The effect of broodstock diet on reproductive activity and offspring quality in the marine crustacean Mysidopsis bahia (M.) OMA
Léger, P.; Ferraz de Queiroz, J.; Sorgeloos, P..
This paper describes the first results of a study on the effects of broodstock nutrition on reproduction in marine crustaceans. For this, a short-term test system has been developed with the estuarine mysid shrimp Mysidopsis bahia (M.) as experimental animal. Three different Artemia preparations were evaluated for their possible effects on reproductive activity and offspring quality: a commercial maturation diet (Marila) incorporated in Great Salt Lake Artemia metanauplii was compared to freshly-hatched nauplii and coconut-oil enriched metanauplii as food sources for the experimental broodstock animals. Within an experimental period of 14 days after reaching sexual maturity, 3.4 respectively 8.8...

Automation in stock-culture maintenance and juvenile separation of the mysid Mysidopsis bahia (Molenonck) OMA
Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A batch system with subgravel filter for stock-culture maintenance of Mysidopsis bahia in artificial sea water is described. The feeding of mysids on Artemia is optimized through the cyclic pumping of brine shrimp instar I nauplii from a refrigerator to the stock-cultures. An easily constructed incubator-separator apparatus is described for the standardized harvesting of mysid juveniles to be used as test organisms.

International study on Artemia : 35. Techniques to manipulate the fatty acid profile in Artemia nauplii, and the effect on its nutritional effectiveness for the marine crustacean Mysidopsis bahia (M.) OMA
Léger, P.; Naessens-Foucquart, E.; Sorgeloos, P..
The importance of essential fatty acids for the early larval stages of cultured marine fish and crustacean larvae is well documented. In this regard, the variability in essential fatty acid content of their live prey Artemia is critical. This paper describes different techniques for improving the fatty acid profile in Artemia nauplii using microparticles and emulsions as enrichment diets. These diets can be applied during the incubation of the cysts and/or after the separation of the nauplii. After enrichment, the nauplii not only contain high levels of the essential fatty acid 20:5 omega 3 (up to 13.5% or 35.2 mg/g) but also considerable levels of 22:6 omega 3 (up to 7% or 18.1 mg/g), another essential fatty acid which...

Description of a standard bioassay with the marine crustacean Mysidopsis bahia (M.) for the evaluation of the nutritional effectiveness of Artemia nauplii and metanauplii OMA
Léger, P.; Johns, D.; Sorgeloos, P..
A standardized bioassay is described for the nutritional evaluation of Artemia nauplii and metanauplii using juvenile Mysidopsis bahia. This test is particularly suited to evaluate the dietary value of different strains and batches of Artemia . One day starved, fed or enriched Artemia metanauplii can also be tested. For this test, a homogenous population of freshly-released juveniles (less or equal to 24h-old) were produced in a mysid generator-separator. The test animals were transferred into an experimental apparatus, cultured under standard conditions and offered Artemia ad libitum. After 12 days, data on survival, length, individual dry...

International study on Artemia : 29. Nutritional evaluation of Artemia nauplii from different geographical origin for the marine crustacean Mysidopsis bahia OMA
Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Freshly hatched nauplii from reference Artemia and from 3 other Artemia strains were tested for their effects on survival, growth and reproductive characteristics of the crustacean Mysidopsis bahia (M.). The reference, French (Lavalduc) and Chinese (Tientsin) strains produced significantly better results for all criteria tested than the Canadian strain (Chaplin Lake). Results are discussed together with those reported for other predators.
