Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) was evaluated as a tool to predict the chemical compositions of baled corn stalk silage. A total of 112 samples were used for determination of the pH value, crude protein (CP), crude ash (CA), dry matter (DM) and soluble carbohydrate (WSC). Samples were scanned with near infrared reflectance spectrometer and partial least-squares regression (PLSR) was used to predict the chemical compositions. The coefficients of determination of calibration (R2) and the coefficients of determination of validation (R2v) of the pH value, CP, CA and DM were higher than 0.85. The relative percent differences (RPD) of the pH value, CA and CP were higher than 2.5. The RPD of the WSC was higher than 2.0, and its R2V was 0.72.... |

The aim of this study was to investigate the use of near infrared reflectance (NIRS) spectroscopy to predict the nutritive value of silages from pastures and to assess the effect of silage structure type (e.g. bunker and bag silos) on the NIRS predictions. Samples (n = 120) were sourced from commercial farms and analyzed in a NIRS monochromator instrument (NIR Systems, Silver Spring, Maryland, USA) using wavelengths between 400 and 2500 nm in reflectance. Calibration models were developed between chemical and NIRS spectral data using partial least squares (PLS) regression. The coefficients of determination in calibration (R²) and the standard error in cross validation (SECV) were 0.73 (SECV: 1.2%), 0.81 (SECV: 2.0%), 0.75 (SECV: 6.6%), 0.80 (SECV: 6.7%),... |

Fast and precise analytical tools can contribute to optimize pasture management decisions. This work was carried out to evaluate the potential of one such technique, near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), to predict the nutritional value of pastures without previous drying of the samples, comparing two forms of collecting the spectra: reflectance, or interactance-reflectance (fiber optic probe). Samples (n = 107) from different swards were taken across the humid and temperate regions (Los Ríos and Los Lagos) of southern Chile. Once their spectra were collected, dry matter (DM) and several chemical constituents, such as crude protein (CP), metabolizable energy (ME), neutral (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF), soluble carbohydrates (SC), soluble crude protein... |
