel area (São Paulo stale coast), the former extending its known distribution to "Arvoredo Marine Biological Reserve" (Santa Catarina state coast). The new species are sibling and differ from each other by a series of very small traits, the most notorious being live-color: yellow, orange, green, white, grey and beige, always light, in M. (N.) arcuiris sp. n. and bordeaux in M. (N.) purpúrala sp. n. Both species are compared with other known M. (Naviculiiia). Mycale (Aegogropila) henlscheli Sim & Lee, 2001 is transferred to subgenus...
