Abstract In Argentina, five galling species of the family Cecidosidae (Lepidoptera), including Cecidoses eremita Curtis and Eucecidoses minutanus Brèthes, have been cited. This note reports a preliminary study of their galls in "molles" (Schinus longifolius (Lindl.) Speg.) of Magdalena (Buenos Aires, Argentina). In April 2013, galls of C. eremita and E. minutanus were censused in randomly selected "molles". In April and December 2013, randomly selected galls were then collected and transported to our laboratory in hermetic bags, and conserved at -18 ºC until examination. Maximum diameter and wall thickness of collected galls were measured. About 84% of the observed "molles" (103/123) had galls of C. eremita and/or E. minutanus. The median of galls per tree... |

The aim of this work was to assess the soil erosion process in native forest by the 137Cs methodology. The mass balance model was applied to assess the rates of soil loss in three native forests around of Londrina city, Paraná, Brazil. 137Cs distribution depth was of exponential type for the three forests and 137Cs inventory was 241 Bq m-2 for Mata 1, 338 Bq m-2 for Mata 2 and 325 Bq m-2 for Mata UEL. The soil loss value calculated for three native forests was: 6,684 kg ha-1 yr-1 for Mata 1, 1,788 kg ha-1 yr-1 for Mata 2 and 4,524 kg ha-1 yr-1 for Mata UEL. |

Measuring nutrients fluxes in watersheds with different landuse is important for evaluating the effects of conversion of native forests to agricultural land, and for establishing guidelines for land management. Nitrogen (N) concentrations and fluxes were studied over a 12-month period in four watersheds in the Lake Rupanco basin in the Andean Cordillera and four watersheds located in the Lake Huillinco basin in the Coastal Cordillera of southern Chile. Two watersheds in either lake basins were covered mainly by native rainforests, and the other two had mixed landuse (livestock pastures, subsistence agriculture and shrub-pasture mixtures). In the Lake Rupanco area, the annual transport of NO3-N from forested and agricultural watersheds was 4.9 and 11.0 kg... |

The endemicity of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) in the Cianorte municipality, Paraná State the occurrence of human cases with the probable infection locus in the urban area, the presence of a permanently preserved modified native forest in the urban perimeter, and the lack of knowledge of the fauna of sand flies in the municipality provided the impetus for this study. The objective of this study was to assess the fauna, frequency and seasonality of the sand flies in the peridomicile, forest and urban area of this municipality. Sand flies were collected using Falcão light traps installed in the peridomicile and forest, from July 2005 to June 2006. A total of 755 sand flies were collected; Nyssomyia whitmani (Antunes & Coutinho) (84.0%),... |

ABSTRACT The Eriotheca gracilipes (K. Schum.) A. Robyns) is a forest specie that belongs to the Bombacaceae family and is considered an endemic specie from the Brazilian savanna. The aim of this study was to evaluate the best substrate and temperature for the vigor and germination test of E. gracilipes seeds. The experiment was carried out in a randomized design with a 4 x 7 factorial, with 28 treatments with the combination of four temperatures (20; 25; 30 and 20-30 ºC) and seven substrates (coarse vermiculite, medium vermiculite, sand, Basaplant®, paper towel, on and between filter papers), with 4 repetitions of 25 seeds each. It was assessed germination, first count of germination, and germination speed index. In conclusion, for germination and vigor... |
