Quantitative Study of the Myenteric Plexus of the Descending Colon of Young Rats Subjected to Intense Protein Deficiency International Journal of Morphology
Araújo,Eduardo José de Almeida; Sant'Ana,Débora de Mello Gonçales; Molinari,Sonia Lucy; Miranda Neto,Marcílio Hübner de.
We studied the effects of a severely hypoproteic diet on the quantitative aspects of the myenteric plexus of the descending colon of young rats. Eighteen rats were divided into two groups, one of them being fed with a chow having 26% protein (control) and the other with a chow having 4% protein, balanced for minerals and vitamins, during 12 weeks. The whole-mounts of the descending colon had their myenteric neurons stained either with Giemsa or NADPH diaphorase. The rats from the experimental group had deficits of body weight (54.23%) and area of the descending colon (48.14%); additionally, we observed that there was no alteration in the total number of neurons of the colon, but a decrease in the number of NADPH-diaphorase positive neurons (37.80%). The...

Atrophy of the Nitrergic Myenteric Neurons in the Descending Colon Rats Submitted to Protein and Vitamin Deficiency International Journal of Morphology
Araújo,Eduardo José de Almeida; Hermes,Catchia; Miranda Neto,Marcílio Hubner de; Almeida,Elton Carlos de; Sant'Ana,Débora de Mello Gonçales.
Effects of protein and B-complex vitamin deficiency were assessed with respect to the morphometry of myenteric neurons in the descending colon of adult rats. Sixteen animals were divided into two groups: Control Group (CG, n=8) and Experimental Group (EG, n=8). The CG received 22% protein chow and the EG received 4% protein chow for 120 days. The descending colon was submitted to NADH- and NADPH-diaphorase technique in order to evidence nervous cells in the whole mounts preparations. In the EG, NADH-d positive neurons presented reduced nuclei, while NADPH-d positive neurons showed atrophy of the soma area (~41.7%) inducing an increase of the proportion occupied by the nucleus inside in the soma of these cells.

Hypertrophy of NADH-diaphorase positive myenteric neurons in rat jejunum after acute infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Pereira,LS; Silva,AV; Araújo,EJA; Sant'Ana,DMG.
Toxoplasmosis, a globally distributed feline-associated zoonosis caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, affects birds and mammals, including humans. This study assesses the consequences of acute T. gondii infection for NADH-diaphorase positive myenteric neurons in rat jejunum. Ten male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into two groups: G1 (n = 5) and G2 (n = 5). Animals from G2 were orally inoculated with 500 genotype III (M7741) T. gondii oocysts. Twenty-four hours after inoculation, the animals were euthanized and had their jejuna removed, through laparotomy, and measured (length and width) to calculate their areas. Intestinal segments were submitted to NADH-diaphorase histochemistry to evidence the most metabolically active subpopulation...

Benefits of caloric restriction in the myenteric neuronal plasticity in aging rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
PEREIRA,JOICE N.B.; MARI,RENATA B.; STABILLE,SANDRA R.; FARIA,HAROLDO G. DE; MOTA,THAIS F.M.; FERREIRA,WALTER M..
Aging is a biologic process characterized by progressive damage of structures and functions of organic systems. In gastrointestinal tract, it can involve enteric nervous system, which plays an important role in digestion and absorption of nutrients, causing hastening of intestinal transit thus reducing its absorptive function. Caloric restriction has been used in several studies with the intention of delaying deleterious effects of aging. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of caloric restriction on myenteric neurons of ileum by aging in rats. 30 Wistar rats were grouped as follows: GI (animals aged 6 months fed with normal diet), GII (animals aged 18 months fed with normal diet) and GIII (animals aged 18 months subject to 31% of caloric restriction)....

Characterization of the myenteric neuronal population and subpopulation of the duodenum of adult wistar rat fed with hypoproteic chow Anais da ABC (AABC)
Sant'Ana,Débora M.G.; Araújo,Eduardo J.A.; Ramos,Diego H.; Hermes-Uliana,Catchia; Natali,Maria Raquel M..
The effects of severe protein malnutrition (4%) on myenteric neurons of Wistar rat duodenum, in relation to a standard 22%-protein diet for rodents, were assessed in this study. Segments of the duodenum from 10 rats from each nutritional group were submitted to the elaboration of whole mounts - 5 stained with Giemsa to determine the total population of myenteric neurons and the others stained by a histochemical method to detect nervous cells through the NADPH-diaphorase enzyme activity for studying the subpopulation of nitrergic neurons. The area of 100 neurons per animal, totalizing 2,000 neurons, were randomly measured by using the Image Pro-Plus®software. Malnourished rats presented 34.38% lower body weight and 10.60% duodenum length reduction when...

Goblet cell number in the ileum of rats denervated during suckling and weaning Biocell
Hernandes,Luzmarina; Marques da Silva Pereira,Lucieni Cristina; Parisi Alvares,Eliana.
The enteric nervous system plays a role on the stimulation of secretory cells of intestinal epithelia. We have demonstrated that ablation of ENS stimulates epithelial cell proliferation. As goblet cells are important constituents of the epithelial sheet, it is mandatory to investigate separately this cell type. The myenteric plexus of the ileum of rats in postnatal development was partially removed by the serosal application of benzalkonium chloride (BAC). Three groups of animals were used: those where BAC application was at 13 days and sacrifice was at 15 (13/28-day-old) or 23 days after treatment (13/36-day-old), and those where BAC was applied at 21 days and rats were killed 15 days after treatment (21/36-day-old) . The number of goblet cells in the...

Dietary sodium intake induced myenteric neuron hypertrophy in Wistar rats BJMBR
De Souza,R.R.; Gama,E.F.; Silva,R.D.A.; Heimann,J.C.; Maifrino,L.B.M.; Liberti,E.A..
In the present study we investigated the effect of salt intake on myenteric neuron size of the colon of adult male Wistar rats. The animals were placed on either a high-salt (HS; 8%; 12 animals) or a low-salt diet (LS; 0.15%; 12 animals) for 15 or 52 weeks and blood pressure was measured. The sizes of myenteric neurons of the distal colon from both groups were measured. No difference in neuron size was observed between the HS and LS groups after 15 weeks. After 52 weeks on HS, neuron size was increased (P<0.005) when compared with the LS group. The rats also presented hypertension, which was significantly different at 52 weeks (142 ± 11 vs 119 ± 7 mmHg). These results suggest that a long time on an HS diet can significantly increase myenteric nerve...
